Chapter 988: Wake up before it’s too late
"Hera should be our priority, Moose. Think about it."
A moment of silence descended in the hall as Moose and Primo stared at each other. Neither of them talked because Primo allowed Moose to reconsider his suggestions. Although it was already in their plans, they couldn’t stay idle in this place to recover.
Primo understood the essence of recovering to full health. Considering their small number, they had to step into war in their best state. However, doing nothing also meant the widening gap between their plan and their enemies.
"Are you in love with Heaven?" Moose asked out of pure curiosity. "She’s married."
"Are you that shallow?" Primo scoffed. "Do you think I’m doing this because of such a reason? Come on. I used to be the boss, and I fuck everyone I want. It doesn’t matter if she’s an actress, a model, or even your typical convenience store cashier. I wouldn’t even need to force myself — can you see this face?"
Moose assessed Primo’s face, unable to appreciate the beauty the latter was talking about. "Ask that to others. I’m straight."
"Do you think I don’t know what you’re doing?" Primo sighed. "Don’t divert the topic. This matter is something we should face now and not tomorrow. I make sense, do I?"
"We don’t even know where exactly Dragon is and where he kept Hera."
"That’s not a problem." Moose furrowed his brows at Primo’s response. "Someone who knows him deeply has an idea of where he is right now."
"Who?"
"That woman Fig rescued? I think her name is Derby or Dumbo — something like that."
"..."
"Although I told her we might already know the information she holds, it’ll save us a lot of time if she’s right."
"Her name is not Dumbo. It’s Deborah." Moose corrected. "Also, you trust her? Even if Fig and Joker rescued them from being chopped into three hundred pieces, she still worked for Dragon. Offering us to him will guarantee her position in his organization."
"But that organization isn’t truly an organization," Primo quickly argued. "Those people he armed... weren’t truly listening to his orders. If anything, they simply didn’t have a choice."
Moose wanted to argue and question Primo’s basis. After all, they hadn’t delved deep into that matter yet. However, he couldn’t underestimate Primo’s sharp senses. Primo wouldn’t last this long if he wasn’t clever enough. If not for his complacency, he wouldn’t have lost an arm.
Not to mention, Ram confirmed that for Moose. Indirectly, but he gave a hint.
The former members of the Reapers were fighting against their will. Some were because of their loyalty, while others simply didn’t have a choice.
"I know Dominic has a plan," Primo breathed out. "But we have to make a move. We shouldn’t fight Ram. His only goal is to keep Hera safe. Once she is, I’m sure he’ll do everything in his power to end Dragon — maybe help us take down Dimitri too. Ram is a useful ally, but also a troublesome enemy. We should stick together."
Moose remained quiet, letting Primo talk him into agreeing with his suggestion. Not that Primo didn’t make a lot of sense. It was just that he was only looking from one angle, without considering other things.
"How about Dominic?" asked Moose. "Aside from Hera, if Dragon is still alive, he would surely want Heaven’s head. Dimitri worked for Dominic for years. Hence, I’m sure that man already had an idea that aside from Dominic, Heaven is a pain in the neck."
Moose slowly leaned forward, resting his arms on his spread legs, and then holding his hands in between. "Let’s say we save Hera, but do you know what that means? It means leaving Heaven and Dominic unguarded. Do you get where I’m heading? The reason we’re not saving Hera right now is because we’re pushed on defense."
"We already tried an offense, and with how bad it went, we have no other choice but to defend. The only reason Dominic confidently left his wife is because we’re here," he continued solemnly. "Until Dominic gives the green light, we have to make sure we defend ourselves successfully. Otherwise, all of his hard work — Heaven’s and even ours will go down the drain."
"Hera is an important piece, but saving her isn’t our job," he added.
"Then whose is it? Ram?"
"Exactly. Let him save her with everything he got." Moose drew a deep breath and slapped his leg, straightening his back. "If you understand that, then you should go back to your ward. You’re not immortal, especially with that special condition you have. It’ll be bad if you bleed to death and you won’t even notice it."
Primo pressed his lips into a thin line, watching Moose get up from his seat.
"I’m going to rest for now," said Moose, looking down at Primo. "And don’t do anything stupid. If you’re so afraid of the gap our enemies would make, then don’t be. We’re all runners. We’ll catch up once everything is in motion. Battling a patient fight is challenging, but time has proven that being patient at times gives better results."
With that being said, Moose turned on his heel. He waved mildly without looking back, marching away to rest after a hectic day. Primo, on the other hand, stared at Moose’s retreating figure.
"It’s not that I don’t understand his argument," he murmured, peeling his gaze from Moose’s back. "But I guess we simply believe in two different things. Perhaps we also have two different priorities."
Primo remained quiet and stayed in his spot. After minutes of being alone, Primo pushed himself up and walked away. He planned to return to his ward. But much to his dismay, he found himself standing in front of the intensive care unit where Heaven was.
He fluttered his eyelashes ever so tenderly, realizing where his feet dragged him.
"Heaven Liu," he whispered, sighing deeply, and balling his hands into tight fists. "If you were not in there, but standing in these shoes... what were you going to do?"
His expression darkened and turned gloomy, eyes still fixed on the doors. "Just when I found someone... hah. I’m giving you a chance, Heaven Liu. Wake up before it’s too late. Or else you’d wake up with a bunch of graveyards to visit."
