Chapter 937: The real goal of the mission
[Minutes ago]
"I’m out of here."
Moose had no leisure to reload and shower his enemies with more bullets, and thus, he immediately made a turn to make a run for it. As he did so, he glanced at the side mirror to see if the enemies took the bait.
They did.
Everyone in the driveway, including the familiar Dane, rushed in the cars to chase after him. Even some of their enemies from the inside went out to follow him. And thus, Moose focused on the road to get them as far away as possible from the mansion.
Just as planned.
The mission was to save Ivy Wei. So, as much as possible, they didn’t want to engage in a true fight until she was fully rescued and in a safe place.
"What a strange thing to see," he muttered as she sped through the lonely road from the enemy mansion. "I used to see him following Dom like a tail, but now he’s commanding a bunch of rogues. Surely, people are the most surprising creatures in the world."
Moose shrugged, glancing at the side mirror to check if he was still being followed. Seeing his distance from the enemy, he deliberately slowed down. After all, he needs them to follow him and not lose him. As they did so, Moose glanced at the other street on the side. On the other end of the street was a black sedan parked on the side of the road.
"Can’t they find a better place to hide?" he wondered, shaking his head as he went down the other road. "I told them I’m going to use that road."
While Moose was contemplating the situation, he kept his pace and even dodged some bullets from behind him. Being on a chase was never a problem for him. It wasn’t the first time. Hence, it was a piece of cake. However, he couldn’t help but think that the road he was taking was heading to the city.
Dane’s syndicate mansion was situated in the town right outside the city. From the information they gathered, this syndicate controlled the entire town. In other words, even if Moose would drive around the town, all he would meet were enemies. But in the city?
"I already feel sorry for everyone who lives in this country," he muttered. "They already live in fear, knowing the place they live is controlled by a syndicate and now I’m going to cause a problem. Well, that can’t be helped, I guess."
There was nothing Moose could do if even the authorities were under the syndicate’s payroll. It wasn’t like this was a surprise. After being part of the underground, Moose had seen countries or cities being controlled by an organization.
With that thought in mind, Moose took the road heading to the city with a heavy heart. The outcome of their plan might’ve deviated a little from their expectations, but that happened all the time.
Meanwhile, in the SUV, Dane kept his gaze on the motorcycle ahead. Alfred had been quiet, keeping his focus on the road and catching Moose. Dane, on the other hand, had something else in mind. As soon as Dane saw the road where Moose was heading, he couldn’t help but wonder what Moose’s true intention was.
"These Reapers..." Alfred grumbled after a prolonged silence. "Did they think they could just do whatever they wanted in our territory? I’m going to wipe them all out."
Dane fluttered his eyelashes, setting his eyes on Alfred. "Alfred, calm down."
"I’m trying to, boss." Alfred’s voice rumbled down his chest. "But from the other warehouse, our men told us most of them were wiped out. Some luckily got away."
"They were small warehouses." Dane leaned back, setting his attention to the windshield. "If Ram is the one leading it, then that is to be expected. Good thing we already withdrew some of the stocks and moved them to another place."
Another heavy sigh escaped Alfred, gripping the steering wheel tighter. Even though Dane had already made his move before he arrived at his house, he had already given out an order to transfer most of their stocks to a different location. Despite that, it was annoying that some old bastards were challenging them.
"That old folk..." Alfred clicked his tongue. "I’m unsure if I am more irritated at those guys’ incompetence for not being able to kill one old man, or at that old man’s audacity."
Dane raised a brow. "What do you mean by that?"
"Huh?"
"You said the old folk killed everyone?"
"Mhm. That’s what our men said," explained Alfred, summarizing the report he was listening to. "They said their enemy was an old man."
"Just one?"
Alfred twitched as his pride at the question was a little hurt. "Mhm. Just one," he answered through his gritted teeth.
After hearing the information Alfred had, Dane looked down with furrowed brows. An old man infiltrating their base all on his own? From what he knew, Ram wasn’t the type to march on an enemy’s base all on his own. That wasn’t his style. Ram might be a former member of the Reapers, but he was still the president of the country. He wouldn’t put himself in a frontline, not because he was scared, but because strategizing was his forte. Ram might go himself, but he would surely stay out of the chaos and simply watch it from the distance.
"An old man, huh?" Dane whispered before his pupils dilated. "Bernard."
Alfred cast his boss a side-eye. "Bernard?"
Dane set his eyes on the motorcycle a few meters ahead of them and his eyes sharpened. In the past, while he was still playing as Dominic’s assistant, Dane met this same scenario in the past. To make the story short, he had to deal with the authorities and keep an old man from getting behind bars because this old man raided a gang’s base all on his own.
Simply put, that old man massacred the gang.
Dane could still remember the gruesome scene after that incident. The similarity between that incident and this situation was eerily familiar. Dane refocused his eyes ahead and then on the side road. They just exited the town and were now on the wide highway of the city. When Dane set his eyes back on Moose, a glint flickered across his eyes.
"I was wrong," he said, almost in panic. "Go back."
"What?"
"I said go back!" Dane raised his voice, grinding his teeth angrily. "Damn it. I thought he was in Dragon’s place, but how can I forget he can shoot someone from a mile away?"
The fire in his eyes blazed as realization struck him. "They don’t plan on a full-scale war. Their real goal is Ivy Wei."
