Chapter 966: They got him

[Secluded health facility]

Dominic sat quietly in the small chapel inside the facility. His eyes were fixed on the cross on the altar. He didn’t know how long he had been here, but he was sure it was longer than an hour.

’Why am I even here?’he wondered to himself for the umpteenth time. ’I just killed someone — a few people today. So, why am I here?’

When Dominic arrived in this place, there was a small part of him that believed everyone was simply overreacting. His wife was strong, and thus, it was almost impossible for her to inflict heavy injuries. The worst he could think of was that she was shot, but not fatally.

But after hearing what happened, he didn’t have the heart to listen more.

He heard enough.

And before he knew it, he found himself in this chapel within the facility.

’Should I have gone with her, instead?’ he wondered to himself. ’Would things change if I stuck with her? Instead of going to a different place?’

To be honest, Dominic was not confident enough to conclude an answer. What happened to his wife was not because of her negligence, but because of Joker’s complacency. Maybe Heaven had her faults too. However, how could he blame his wife when she had been in the surgery room for hours now?

"I’m shameless, aren’t I?" he murmured, eyes still on the cross. "After taking people’s lives today and maybe, in the future, here I am, having the urge to beg you to save her."

The corner of his mouth curled up bitterly, his lips quivering. "Can you do that?" he continued under his breath. "Can you save her? I’m sure you don’t want someone like her in Heaven. So, you have no reason to take her there."

"I don’t justify the actions she had taken and the means she had done to survive her world." he paused, swallowing the lump that built up in his throat. "But... she is a good mother. Don’t make me... take her home with just her body. We might be sinful, but those kids... don’t let them get hurt."

At the back of Dominic’s mind, he knew whoever he was praying for would find him a hypocrite. What he was praying for was so shameless of him. After seeing and experiencing the life his wife had, he deeply understood why she accepted her death so easily in the past.

What Heaven, or rather, Hera, had done throughout her life, was beyond redemption. Praying to any deity or even praying to the devil felt like a sin in itself. But here he was, shamelessly praying for his wife’s well-being.

"Hera..." he whispered, gazing down, eyes softening. "... if you were in my shoes, I wonder what you’re going to do next?"

Despite the heaviness and pain in his heart, Dominic hadn’t realized that he hadn’t shed a single tear. Perhaps it was because of what he went through the day that the adrenaline was still in his system. Or maybe, because until now, a part of him knew this was far from over.

Meanwhile, in one of the private rooms in the facility, Primo and Bear sat in each of their seats in silence. Tiger was not around as he admitted Ivy for her injuries. Fig was still resting, but the doctors said he would be fine. Thankfully, his fat protected him and the bullets that went through his body didn’t hit any vital points. Dominic, on the other hand, just disappeared. None of them had the energy to look for him. And Moose was still in the surgery room to save Heaven.

So, it was just Primo and Bear.

"What now?" After a prolonged silence, Primo finally broke his silence as he gazed up at the man sitting on the one-seated couch. "What should we do, Bernard?"

Bear kept his eyes on the glass of whiskey in his hand, arms resting on his spread legs. "We wait."

"Wait?"

"Until Moose comes out and tells us she’s safe," Bear replied listlessly, staring at himself at the still whiskey in the glass. "We will wait."

Primo scoffed, opening and closing his mouth, but couldn’t voice out his thoughts. He could only click his tongue, reaching for the decanter and pouring himself a glass of whiskey. Without further ado, he chugged down the drink in one go, hissing as he felt a painful constriction in his stomach.

"You should go," said Bear, earning Primo’s attention once again. "You were still injured and I’m sure what happened aggravated your injuries."

Bear then pointed at Primo’s bloody inner white suit. "That blood over there was yours. It seemed your injuries opened up."

Primo planted his palm on his side, only to feel the fresh sticky liquid on his palm. When he gazed down, he realized Bear was right.

"Shit," whispered Primo as he clicked his tongue once more. He clasped his hands into a tight fist, pounding the bottom of his fist against the surface of the small table. "Shit! This shouldn’t have happened!"

Bear didn’t react even when the decanter tipped over from the impact. All he could do was stare at Primo, realizing this little guy right here was more concerned than what anyone would expect. Quite surprising for someone who went to jail because of Heaven.

"Get your wounds dressed up," Bear remarked. "We don’t want more casualties than we already had."

Primo shifted his burning gaze to Bear, scoffing. "Why... are you so damn calm?"

"Because throwing a huge feat won’t fix it," Bear’s answer was quick. "Primo — I mean, Alexander Cafre, I won’t ask why you’re suddenly acting as if you care for her so much. But... do not question how we react to things."

He shook his head mildly while maintaining eye contact. "This is far from over, young man. Losing our temper now or letting our emotions out now is the same as putting nails in her coffin. Dragon is still out there, and Dimitri as well. I’m sure they were already aware of her, and thus, they would surely attack while she’s out here, fighting for her life."

"Not shedding a tear and suppressing our emotion is the least we can do to protect her... and maybe to protect ourselves as well," he added quietly. "Don’t lose your head... just yet."

Primo and Bear stared at each other, and the former could only breathe out heavily. Primo still wanted to argue, but how could he when Bear made a lot of sense? This was far from over.

"Who... is with her right now?" Primo asked after a moment. "If you and I are here, and Tiger is with his girl, who was waiting outside the surgery room? Dominic?"

"Dom went to the chapel."

"Hah!" Primo couldn’t help but laugh at the thought. "After everything, surely, he’s more shameless than I thought."

"Tiger is surely there."

Primo raised his brows. "Tiger? Wasn’t he with his girlfriend?"

"No," Bear slowly gazed down and swirled the glass mildly. "I’m sure he went back as soon as he got Miss Wei a doctor to check on her. He’s always like that."

Primo wanted to speak out about how he found that strange, but somehow, his voice was stuck in his throat. For a moment, neither of them spoke again. But when Primo was about to say something, the door suddenly flew open. Bear and Primo instinctively set their eyes on the door, only to see Wolf standing by it.

One look and both men could tell Wolf was bringing in bad news.

"We’ve already had enough bad news," Primo blurted out. "Whatever news you’re bringing, can you keep it to yourself for now?"

Wolf simply glanced at Primo and then set his eyes on Bear. "They got him," he announced under his breath. "They got... Joker."
