Chapter 980: Use you to the bones
On the other side of the world...
"Don’t you have anything to say to me? Like... ’I’m sorry?’"
Ram sat quietly in a wooden chair, wearing a solemn yet sharp look on his face. His eyes were fixed on the injured man sitting up on the bed. Even though the bruises on the latter’s face didn’t look as bad with a deep cut on the side of his lips, he could tell Dragon was badly injured.
One of the things Dragon hated the most, even during his time in the Reapers, was appearing vulnerable to others. But for him to accept Ram’s visit in such a state, only meant Ram did a winning gamble in coming in here himself.
"You got the hell of a nerve to come here on your own, Ram," Dragon hissed, wincing a little as he held his side. "You know I can order to kill you now, considering your betrayal."
"I didn’t betray you."
"You didn’t?"
"I did what you told me to do," Ram argued calmly. "I threw Dimitri’s peaceful den in chaos, burned his warehouses, and killed his people."
Dragon scoffed, looking at the old man with ridicule. "Do you see me as a pushover, Ram? Did you come here to make me look like an idiot?"
"All I’m saying is the truth. I indeed agreed to work with Bernard, but our target isn’t you. So I didn’t see any problem with that."
"But you know they’re also planning to take me down!" Dragon’s breath hitched as a striking pain struck his side. "Damn it. It’s all that woman’s fault I’m in this situation."
Ram observed Dragon quietly, wondering if this was Heaven’s doing. He heard the summary of what happened before he left the facility where the rest of the Reapers were. Initially, he was a little doubtful and even mentally criticized everyone for "dragging" Dominic’s wife into this sort of mess. But seeing Dragon and how terrible his state was, he had some second thoughts.
Dominic’s wife was probably that skilled to cause Dragon this much damage. If not for Joker messing things up, Ram wondered if Dragon would still be alive.
"I’m sure you allowed me to see you under these circumstances without expectations of a pathetic apology." Ram broke his momentary silence as he delved back to the purpose of his visit. "You still need me and until you have Hera, you know I’d listen to your every whim. Although I didn’t tell you that those guys were coming to you that day, I wasn’t obliged to do so. It wasn’t part of our deal."
Dragon glared daggers at the old man, scoffing at him mockingly.
"When we had our deal, all you asked of me was to take down Dimitri. You had tons of enemies out there, and I can’t handle all of them for you," Ram added indifferently. "What happened to you is a result of your negligence and complacency. This is the life you chose, Frankie. Therefore, you have to accept that every second that you breathe, someone else wishes it’ll be your last. And every time you close your eyes, people would take it as a weak state to make sure you’d never open them."
"That’s how it is to be in that position," he added. "You, of all people, should know the struggles and sacrifices she had to make to keep that position. The only difference between the two of you is that she had to maintain her position for her people. But you, you only have to keep that position for yourself."
A moment of silence descended on the room as both of them stared at each other. After a while, Dragon smirked and laughed, holding his side to keep it from hurting.
"You always speak so nobly as if you know it all," said Dragon, leaning back to rest comfortably. "Yet, you know too little about the truth."
"Truth?"
Dragon cocked his head to him, smirking. "See? You don’t know?" he chuckled, shaking his head mildly. "But anyway, you’re right. Even if I want to shoot you in the head now, I still need you. Dimitri is still alive — Romnick’s team got away."
"From what I heard, Dimitri also lost quite some important figures in his team."
"Important?" Dragon chuckled in ridicule as he looked away. "There’s nothing or no one’s important to Dimitri aside from himself. Everyone could die, and he couldn’t care less. As long as he’s alive, that’s all that matters to him."
"He sounds just like you," Ram commented. "No wonder you two hit it off."
Dragon cast Ram a sidelong glance. "You’re right. That’s why we hit it off because we’re alike, one way or another. We both want to gain something from each other and even if we call each other brothers, we know it’ll never happen because we could never live in the same timeline."
"Was that a punishment for yourself?" Ram wondered genuinely. "After betraying Hera and everyone, and turning your back on their loyalty to reach your ambition, was partnering up with someone like Dimitri a way of punishment?"
"I’m not as noble as that, Ram. You said it yourself. I can’t trust anyone — even myself. Partnering up with someone like me makes it easier to betray him." Dragon shrugged with an air of nonchalance. "Anyway, if you’re done asking silly questions, let’s get down to business. Before you came here, I was just thinking about how to deal with you."
He cast Ram an apathetic look. "Do you know what that means? It means I’m planning to forget about our agreement."
"That sounds logical, considering you already made yourself believe I betrayed you."
"Don’t act like you’re not planning to do that." Dragon scoffed. "We both know that once you get what you want, you’ll do everything to kill me. But until then, I’m planning to use you to the bones."
"What do you want me to do?" Ram arched a brow as his expression sharpened. "If going after Dimitri is what you want, then I’m already on it."
"No." Dragon chuckled, shaking his head. "Bringing me Dimitri’s head is already part of our agreement. You need to offer more than that if you still want this alliance — if you still want to ensure Hera’s safety. Because right now, all I want to do to that bitch is kill her. But I can’t kill her while she’s unconscious; I want her to feel every pain and suffering, and watch how the life in her eyes disappears."
Ram’s expression darkened, but he maintained his composure. "Then who do you want now?"
"Heaven Liu," Dragon’s answer was quick; he didn’t even need a second to think about it. "Bring me Heaven Liu — I want her alive."
