Chapter 984: Bluff?

"You’re not fighting for her, but rather, you’re simply trying to make amends to quench your guilt. This is for you, not for her or anybody else."

A long silence followed suit as neither Moose nor Ram spoke after the former’s remarks. After a while, Ram let out a long sigh as he looked away.

"If that is what you believed, then I don’t have anything else to say," Ram expressed quietly, setting his eyes at the side of his window. "You already believed what you want to believe. I already said this to Bear. We’re not the only members of the Reapers. You said it yourself. Many of her people were now working for Dragon. As long as she’s in his custody, they would keep jumping to fire for him."

"What happened to Wolf and Joker and even to Fig were the results of your retaliation," he continued. "That has nothing to do with me. At least, I didn’t do anything directly. Not that I was aware of it."

Ram paused and pondered calmly. "This is not for her? Sure. If that is what you believe in. But it won’t change my mind because Hera... the mere fact she’s alive and vulnerable puts more lives at risk." His expression darkened, twisting his neck to look at Moose squarely.

"You got no idea how some of those guys found a life very different from what they used to have. Some of them even got to pursue studies, a career, a small business, and even a family. Yet, because Dragon had Hera, they were forced to leave the life they were starting to build and return to what they have now," he added through his gritted teeth. "No matter how we turn the truth upside down, you are right. Facts will always be facts."

"The Reapers centered on Hera. No matter how we deny it or try to ignore it, our lives, our fate, and even our future revolved around her." He paused once more, trying his best not to get emotional. "Unless we kill her, only then we’d be able to free ourselves. But alas, neither you nor I can do that. So, it doesn’t matter to me if you think of my reasoning as shallow as quenching the little conscience I have."

"I will free her and her people in my own way." Ram huffed, his shoulders going up and down. "Once she’s safe, I’ll be the first person to mince Dragon alive. I got no personal grudge against you or anyone in your group, but I don’t mind fighting you if you stand in my way."

Moose laughed shortly, shaking his head mildly. He couldn’t argue with Ram, though. What Ram said covered the entire truth of everyone in the Reapers. No matter how skilled they were and no matter how high the position they attained in life, everything about Hera would pull them back into this damned.

Working together was not even negotiable. It was impossible.

Ram prioritized rescuing Hera while they prioritized Heaven, Dominic’s safety, and her children. The best they could do was to make sure their plans wouldn’t clash with each other. However, it seemed that was impossible and inevitable.

Moose was convinced Ram wouldn’t return to the facility just to check on Fig. The latter wanted something, and Moose had narrowed down the reasons Ram returned.

"It’s in the right," Moose spoke after minutes of silence, instructing the driver where they would drop him off. After that, he cast Ram another sidelong glance. "I guess that’s the same for us. We have nothing against you, and I fully understand your argument. However, we won’t mind fighting you if you stand in our way."

The two of them stared at each other quietly and intensely.

"Just as you said, our lives, our fates, and our future lies in her existence. One way or another, it’s true. The Cruel trained us like that." Moose rocked his head mildly. "You’re protecting the rest of the Reapers, but so we were. I’m warning you, Ram. Whatever Dragon demanded, you’d never get it. I’d rather kill Hera Cruel myself if that is the only way to stop this abomination."

A glint flickered across Ram’s eyes as he nodded. "Good luck with that," he said. "I assumed that also means you’re willing to put your life on the line."

"There’s no other way to explain it," Moose smirked. "Pull over. We’ve reached the repair shop."

The driver furrowed his brows as they just went past the intersection. He turned right, just as he said, but they were still far from any establishment. Even so, he slowly pulled over to the side of the road.

"I assume this is the last time we’d be able to talk without holding rifles at each other’s throat," Moose spoke once more, turning his head in Ram’s direction. "Do not touch Heaven Liu or Dominic Zhu, Ram. If saving the rest of the Reapers and Hera is your goal, then do so without sacrificing other people. What happened to Wolf... it can happen to you."

"Back off. I didn’t live frugally and slaved away for money to get pushed around by people in power again." He paused as he stressed his last remarks. "There are only two people I know: those who I bought, and those who were replaced by my people. Who knows? Your assistant and this driver might be on my payroll."

With that being said, Moose opened the door and stepped outside. Before he shut the door closed, he bent over and said, "Thanks for the ride. Let’s not meet again." And then he slammed the door closed and walked to the side of the road.

Meanwhile, Ram went quiet and slowly cast the side of his window a look. Moose stood on the side of the road, waiting. This was obviously not a repair shop, but that was simply an excuse.

"He had grown so much," he murmured, peeling his eyes from Moose to the front. "Let’s go."

Ram’s assistant defended first. "Sir, I’m not on his payroll — I swear!"

"I know," Ram chuckled. "It was simply a warning. You two might not be on his payroll, but it’s not impossible if he planted one or two people around me."

His assistant sighed heavily as he cast the driver a look. The driver looked back at him quietly before driving away. Surely, all the core members of the Reapers were just as intimidating as Ram. They had been holding their breaths during Moose and Ram’s conversation, ready to take action if the two ended up fighting.

"Nevertheless..." Ram trailed off, staring out the window as they sped away. "... things are clearer now."

"Sir?" the assistant looked back as he felt Ram’s sentence was incomplete. However, Ram didn’t say anything anymore and went completely quiet.

’He had grown...’thought Ram. ’... because now, he successfully made me doubt everyone around me. I know he was bluffing, but he is forcing me to take extra precautions. How troublesome. It’s not like I truly plan to give Heaven Liu to Dragon.’

"Aside from Heaven Liu... Dragon and Dimitri clearly want Dominic Zhu out of the picture," he murmured. "They should worry about that more."
