Chapter 990: She’s awake
Dominic laughed one more time, looking at his son with admiration. For a moment, he could only enjoy the look on his son’s face with relief and pride.
"Since when did you become adorable?"
"I’m always adorable!" Sebastian pouted. "Just in front of my mommy, though. But I’ll make an exception this time."
The subtle smile on Dominic’s face turned to relief, stroking his son’s hair. "Thanks, Basti. And sorry if you had to see me cry."
"It’s okay to cry, that’s what my mommy always says." Sebastian shrugged. "She said it’s more scary if people couldn’t and wouldn’t cry. She said she used to be like that, and it’s really scary."
"Is that so? I feel like I am learning more from you than you’re learning from me."
"I’m used to it since Uncle Axel learns from me."
Dominic chuckled, ruffling his son’s hair, and grateful for how good of a boy his son had become.
"If I can’t see Mommy, then can you tell her something for me?" Sebastian requested, earning a hum from his dad. "Please tell her I’ll take care of Miri just as I promised. So, she should get better so we won’t get sad and so my dad will stop crying. Tell her that."
"Sure." Dominic nodded. "I’ll surely tell her that." — maybe, she would listen to her son.
As Dominic and Sebastian were conversing, Bear, who was driving the car, couldn’t help but carry a solemn front. His grip on the steering wheel tightened as his jaw clenched.
’Hera... just how long will you stay unconscious?’ he wondered. ’You have to wake up before the inauguration because if you don’t... your husband will clean up the mess we left behind.’
After being with Dominic for the past several days, Bear had a grasp of what her husband was trying to do. He argued with Dominic a few times, but Dominic was determined to end things once and for all. He was becoming the person Heaven was so afraid to watch him become. No one could blame him, though.
Bear’s train of thought halted when he felt his phone vibrate in his chest. Without taking his eyes off the road, he answered the call and placed the phone in front of his ear. He didn’t say anything and simply listened to the person on the other end of the line.
As Bear listened, his eyes slowly dilated as he held his breath. He instinctively glanced at the rearview mirror, holding himself back from reporting to Dominic as the man was still conversing with his son.

The rest house Dominic picked where his family could stay before the inauguration was in a certain rural place that was owned by his late grandfather — mother’s side. It wasn’t as grand as the rest of their properties, but this was the least known to many people, including Dane. Dane didn’t know about this place either, thus giving more security to Dominic’s heart.
When they reached the two-story villa, countless cars were already parked outside. His parents and Grandma Zhu already arrived hours earlier than Dominic. As Dominic got out of the car and held his son to the front door, Axel was already pacing back and forth in the front yard.
"You!" Axel jumped as soon as he saw his brother entering the low gates of the villa. He marched in Dominic’s direction, blocking their path with a bitter look plastered on his face. "Where is she?"
"Hmm?"
"Don’t hmm me! What’s going on?"
Dominic stared at his brother calmly and then gazed down at Sebastian. "Basti, let’s get in."
"Bro!"
"We’ll talk later," said Dominic. "Not in front of my son."
Axel opened his mouth but then glanced down at Sebastian. He rocked his head, making way for the two of them.
"You better have a good explanation for my questions!" he warned, but Dominic simply ignored his brother.
Dominic kept his son’s hand in his grip, walking him to the front door. When they stopped, he squatted down in front of Sebastian.
"I’ll just have to talk to your Uncle Axel, okay? Knowing him, it might take me an entire night to talk sense into him," he said. "So, eat without me."
Sebastian nodded without making a fuss. Before he entered the front door as Dominic opened it for him, he looked back at his uncle. However, he said nothing and quietly got into the villa. As soon as he entered, Dominic carefully closed the door and sighed.
When he reopened his eyes, he looked back at Axel.
"Let’s talk over there," he said, jerking his chin on the bench on the front lawn and then sauntering toward it. Axel followed, but they hadn’t even sat down when he started speaking.
"Why?" Axel asked in urgency. "Why did you move everyone in here?"
Dominic drew a deep breath, turning on his heel to face his brother. "The inauguration is a crucial and dangerous time. Many people don’t want me to make the oath."
"So?" Axel furrowed his brows. "They’re trying to kill you?"
"It’s not like that..."
"Do you think I’m not aware of what you’ve been up to?" Axel continued, cutting off his brother mid-sentence. "You arrived in the country without telling anyone. Instead of visiting your children, you asked me to do all these things, and you kept meeting these people!"
"They’re good people, Axel."
"I know that. They’re good people, at least, good for this country." Axel rocked his head, almost on the edge of disbelief. "That is why I don’t understand why you would go to the extreme, to the point of blackmailing them or holding a knife at their throats."
Dominic remained quiet while Axel scoffed in disbelief.
"Do you think I don’t know that? Did you think I was not making use of the secret floor? And paying people for nothing?" Axel continued. "I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and the only explanation behind your action is her."
"Mom and Dad might’ve believed your punny excuse of using the inauguration," he added under his breath. "But I don’t. Where is she? My sister, where is she? Something bad happened to her, isn’t it?"
Again, Dominic didn’t respond. But his silence was louder than any words he could ever say at this moment.
"Bro..."
"She’s in the ICU," Dominic replied, lifting his pair of dark and gloomy eyes at his brother. "The doctors said even if the operation was a success, there’s a high chance she’d end up a vegetable."
Axel staggered back as his heart dropped to his stomach. Did he hear his brother correctly? He already assumed the worst before asking Dominic the question, but he didn’t expect it to be this bad.
"Dimitri... or rather, Dane did this to her," added Dominic. "If you’re using the secret room at its full potential, I’m sure you already know about Dane’s real identity."
Axel slowly raised his shaky eyes at his brother. Of course, he knew that. He made his research when Dominic left him a vague order to be careful of Dane. That was why Axel flipped several days ago when Dane shamelessly contacted one of Dominic’s security regarding the children.
"Dom." Suddenly, before the brothers could continue their conversation, Bear hastily approached. He stood between the brothers, glancing at Axel for a second.
"There’s no use in keeping him in the dark," Dominic reassured. "He’ll find out about it, anyway. After all, it seemed he had stationed his office on the secret floor."
Bear nodded and took a deep breath. When he huffed, he reported. "She’s awake. Moose confirmed it to me. They said she regained her consciousness."
"What?" Axel perked up while Dominic furrowed his brows.
"Then why do you have that look on your face, Bernard?"
Bear pressed his lips into a thin line; his expression was enough for Dominic to know it wasn’t all good news.
