Chapter 979: Be back later

Meanwhile...

Standing beside the bed, Moose stared at Heaven intensely. He glanced at the monitors near his vantage point and then at the equipment connected to her. Last night, she woke up for a brief moment and almost had a cardiac arrest. Although they were able to stabilize her vitals, she almost died.

As a doctor, he could only hope that wouldn’t happen again. She might die next time.

"I can’t even tell you you should’ve been careful," he murmured under the protective mask. "Things are bad here, boss. They’re very bad."

His jaw tightened, recalling the news he just heard from one of his men. According to them, they heard that Wolf was arrested. Neither Bear nor Dominic contacted them, but Moose’s intel in these types of things was faster. The news could’ve reached Dominic or not, but that didn’t matter.

"Back then, you gave me a hard task." Slowly, Moose lifted the pistol in his hand and pointed it at the unconscious patient. "You said I should make sure you’re dead if problems arise before you were buried."

He carefully placed his finger on the trigger, eyes fixed on Heaven’s face. "Should I do that now?" he wondered to himself.

If Heaven died, then she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. Not just Heaven, but all the people who were hopeful for her recovery wouldn’t have to suffer. They wouldn’t have to wait for her, nor would they get hurt for long.

It was one of Heaven — or rather, Hera’s orders to him in the past.

When she was slowly "dying" on her deathbed, Hera had one worry. She was worried that the mercy kill wouldn’t work. She knew if it failed, Bear would be under fire. After all, everyone except Bear opposed the idea. They wanted to keep her alive even if she could no longer get out of bed on her own.

"The situation in the past... is the same now," he whispered, recalling how he refused to do the order. "If I had done that, would this all happen? Did I fuck up your second life, boss?"

Seeing her lying in this bed with all these machines and tools to keep her alive was not a pleasant thing to see. For sure, Heaven didn’t want to see herself in this situation. His grip on the pistol trembled, clenching his teeth as he closed his eyes. But instead of pulling the trigger, Moose dropped his hand to the side and sighed deeply.

"I can’t," he whispered, snapping his eyes open as he gazed at her. "I can’t do it, Hera. I can’t."

Moose clicked his tongue in irritation as he huffed. "Before the mission, Wolf told me he had a bad feeling about it. He said you shouldn’t get too involved. We should’ve listened to the old man’s sharp intuition."

He slowly wobbled down, sitting on the floor, his back against the side of the bed. He bent his knees, resting his arms over his knees, looking at the pistol in his hand.

"Boss, I heard Wolf was arrested," he said, hoping she could hear him. "Joker was captured and Ram... I don’t know what the fuck that old man is up to. But for sure, I can’t trust him. He thinks you are still in your body."

A bitter smile turned up on his face as he chuckled. "Your husband and Bear went back home, and I hadn’t heard from them. I still don’t know if they already heard about what happened to Wolf, or if they’re still alive. But I can’t bring myself to tell Tiger and the rest about it."

"Tiger, especially, will march to the Interpol if he heard about Wolf. You know him," he continued. "Fig is fine, and I’m sure he would also do the same. You should wake up even if it’s hard, and don’t die yet."

"If you die now, then everyone you tried to protect will die as well. All your efforts would go down the drain," he added under his breath. "Our enemies wouldn’t even need to go to us to kill us. But those idiots will march to their deaths themselves. Dominic said you mentioned that we’re also a part of your precious family. If so, then you should wake up as soon as possible. Don’t sleep too long, or else you’ll wake up while everyone else is dead."

A moment of silence dominated the intensive care unit. The slow heart rate sound rhythmically filled the gaps in the quietness. Moose stayed on the floor, playing with the pistol in his hand while thinking about their dreadful situation.

What was dreadful in this situation wasn’t the fact they lacked manpower or that their enemies had them cornered. That was the least dreadful part. What truly concerned Moose was the fact that he knew how reckless everyone was and without Heaven, there was no order.

Dominic did a perfect job of talking sense into them. However, with Wolf’s arrest and without Dominic around, those who are still in the facility could do whatever the hell they pleased. That was why Moose locked himself in the intensive care unit to talk to an unconscious patient, hoping this news was enough to wake her up.

"We have so much to do, yet so little time," he muttered and sighed heavily, turning his head back and up to the patient. Another sigh escaped him as he slowly pushed himself up. When he was back on his feet, he stared at her for a long time.

"You should wake up," he repeated under his breath. "Wake up and don’t dare wake up in a vegetative state, hmm? You can’t do that to us — to me. Because if you end up like that, I will have to end you. Don’t make me do that; that’s something you shouldn’t make me do."

Moose slowly patted her hand mildly. "I still have to check on those idiots. Be back later." He smiled a bit, patting her hand more before he turned around to leave. As he did so, he let out another deep exhale and forced a smile, knowing he couldn’t show to everyone that things were going south for them.

Little did he know, the moment he turned around and walked away, Heaven’s finger moved slightly.
