Chapter 953: Come back, alright?
Dragon’s plans for independence weren’t a whim he thought about just recently. Just like when he betrayed the reapers and stabbed Hera in the back, he got it all planned for a long time. Before he attacked Dane and showed his fangs to his partner, Dragon secretly colluded with other powerful forces in the underground. He traded with them, eventually leading to partnerships and alliances to back each other up.
Hearing Joker’s answer to her question, Heaven didn’t need further details about who suddenly came to Dragon’s rescue.
It was truly bad news.
"Shit!" Joker cursed through his gritted teeth, looking back from his seat in panic. "I think someone is here! I’m going to pack up!"
Joker didn’t wait for Heaven’s response to start packing his things. He only grabbed any valuables, closing his laptop and other things as quickly as possible. Heaven, on the other hand, went quiet as she focused on maneuvering the escort car.
"You should get back to the other car!" Joker remarked. "I can still control it, but I’m in a hurry!"
Heaven snapped her eyes at the rearview mirror and then at the side mirror, where she could see Fig’s vehicle beside the other car behind.
"How did they find you?" she wondered but didn’t dwell on it.
Dragon already gave out an order to find Joker’s whereabouts before this. Considering the type of people Dragon could’ve asked for help, it shouldn’t be surprising they would find the elusive Joker. Some of Dragon’s alliances were capable people, after all. It was the very reason Dragon was confident in cutting off Dane and sacrificing whatever benefits he was getting from his old partner.
"He improved all these years." Heaven propped her elbow against the window while resting her temple on her knuckles, not worried about Joker’s well-being. Running and hiding was Joker’s forte. Therefore, she knew he would be fine. "He used to be smart and calculating, and he still is — even better."
It wasn’t like Heaven didn’t expect any reinforcements from Dragon’s alliances. What surprised her was they were all here to help Dragon out. Not to mention the number of people in the mansion was far too small to consider those were all the people under Dragon’s wing.
His syndicate had become so massive over the past few years.
"Hmm..." Heaven hummed, tapping her fingertips against the steering wheel, deep in thought. Her eyes were fixed on the car ahead of her, counting the numbers on their side.
Tiger, Moose, Bear, and Ram and his forces were in another part of the country. Asking them for assistance was impossible as they were now busy with Dane and his forces. On her side were Fig, Primo, Wolf, and a few other people under Wolf’s command.
Counting on the people on her side right now, their numbers wouldn’t even reach twenty. Some of them were injured after assisting in infiltrating Dragon’s base. Even without considering that part, their number was too low to face Dragon’s allies.
"Moreover, I feel bad if I push Wolf’s people to face everyone alongside us. There are barely enough good people in this world. The civilians would be disappointed if several good people would die here today," she murmured, taking her precious time to consider her options. Though the situation needed immediate action, she would rather weigh her options instead of making a mistake in the process.
"Are you okay?" Heaven pressed her earpiece again. "Or you’re dead now?"
"Don’t jinx it!" Joker yelled while panting for air. "I’m alive!"
"Can you do me a favor?"
"Again?!"
"Do it while running."
"Tch!" Joker could only click his tongue, running for his life while opening a smaller, hand-size device that looked like a mini laptop. "My life is really cruel. Even in a situation like this, I have to work!"
"Why does that always surprise you? This is our line of work."
"I should’ve applied to the Lyon Group. I would be the head IT and enjoy my life as a corporate slave."
"If that’s what you want, I’d put a good word to my brother-in-law. Even if there’s no job opening, he can create a position just for you."
"What favor do you want?" Joker asked, ignoring her remark for a more sensible discussion.
"Connect me to everyone."
"Got it!" He held the device with both his hands, running while typing with his thumb on his little keyboard. "Is that all?"
"And can you find a way for me to talk to those guys??"
"Who?"
"Those in the front."
"Ah..." Joker furrowed his brows, glancing ahead of the hotel corridor to see a fire exit. "It will take time. I’m running and I’m just using an extension device to keep the progress I’ve made throughout the operation."
"If you can’t, then that’s fine." Heaven drew a deep breath. "I’ll think of another way, though that would be even more unconventional."
"Once I find a place to hide, I’ll get back to you. I’m on my way to the rooftop. Wolf sent someone to pick me up a little while ago."
"Mhm." Heaven hummed a soft tune. "Take care."
This time, Joker didn’t respond and all she could hear was silence. Hera remained quiet for a good minute before pressing a finger on her earpiece again.
"Can you hear me?" she spoke, wondering if anyone would respond.
"I’m here." After a few seconds, Wolf’s voice was heard.
Heaven immediately arched a brow as soon as she heard his tone. "Are you okay?"
"I’m fine, a little," Wolf grunted, holding on to his bleeding shoulder. "They got me. I was shot in the shoulder."
"How?"
"On our way to the base, someone tried to shoot us down. We managed to escape, but I got shot," he explained, putting it plain and simple. "Leo is fine, though. He’s still unconscious. We’re almost in the base."
"Don’t land."
Wolf furrowed his brows, and without asking her a question, he turned to the cockpit. "Don’t land!" he yelled, making the pilot veer off from landing.
"Take Leo to your base. Your base." Heaven ordered. "And get treated."
"What?"
"I think the base is already found."
"What? How?!" Wolf shook his head as if that didn’t matter right now. It could be they followed him as they couldn’t really hide the helicopter if someone was chasing after them. "How about you? Will you be fine? We lack manpower. If I go, then that’s a lot of minus in our forces."
"That’s fine."
"Hera —"
"Wolf," Heaven called solemnly, fluttering her eyelashes ever so slowly. "We don’t lack manpower. I alone is enough for this operation."
Wolf clenched his teeth but was unable to argue with that. She had a point. Just Heaven alone could count as a hundred or two hundred elite soldiers alone.
"Don’t think about anything and just go," she continued quietly but clearly. "But once you’re fine, check on Joker. I think Dragon’s people somehow found him."
"Joker?" Wolf arched a brow and then nodded. "That I can do now. I’m on it."
"Thanks."
"Hera." He drew a deep breath and sighed. "This side of you still makes me angry at times, but... take care."
Heaven didn’t respond despite knowing the level of sincerity in Wolf’s remarks. "Mhm. I will."
"Come back, alright?"
"I will." A short smile turned up on her face. "Don’t worry. I don’t plan on dying, knowing my children are waiting for me to pick them up from their grandparent’s home."
