Chapter 969: The human body is amusingly fragile.

The sound of the slow heartbeat from the monitor was equally soothing and dreadful in Dominic’s ears. Sitting beside the bed in the intensive care unit with complete hospital gear on, he kept his eyes on his wife. Different apparatus were injected into her to support her breathing and monitor her vitals.

Initially, he heard that she had jumped out of the car. But from what Moose said, he deduced she was probably thrown out because of how bad her fall was. Jumping out of the car was dangerous, but they said if she had done it on her own, she would’ve anticipated it and was able to reduce the damages.

But her injuries told them otherwise.

Heaven hit her head with something and because of that, she ended up in here. Amusingly enough, that was the only fatal injury she got. Just one major injury, and she’s threading in between life and death.

[You should be careful, Dom. The human body is amusingly fragile. One wrong step, and you’d end up dead.]

While looking at his wife, he couldn’t help but remember the advice his wife gave to him some time ago. It wasn’t like he didn’t believe his wife back then. But now, that advice felt more dreadful.

"The date..." he whispered, reaching for her hand and holding it gently. "You said we’ll go on a date after rescuing them so we can unwind and have a short break. Was that a lie?"

His eyes slowly fell on her hand, only to see some tubes injected into the back of her hand and a small device clipped on her finger. His jaw tightened, gulping the tension in his throat, lifting his eyes back to her.

"Moose said even if the surgery is a success, you might end up a vegetable," he continued under his breath. "I don’t believe him. I don’t want to — I can’t."

Dominic shook his head mildly, not noticing how his breath slowly turned heavy each time. "Because if I do, I only got two options: take away this life support from you or completely ignore your wishes and hold on to you until the end."

Knowing his wife, she wouldn’t appreciate being kept alive through life support. She had mentioned it before because she had been through it once. She didn’t want the people she cared for to suffer or get stuck in one place. If anything, she wanted them to let her go and move on with their lives. And she knew for them to continue with their life, she had to be dead.

It was the reason she chose a mercy kill as Hera Cruel.

Despite everyone’s opposition, it only compelled her to go with it.

[Did you regret it?] was a question he asked in the past out of pure curiosity. Dominic could still remember the smile that appeared on her face as she answered;

[Yes, I did. More than anyone. But... I’d still make the same decision if I’m going back in time.]

It was a strange answer, something that he didn’t expect. But now he understood why she gave such an answer. Because all this time, his wife never truly put herself in her own situation, but often thought of the other person’s shoes. Perhaps because she knew that those who weren’t lying helplessly on the bed only thought of her. Thus, she never worried about herself. She already had a lot of people to worry for her.

"Hera..." Dominic whispered as he slowly bent over until his forehead was touching her hands while cradling it with both of his hands. "Don’t... do this to me, my love. You know I will never let you go."

A long silence followed his remarks as the heart rate monitor synced with it. Dominic stayed in his position, but strangely, not a single tear rolled out of his eyes. When he raised his head, he planted a soft peck on the back of her hand.

"Just rest — take as much rest as you need," he muttered, forcing a subtle smile onto his face. "I’ll do my best to take care of everything outside."

Dominic rocked his head as his eyes softened. "I’ll keep our children safe... and also your people. I won’t die, Hera. So, focus on regaining your strength and come back to me in full health, hmm?" he caressed her cheek with the back of his back, his fingers quivering as a layer of tears coated his eyes.

"I’ll wait for you," he added under his breath. "No matter how long. Even if my hair turns gray, I’ll wait. Unless you wake up and are fine, I’ll be stuck in one place waiting for you."

Another moment of silence hung in the air. Dominic drew a deep breath and then slowly released her hand. He kept his eyes on her for a while, nodding reassuringly, as if he had already made up his mind. However, that was not the question anymore.

Dominic believed she was the only one for him. Therefore, even if he knew his wife would prefer death than to be on life support, he would never in a lifetime let her go. Think of it as her curse or maybe a gift; either way, he would never give her the option of leaving him, especially in such a manner.

With that thought in mind, Dominic rose from his seat after some time of idling. Before reaching the exit, he looked back at her one last time. His jaw tightened as his eyes glinted, taking a good long stare at his wife before looking away.

When he stepped out of the exit, there was a small sterilized place where two nurses stood on standby. They helped him remove the gown, mask, head cap, and gloves he was wearing. And after that short process, Dominic stepped out of the intensive care unit.

As soon as he did, he snapped his eyes on everyone outside. They also looked in his direction with grave expressions plastered on their faces, rising from their seats. After meeting everyone’s gazes, Dominic breathed out a deep breath.

"Bear, did you do what I asked you to?"

Bear nodded. "I know someone we can trust to look after this ward. Wolf also summoned some of his trusted men and put this area under their surveillance."

"Good." Dominic nodded, running his gaze at them. "Let’s go. The battle they started is far from over yet."
