Chapter 968: They already knew
Meanwhile...
After Dominic stayed in the chapel, he went back to the hallway where the surgery room was. When he arrived, no one aside from Tiger was there anymore. That was not important. Even if everyone stayed in here, it wouldn’t help.
Dominic walked toward the chair and sat three chairs from Tiger.
"I thought you were with Ivy. She needs you," Dominic spoke, casting Tiger a side-eye. "What are you doing here?"
Tiger didn’t respond. He didn’t even move, keeping his stance with his arms on his legs, eyes on his linked hands in between.
"You should also get your injuries dressed up," Dominic continued despite getting ignored. "Even if you didn’t get injured earlier, you’re already injured before that. Your wounds might open up and it’ll be troublesome if you’re not in your best state when the enemies make their move again."
"Dominic Zhu," Tiger spoke after another minute of silence. "Do you know this same facility is where she died back then?"
Dominic furrowed his brows, a little surprised at this revelation.
"This facility is something her mother funded in exchange for a safe place for her injured people to recover. It’s basically their hospital, but also accepts other patients aside from the organization," Tiger explained. "The doctors who diagnosed Hera were someone we trusted with our lives, but in the end, that same person Mom picked up from the mud colluded with Dragon."
Tiger paused as if he was thinking of what to say next. However, all that came out of him was silence. He didn’t need to say more because Dominic already understood his point, though. Dominic snapped his eyes at the shut door of the surgery room.
"Is that why, instead of staying with Ivy, you’re here?" Dominic inquired quietly.
"No."
Dominic arched a brow, gazing at Tiger’s side profile. "No?"
"I want to hear her condition as soon as Moose comes out of that door," Tiger kept his answer short and simple. "So, I’d know if I should drive back to where those motherfuckers were and kill as many as I can before they kill me."
Dominic’s lips parted but then looked away. His gaze fell to the floor, unable to say anything to Tiger. He almost wanted to tell him that his reactions were making Dominic, the husband, look pathetic. But then again, if he was in Tiger’s shoes, he would probably do the same as him.
"The last thing I want to do in this life is bury her again," Tiger added under his breath, letting out an airy, short laugh. "She’s the reason I’m in here. If not for her, I’d probably be dead a long time ago. I buried her once, and I’m not going to go through that again."
"She won’t die."
Tiger snickered, snapping his eyes at Dominic. "You sound so sure about that."
"I just know that she’s someone who wants to shamelessly live even when she knew she deserved death more than anyone." A momentary smile appeared on Dominic’s face. "Her will to live is so strong she would make the impossible possible. For instance, inhabiting an entirely different person’s body. So I know, she’d make it."
"Do you believe that?" Tiger returned.
"I have to." The subtle smile on Dominic’s face disappeared, setting his eyes on the surgery room. "I don’t have a choice. Our kids are waiting for us."
Tiger let out another short scoff, gazing down once more. In a way, he wanted to believe Dominic and his spirit. After all, if there was someone who was deeply worried about Heaven, that would be her husband.
"Though I’m surprised that Moose led the operation," Dominic remarked. "All this time, I thought he was simply bragging and conning No One."
"He used to be a doctor. The best of the best."
"For someone to have a good career and still end up in the underground... I’m not saying it’s silly, but it’s amusing in a way."
Tiger chuckled as he cast Dominic a look. "Don’t tell me you’re still surprised about that? When you know some people in the underground like Wolf and Ram managed to be important figures out there."
"I’m not, but Moose is still appalling."
"It’s a long story but I don’t think I’m the one to tell that story," said Tiger. "But to give you a short context, when one always fights for the good and the only backup they got was their excellence in their field, they end up in a tight situation against those people with money and power."
Dominic kept his eyes on the floor and rocked his head in understanding. He didn’t need to hear more to grasp Tiger’s point. It was another rich trampling the poor scenario. As cliche as it sounded, this was a sad reality that existed in the world. It only showed how privileged Dominic was because he didn’t have to go through that in the past.
As silence befell their shoulders, the lights above the door suddenly turned off. Hearing it buzzed faintly, Dominic and Tiger turned their heads and rose from their seats on instinct. They didn’t waste a breath, rushing to the door and waiting for someone to come out.
They waited with bated breaths, taking a hurried step when the door slowly opened from the inside.
"How is she?" Dominic inquired as soon as Moose came into sight, while Tiger stood beside him with equal anticipation and anxiety.
"Moose," Tiger called under his breath. "Is she okay?"
Moose darted his weary eyes between the two men, ruffling his hair slowly. When he snapped his eyes back at the two pairs of eyes burning with anticipation, he ran his tongue across his inner cheek.
"I don’t know," he answered after a few seconds.
"What?" Dominic and Tiger furrowed their brows, confused. "What do you mean by that?"
"If you’re asking if she’s still alive, then the answer is yes," Moose clarified, almost making the two heave a sigh of relief. However, they couldn’t do so with that look plastered on Moose’s face. "However, aside from the head injury from her fall, she had a cardiac arrest during the surgery. Although we managed to get her pulse back, her brain lost oxygen for half a minute."
"What?" Tiger staggered back, his eyes reddening. "You mean...?"
"Shit." Moose looked away as he ruffled his hair once again. "Shit, shit, shit."
Moose couldn’t bring himself to say what to expect as he just cursed repeatedly, slamming the bottom of his fist against the door. Dominic, on the other hand, breathed out through his parted mouth as he gazed down.
They didn’t need to hear what Moose was trying to say. They already knew.
Even if the surgery was a success, the chances of her being a vegetable were high.
