Chapter 965: What a day
[Sorrento]
Alfred stood in the long driveway of the mansion, unfazed by the busy people cleaning up the bodies left in the house and taking some of their people home. He kept his gaze down, staring at the woman lying on the side of the driveway. Despite the darkness of the night, the lights all over the mansion were enough for him to see her.
"What a sadistic way to kill someone." Suddenly, a voice came from his side and the owner of the voice was standing beside him. He gazed at the person Alfred was staring at. "She has a good instinct for most things. So, I wonder what she was thinking before she died, knowing where the bullet would go."
Romnick, the other person, stared at the body beside the driveway.
Katherine’s blonde hair was covered with dry blood. Her olive eyes were left open, and even when Alfred tried to close them, they wouldn’t shut. There were two holes in her face; one in the middle of her face, and the other one in her forehead.
"She could’ve died with that shot in the forehead," Romnick continued. "But it seemed the person who did this shot her in the face first, before the head. Is this a warning?"
Alfred still didn’t respond, eyes fixed on Katherine’s mutilated face.
"A warning that all of us will share such an ugly way to die?" Romnick guessed as that was the only reason he could think of. "If so, what a way to—"
"Dominic Zhu."
Romnick raised his brows as he slowly twisted his head in Alfred’s direction. The latter still kept his eyes on Katherine’s mutilated face, his jaw tightening as he clenched his teeth.
"It was Dominic Zhu who did this," Alfred clarified under his breath. "That same Dominic Zhu our boss worked for years."
"Oh..." Romnick rocked his head in understanding, snapping his eyes to the body. "He’s also here, huh? The boss hadn’t briefed me about what happened because he’s currently busy talking to the chief police and the president. If his talks with them go bad, we might have to clean up a few more bodies here."
Alfred drew a deep breath and then huffed it out quietly. "Where’s the old man?"
"Dead."
"Ah."
"Do you know who killed him?"
"Is it not Dragon?"
"Hah." Romnick chuckled, slipping his hands inside his pocket, and took out a pack of cigarettes. Clipping a stick in between his lips, he leisurely lit it up and drew a long drag. When he puffed out the smoke, he ran his tongue across his inner cheek as he recalled his day.
"I’m not sure," he answered after a minute. "But from what I heard, it was Alexander Cafre."
"Haha." Upon hearing Romnick’s answer, Alfred couldn’t help but laugh. "What a silly outcome."
"Indeed." Romnick nodded. "I also found it ridiculous when you told me it was Dominic Zhu who killed her. The people we were expecting to fight or do us more damage didn’t do much. While the people we never considered during the planning took the lives of those who were close to us."
He took another drag, snapping his eyes down to Katherine. "I guess even Dragon was just as surprised as us."
"Hm?" Alfred furrowed his brows, casting Romnick another look.
"He wasn’t in a very good state, either. To be fair, we just lost the old man and Katherine and a few people. But Dragon... if I’m correct, he’s heavily injured after jumping out of that sedan with that woman," Romnick explained, keeping it short and simple, despite knowing that a short explanation was not enough.
But what could he do?
Everything happened so fast on his end that none was fast enough to catch where the chase was heading. But what Romnick was sure of was that he saw Hera, Heaven, and Dragon lying unconscious on the ground. They just didn’t turn back because they were planning to retreat and didn’t want to risk it, especially when Fig and Primo reached Heaven’s body almost immediately.
If Romnick changed his mind and went back, there was no telling if he was able to come back in one piece.
"Did you already report that?" Alfred asked out of plain curiosity.
"Not yet." Romnick cocked his head back, enjoying the cigarette. "Dimitri is still busy at the moment. I mean, it can wait. After all, I don’t think Dragon or the other party has the time to prepare for their next move, considering the state of their boss."
Alfred slowly peeled his gaze from Romnick, setting them on Katherine once again. He slowly got on his knee, slipping his brawny arms under her body and carrying her in his arms.
"Where are you taking her?" asked Romnick curiously.
"Inside. Are you just planning to let her body lie around here?" Alfred replied. "Katherine is still a part of the family. You might not understand that since you see us as mere work colleagues, but she’s more than that for me."
His tough face hardened, holding Romnick’s gaze sternly. "If what you’re saying is true, then I believe we have plenty of time. Katherine deserves a funeral."
With that being said, Alfred turned around to leave while Romnick stayed in his spot.
"Katherine... doesn’t deserve a funeral, Alfred," Romnick spoke, stopping Alfred from walking away. "Do you think if it was you, she would feel just as sentimental as you?"
Alfred slowly gazed down at the cold body in his arms. His lips parted, but his words didn’t come out of his throat. Instead, he resumed his steps until he suddenly halted on the seventh step.
"Dominic Zhu," Alfred remarked, glancing over his shoulder. "He’s mine."
Romnick shrugged, watching Alfred resume his steps. As he stared at the man’s back, he couldn’t help but shake his head as he took another long drag of the cigarette. Cocking his head back, he puffed out the smoke in the air, staring at the full moon shining brightly in the night sky.
"What a day."
