Chapter 43: Jace’s Secret

Thirty minutes later, Lena and I were still in my bedroom, going round and round but not making any progress. By her reaction, I could tell that Jace didn’t have something nice planned for me, and I was certain that she knew what it was. Besides Maven and Uncle Leo, another person who could fuck up my plans was Jace. And if he was making moves, I had to know.

"I need to get going," Lena said as she tried to get up from the bed, but I held her hand and gently pulled her back down. "You were the one that kept insisting on how important it is that I go to the Royale Hotel and speak to Joan, why are you trying to stop me now?"

"Come on, babe." I told her, "You know why I’m doing this."

She looked away, folding her arms over her breasts as she pursed her lips. She was still naked, but at the moment, none of that mattered to me. It had taken a lot of cajoling just to get her to leave the bathroom door where she had been when she made the statement. But so far, now that she was on the bed with me, I had yet to see a major difference. She was still keeping quiet, refusing to say anything to me about Jace’s plans.

"Lena," I said quietly. "You have to talk to me, what was it that Jace went to see Thorne for? It has something to do with the marriage, right?"

"Please Kira, don’t do this to me." She said. She grabbed my hands and squeezed them hard, "I’m begging you, don’t make me reveal it to you."

"You’re begging me?" I snapped, genuinely hurt by her words. "You’re the one that is purposely keeping harmful information away from me. I’m your girlfriend, where the hell does your allegiance lie?"

"Are you fucking asking me that?" Lena got up from the bed and turned around to stare at me, "After everything I’ve done for you! After everything I’ve risked for us, you’re questioning my loyalty?"

I shifted in the bed. This was the first time I would see her in such spirits, but I wasn’t going to let that sway me. There was a more important issue at hand, and she needed to see past her emotions.

"Babe..." I said quietly, "Don’t you see what’s going on here? You’re the one withholding information from me. Information that could potentially ruin me. You know that if I don’t get Beacon Studios I won’t be able to protect you, right? Either from Jace or my uncle."

"Maybe I don’t need your protection!" She snapped, "I was perfectly fine on my own until... until you came around and I... and I..." her voice broke as her legs wobbled beneath her. She fell to her knees as she began to weep.

"You fell in love," I finished her sentence for her. "Lena, you do know that you’re not the only one right? I also fell in love with you. Everything I’m doing right now is not just for me. It’s for us. I’m fighting for our future here."

"I know..." she wept hard. "But please, don’t make me tell you. Jace is my boss, and he told me that in confidence. If I tell you what he said, it’ll be a corporate crime. I could be charged with corporate espionage. Kira, that could destroy my entire career."

"Hey!" I took her face in my hands, holding them firmly so that she looked into my eyes. I watched as tears fell freely down her cheeks. I used my thumbs to wipe them off, "nothing is going to happen to you! We’re going to be careful, I promise you that. And no matter what, I’ll protect you. Even if Jace ends up finding out about us, you’ll always be welcome at Beacon Studios."

"It’s not just about getting a job, it’s also about my reputation. What if I don’t want to work with Beacon Studios? What if things don’t go as planned with your acquisition of the company? No company will ever hire me if they know that I betrayed my last boss."

I sat on my haunches, "honestly, I don’t know what else to tell you. You know me, is there anything I’ve set out to do that I’ve not accomplished yet?"

She sniffed, wiping tears from her eyes.

"Answer me, girl." I snapped.

"No," she whispered.

"I didn’t hear you."

"I said no, goddamnit!" She cried.

"Then where is all this negative talk coming from? Don’t look at these things happening right now, they don’t determine the future. Lena, I’m going to win. One way or the other. And when I get to the top, I’m taking you there with me."

I watched her lean back as she slowly sucked in a deep breath, "you won’t stop asking me, would you?"

I shook my head, "I need to know."

With a sigh, she got up from the floor and walked past me to the wardrobe. She picked up her nightie and wore it over her naked form. I turned around, my eyes following her movements as she sat on the bed. When she spoke, her voice was flat and without any emotion.

"Jace is amending the contract."

"What?" My eyes widened in shock. At once, I hurried over to sit beside her on the bed. "What changes is he making?"

"I don’t know. He didn’t tell me about the changes, I only scheduled the meeting with Thorne for him."

"But you’re sure it was to amend the contract."

She nodded, "he told me that much."

I ran my fingers through my hair as I felt my heart beating heavily in my chest, "I can’t believe this. Jace promised me that he didn’t have any intention to steal my company. What the hell changed? Or was he lying to me? Has he been in cahoot with Uncle Leo all this while?"

"I don’t think that is the case, I think everything changed after he met with your uncle yesterday. Whatever they talked about must have changed Jace’s stance on the matter. I’m sure by now the changes have been made, and your uncle is aware of this development."

"Holy fuck!" I got up and began to pace all over my bedroom, I could feel myself losing control once again. The control that I had struggled to contain last night was pushing against the seams, threatening to go over the edge.

"No!" I cried suddenly as I grabbed my phone, "I can’t allow this!"

Lena’s eyes widened in panic as she saw me begin to dial up a number, "what the hell are you doing?"

"I’m calling Jace right now!" I told her, "He’s gonna tell me why he’s trying to steal Beacon Studios from me!"
