Chapter 978: Give up my life
Chapter 978: Give up my life
[I am always the main goal because I am the best. But to be honest, I’m not always on people’s top lists.]
[I remember a few formidable enemies in the past. All of them didn’t target me first. They went for Ram and Wolf first, and then Joker and a few people I deployed around the world. Can you guess why?]
[Not to brag, but for them, I am like a giant. They can’t come straight for my head, but rather, they will try to cut my toes one by one and then come after my limbs.]
(Note: The Chapter reference above is Chapter 735: Why’s the sudden interest?)
There was a certain part of the past that Dominic asked his wife about who were the people her enemies would want dead just as much as their desire to kill her. Heaven simply gave him a vague list of the people Dominic personally knew who originally worked for her.
And now, everything she had said in the past was coming to reality.
Wolf was arrested, the enemies captured Joker, and Ram was nowhere to be found. Aside from Ram, the other two had been a great help to their team for communication and information.
"What should we do now?" Bear asked under his breath, driving carefully with his grip on the steering wheel tight. "Now that Wolf is arrested, I don’t think it’s easy for us to get him out of there. Dragon can’t do that. I’m sure it’s Dimitri’s doing."
Dominic went quiet, keeping his eyes on the side of the road.
"Dom," Bear called once more when he heard nothing in return. "Do you have plans now?"
"It’s a mistake," Dominic murmured, deep in thought. "I didn’t reconsider that Dane knows a lot of things and was too focused on the fact he might kill us all in a barbaric way."
His jaw tightened, hand balled into a tight fist. "How can I miss that detail?"
"This is not the time for self-loathing," Bear remarked. "It’s not just your fault, but all of us. We should’ve known that Dimitri would go after Wolf. After working with Dragon, we should’ve predicted Dragon gave out a lot of useful information about us. From what happened a few days ago, it was easy to gather evidence to prove Wolf was using the Central Intelligence’s resources for his own gain."
Bear drew a deep breath, keeping his head clear and not allowing his emotions to overwhelm him. "Though I’m sure Wolf will not die behind bars. Even if some people would try, he’s skilled enough to last long. Moreover, the authorities would want information from him. So, they’d give him extra protection until then."
"We have to move forward," he added. "Even without Wolf, we have to move forward toward our goal."
Dominic was still quiet as he repeated his wife’s remarks in the past. "I’m next," he whispered. "Dane will go after me."
"What?"
"If I’m going to think like Dane, I would go after me," he explained vaguely, eyes still on the side road, his expression dark. "Hera once told me that from people’s perspective, she’s like a giant. After most of the secrets she had and the plans she laid out, I don’t doubt it. So I also don’t doubt that the effective way to take down a giant like her is to go after her limbs first."
"She named Wolf and Ram, and then Joker..." he continued, almost humming. "At this point, if I’m going to follow her advice, I would believe Ram would be the next. However, considering Ram isn’t truly working with us and has a different goal, Dane wouldn’t target him. At least, not for now."
Bear went quiet as he listened to Dominic’s remarks.
"Not to mention, Dragon is still out there. When I found out that Dragon and Dimitri were working together, and the founder of the organization was Dimitri, I had always wondered; why did Dimitri let a newcomer take charge of the organization?" Dominic paused, mentally backtracking on every little detail to get the right answers this time.
They couldn’t fail just like how they failed to see through Wolf’s arrest.
"That smart bastard." Bear clicked his tongue as he realized what Dominic was saying. "He was planning to use Dragon as his scapegoat if things went south, huh?"
"Considering he’s manipulative and talented, that’s not a surprise." Dominic closed his eyes to rest them. "It’s the main reason he won’t target Ram for now. Dragon might still be unconscious or have regained consciousness. Either way, I’m sure he won’t let Ram off so easily. If he killed Ram, it would be easier to pin all the other crimes to Dragon, as they were connected one way or another."
"It’s a win-win for Dane," he added solemnly. "He would get rid of his enemies and Dragon, at the same time, no one will come after him."
"That’s why instead of Ram, he will come after you?" Bear remarked in a questioning tone, although he didn’t need an answer for that. "That makes sense. You know a lot about him."
"I thought he would come after me first, but I was wrong. I forgot Wolf is the biggest problem in the group."
"Now that Wolf was arrested, he’d come after you."
"That’s right."
"But... meeting the ambassador of Sorrento and the minister of defense wouldn’t be enough to protect you."
"I know." Dominic slowly reopened his eyes, and a glint immediately flashed across them. "But if the purpose is giving them information to start an investigation on him, that’s enough."
He slowly snapped his eyes at the driver’s seat. "We lost Wolf, but because Dane targeted him first, he lost the chance of being able to claim innocence. One’s data is important and once the government started putting his life under a microscope, there would be no escape for him. No matter how many identities he steals. Isn’t that the reason Hera deployed Wolf to the CIA to protect her people?"
A moment of silence dominated the car as neither of them spoke for a while.
What Dominic said was true. The purpose of his meetings was to attack Dane. Although they hit a blow because of Wolf’s arrest, they also hit Dane differently. Dane might not feel the pain yet, but he would feel it eventually. It was a slow-acting effect.
"So, what now?" Bear broke the silence after some time. "Now that we’re sure he’ll come for you next, what should be our plan to stop it?"
"We won’t." Dominic set his sharp eyes ahead. "Let him come after me."
Bear furrowed his brows as he cast Dominic a quick look.
"The only way for him to stop is if I’m dead," Dominic explained. "Fighting to live will only give him more reason to drag my children into this. So... I’ll let him do what he wants. I’ll give up my life."
