Chapter 998: Might not get a hold of her anymore

[PRESENT TIME]

Heaven pressed her lips and swallowed a mouthful of saliva to soothe her throat. She had detailed to them what happened in the car, and how things went down. It could be important to them or not, but after waking up in this body, she realized just how bad Heaven’s fall was at that time.

Heaven also realized just how she messed things up for the original Hera.

If only she listened to her when she said she should jump, the original Hera, who was in this body at that time, would have had plenty of time. However, she kept hesitating and cowering, wasting every second until the last minute. Being in this body made her see what were all the things that were going on in Hera’s mind at that time. The only help the original Hera needed from her was for Heaven to remove herself from the situation.

Hence, Heaven could only blame herself.

"So Joker... stopped running?" Bear, who almost couldn’t believe what he heard, forced his words out. "He purposely got himself caught?"

Heaven nodded, eyes down. "Hera kept yelling that he runs, but no one else can control the car. Hera was wrestling with Dragon, and I just stayed there without listening to her."

The vein in Bear’s forehead pulsated, teeth clenched, hands in a tight fist. "That’s right," he breathed out, barely keeping himself together. "It was your fault. You should’ve removed yourself from the situation."

"Tsk." Moose snickered and shook his head, running his fingers through his hair. "If you jumped out at that time, Hera could’ve found a way to get out and Joker didn’t need to get himself caught. But you kept messing things up over and over."

Moose hissed as he looked back at Heaven, pointing a finger at her. "If she didn’t risk her life saving you, I would’ve strangled you myself."

Heaven clasped the blanket that was over her lap. She just woke up from a coma, and even without offering her a drink or anything, they were interrogating her. However, who was she to complain?

"She was brain dead," she whispered as she slowly lifted her eyes to Moose. "You knew... she would never wake up."

"Hah... what the fuck are you saying?"

"If we didn’t switch bodies, she would’ve been dead." Heaven gulped a mouthful, eyes on Moose. "I don’t know if I am lucky, or she is. But it seemed this world was trying to keep both of us alive. Or either of us."

"Hera wasn’t braindead —"

"Moose," called Dominic, breaking his silence after listening to what she had to say. "What she’s saying... is the truth. The operation wasn’t entirely a success; she was already brain dead when she got in that operating room."

Dominic slowly cast his gaze down at Heaven. "My doctors confirmed it for me."

"What?" Bear scoffed, casting Moose a look. "Were you trying to deceive us?"

"No," Dominic answered for him. "He’s trying to deceive himself, and we’re all willing to believe him."

He paused and rocked his head, eyes still on Heaven. "Good thing he did. Even if he didn’t, I would have kept her life support for as long as I can."

Bear opened his mouth, but in the end, he could no longer say anything. He cast Heaven another look, having this strange feeling while looking at that face.

"I got used to that face now," he murmured. "But strangely enough, looking at you feels unfamiliar."

This must be what Dominic felt the moment he saw Heaven’s eyes. It took Bear a while, but he now understood how Dominic figured it out almost immediately. Heaven and Hera, even though they had been in the same body, their aura and energy were just different. Not just that, but the look in their eyes, the tone of their voice, and even the micro changes in their facial expressions.

"Heaven, who’s at fault isn’t important anymore. We can blame you all day and night, but that wouldn’t change the situation." Dominic cleared his throat, keeping his mind together. "What we need now is solutions. Tell me. You mentioned that this world is trying to save either of you. Will you elaborate?"

Heaven nodded mildly. "When I died... I’m saying as Heaven the first time, Hera is already dead for years. But her soul kept wandering for unknown reasons. Somehow, she found me and took over my dying body."

"At first, I just thought it was a scheme she spewed to have another shot in life. I wasn’t particularly keen on living back then," she continued in the same quiet tone. "But, from what I remember at that time, my broken throat and neck from the strangling healed up quickly."

She paused and looked up at Dominic. "It’s the same when I got inside her body. From what I heard, the chances of her waking up were very low. The doctors, looking after Hera’s body, even advised Dragon to let her go."

"But then, you woke up in her body?" Bear inquired, and Heaven nodded.

"I woke up and recovered very fast," she explained. "Just like now."

"In other words, whenever you switch bodies, your soul heals up every injury you have?"

"I’m not sure if our soul has anything to do with it," she answered honestly. "But that’s what I know. Waking up in this body again is proof that every time we switch bodies, our bodies seem to mass-produce our regeneration properties. It sounds like a fantasy novel plot, but that’s all I can think of."

A moment of silence fell in the intensive care unit as they processed what Heaven said. The only one who didn’t need to dive deep into this matter was Dominic. He already had an idea because his wife told him about it in the past. Hence, his previous question about whether she could fight.

"You were in her body when you jumped in that car," Dominic trailed off, watching Heaven look back at him. "Tell me, Heaven. Do you think your injuries then would kill you?"

"No." Heaven shook her head. "Unlike her, I landed on a soft, wet ground. I would’ve gotten a few broken bones, but it’s not fatal. I’m no expert, but after being in Hera’s body, I picked up her habit of diagnosing myself."

She pressed her lips into a thin line and sighed. "She should’ve woken up earlier than me."

"I see." Dominic rocked his head in understanding, casting Bear a look. "Bear, what could’ve happened if she woke up as Hera?"

"If it’s the past, I’d say it would be bad for her enemies," Bear’s answer was quick. "But right now? I’m not really sure."

"I’m sure she’ll lose her mind," Moose chimed in seriously. "She was vocal in telling us things would have been easier if she were Hera. With everything she knows, it’s enough to piss her off and wipe out the entire underground."

"I know." Dominic nodded in understanding. "Bear, tell everyone to gather up." He paused as he held his breath, thinking of what his wife would do if she woke up as Hera.

"You have to get her before the inauguration. Otherwise..." he trailed off once more, looking at Bear and then at Moose. "Otherwise, we might not get a hold of her anymore."
