Chapter 989: She will never go to heaven

[4 days before Dominic’s inauguration.]

"Daddy? Is Mommy okay?"

Dominic slowly turned his head to the little guy beside him in the backseat. Sebastian’s doe eyes gleamed with curiosity, waiting for his answer in anticipation. His son didn’t look for Heaven when he picked him up from his parent’s home until now when they were heading to another rest house of the family.

"Of course." Dominic smiled, ruffling Sebastian’s hair gently. "Why wouldn’t she be okay?"

"Then why didn’t she come with you?" The little master’s brows rose curiously. "She told me when she dropped us off that she would pick us up. It’s unlike her that she’s not here."

Dominic kept his lips drawn into a thin line. Before coming to pick up his family to a safer place, he already thought of many excuses to tell his son. However, as he was thinking of saying those white lies to Sebastian, he couldn’t help but think his son was smart.

Sebastian would surely see through him.

"Basti." Dominic slowly retrieved his hand from his son’s head, sighing deeply. "Mommy... she met a problem. But she will be fine. Daddy will make sure of that."

"Is she dying?"

"No."

"Then why do you look so sad?"

Dominic’s brows rose, taken aback at his son’s question. Sad? Did he look sad? After leaving Heaven in the hospital, Dominic couldn’t remember shedding a single tear. He didn’t even cry while looking at her badly beaten state. If anything, he worked himself to the bones as if he was running out of time. With how busy he was in the past several days, he couldn’t even think of his emotional state.

All he could think of was saving everything he could. Even if that means gambling with his life at stake and throwing away his morals.

Yet, his son was telling him he looked sad.

"No, I’m not sad." Dominic chuckled softly. "I’m just... tired."

Sebastian’s little hand slowly moved to hold his father’s hand. "I know Mommy is a superhero, and she always fights the bad guys. So, I was worried when she suddenly dropped us off at Grandma and Grandpa’s house."

"Can I take care of Mommy?" he asked with genuine wonder in his voice. "Daddy?"

"Basti, I told you it’s not like that..." Dominic trailed off the longer he stared into his son’s eyes.

Sebastian knew. There was no use in lying.

With that realization, Dominic couldn’t help but sigh heavily. His strong front cracked, smiling bitterly, realizing lying to his son was futile. Sebastian was smart and observant enough to read the room. Moreover, he knew his mother very well.

Heaven, no matter how busy she was, would always make time for her children. It didn’t matter if she was filming a movie or slaving in the art department. It also didn’t matter if she was busy with more shady business. At the end of the day, she would fulfill her promise to her children, especially to Sebastian, as he was already growing up.

If Heaven promised to pick them up, she would do it no matter what. Unless, of course, she was physically unable.

"Basti," called Dominic under his breath, holding his son’s little hand. "Do you trust Daddy?"

Sebastian nodded. Without a shadow of a doubt.

"Then, do you trust that Daddy will make sure Mommy will be fine?"

"Daddy loves mommy so much!" Sebastian smiled widely. "So, I know Daddy will do his best for Mommy!"

"That’s right, Basti." Dominic smiled subtly. "I’ll be honest with you. Mommy isn’t in her best state right now, but Daddy is already working and doing everything he can to make sure she’ll be fine."

He paused as he felt a lump suddenly interfering with his breathing. And before he knew it, a tear suddenly rolled down his cheek. Seeing the tear that escaped his father’s eyes, Sebastian frowned. This was the first time he had seen his father shed a tear.

Dominic had always portrayed himself in front of others as unbothered, nonchalant, and untouchable. It was to the point it was annoying and easily misunderstood. But Sebastian had seen his father’s other side; affectionate, loving, and a warm person who would do anything for his family. The side he hadn’t seen in the first five years of his life.

"So, don’t worry about her, okay?" Dominic forced a smile as he sniffed hard, wiping his tears with the back of his hand. Squeezing Sebastian’s hand mildly, he nodded at the little master encouragingly. "She’ll be fine. She has to be."

Sebastian pressed his lips into a thin line. "Can I see her?"

"Not right now, son."

"Why?"

Because if he did, Sebastian might feel sorry for her. Or rather, Sebastian would be just as devastated as him. After all, Heaven’s state was far more horrible than the time Paula tried to kill her. This time, it wasn’t just a struck-in-the-head; Heaven had a lot of many broken bones, wounds, and internal bleeding. If not for the successful operation to stop all her bleeding, she would’ve died.

It was that bad.

"I don’t think Mommy would want you to see her in such a state," was all Dominic said. "She wouldn’t want to worry you."

"But I’m already worried."

Dominic smiled as his eyes softened. "Come here," he whispered, pulling the little master and carrying him to his lap. He then kept Sebastian in the safety of his embrace. He did so to soothe his son or make sure Sebastian wouldn’t feel that worried.

But alas, Dominic felt more like it was the opposite.

Keeping his son in securely in his arms comforted him, not the little master. And when he felt Sebastian patting his back with his little hand, Dominic’s face crumpled. Only then did Dominic realize... he never had the time to fully manage his emotions about Heaven’s accident. It scared him more than the treacherous waters of the underground.

"Mommy will be fine, and Basti is sure she will be," said Sebastian, drawing his head back to look at his father’s face. "Because Mommy told Basti she doesn’t have a ticket to heaven. So she would never go there."

"She said that?" Dominic chuckled, knowing his wife probably said that in passing and what she truly meant by that.

"Mhm!" Sebastian nodded. "Also, she said she hates it when Basti cries, so she promised she would always be fine so as not to make me cry. I’m sure she doesn’t like it when Daddy cries because of her too! So, even if I’m worried, I’ll keep smiling for her and for you too. Also, for Miri."
