Chapter 982: Matter of priorities
Meanwhile...
[Bring me Heaven Liu — I want her alive.]
Dragon’s request replayed in Ram’s head like a broken record. Dragon didn’t explain why he wanted Heaven and why he wanted her alive. However, Ram was not interested. Dragon’s reason could stretch into a variety of wicked reasoning.
It didn’t matter.
What mattered was he wanted Heaven. No one else.
"What a troublesome deal," Ram muttered, turning his head to his side of the window in the backseat. "Truly a troublesome deal."
A deep sigh escaped him, pinching the bridge of his nose in distress. Although he didn’t disclose what he knew about Heaven’s situation, he knew Dragon had ideas that Ram knew the situations of his former comrades. It was the very reason Dragon unhesitatingly asked him to basically betray his former colleagues and bring Heaven to him.
"Sir." Suddenly, a voice from the front passenger seat snapped Ram back to the current lapse. "Here are the results of the election you asked me to look into."
Ram arched a brow as he glanced at the tablet from the front passenger seat. He reached for it and slowly moved it in front of him.
"Dominic Zhu won the election," said the assistant solemnly. "He had the highest votes among all the candidates, which surpassed the surveys before the election."
As the assistant gave out the brief details of the election, Ram scrolled down the articles his assistant put together. There were also clips of Dominic and his campaign officers cheering for the good results of their hard work.
A businessman being elected to a position was not new to any country. Even actors could run for politics and some of them succeeded in securing a spot. After being in this position for many years, he had seen tons of things. And these clips showed how the public perceived and approved of Dominic Zhu.
"This is not a surprise," he muttered. "Everyone expects him to win even without doing underhanded means. He had a good PR and his track record as the CEO of the Lyon Group was enough to secure his spot."
"He’ll have fourteen days before his inauguration. It’s a crucial time for him because people would use this to find fault in him."
Ram snapped his eyes up at the front passenger seat and sighed. He wanted to say something, but he ended up gazing down at the tablet once more.
"Was this recorded recently?" he asked out of curiosity.
"It was a clip of the night of the election."
"The night of the election, huh?" Ram watched another clip of Dominic smiling in front of the tons of cameras outside his campaign office. "Did he leave his wife to attend the election?"
"From what I heard, yes. He flew out with Bernard to show up to the election day."
"Meaning, he left his wife the same night or several hours after her operation?" Ram hummed, rocking his head in understanding. "Why?"
His assistant from the front passenger seat only stared at Ram. He also didn’t know the answer to that. They had a good impression of Dominic. After all, Ram had previously had an exchange of calls with Dominic. And from what Ram could tell, Dominic valued his family, and that his sole purpose of running for a political position was to protect them in a way he couldn’t protect being a businessman.
It was something one wouldn’t want to hear from someone planning to be a part of the government. But for Ram, it was enough to gain his favor.
Yet, Dominic left his wife to attend his election?
"Was it just a front?" asked the assistant. "I don’t think he would leave his wife if she’s that important to him."
"No." Ram shook his head, eyes still on the article narrating the positive public feedback of the election. "He had to attend this election."
The assistant furrowed his brows, waiting for a more extensive explanation.
"With his participation in the incident, he had to go away as far as he could to protect those precious to him," Ram explained. "Considering Heaven was in an intensive care unit, and his children were too young to protect themselves, he’s luring everyone who wants his head by putting himself in the spot."
"It’s like saying, ’I am here, come and get me,’ to everyone who wants his head," he continued quietly. "It’s a message."
Ram paused, watching Dominic making a speech to thank everyone in the campaign office after seeing the results. "I’m sure everyone who had seen these results also knew that. If they didn’t come for him, Dominic would come at them once his inauguration period was over. He might be planning his steps as we speak."
"They could target his family, but that would earn them a formidable enemy." Ram put down the table and turned his head at the window. "Until now, I can’t help but wonder how Dominic got all wrapped up in this mess with the Reapers. But aside from that, it’s undeniable that him being a part of this situation was a problem for those against them."
"I don’t have any personal grudges against Dominic Zhu, but he’s also in the way of achieving my goal." He tapped his finger on the side of the car, pondering the situation. "Now that Dragon asked for Heaven Liu, I wonder if Dominic was truly a threat and had already considered everything."
"What are we going to do now, sir?"
Ram slowly snapped his eyes at his assistant and immediately locked eyes with him. The latter was already looking back, waiting for his boss’ order.
"Let’s head to the facility," ordered Ram calmly. "At the end of the day, they might be my friends. However, we are now fighting on different sides. I am fighting for Hera, and them... I don’t know anymore."
"Yes, sir."
With that being said, the assistant cast the driver a look. Even before he could say anything, the driver switched lanes as their destination changed. Meanwhile, Ram remained quiet as he kept his eyes on the side of the road.
’Neither of us were fighting for the wrong or right,’ he told himself. ’It’s just a matter of priority. I don’t judge them for their lack of care for Hera, but I hope they won’t blame me for wanting to protect her.’
