Chapter 935: Old friends

Meanwhile...

"Sir, the house is clear."

A man in his fifties, but appeared younger with his neat haircut that blended the white strands of his hair to his black hair, glanced at the young man who came to report about the situation inside the house. He snapped his eyes at the house entrance, only to see a flimsy vine-covered gate.

The place was situated in a rural town in Sorrento — a perfect hiding place for a syndicate like Dimitri’s.

"Tell the guys to take all the valuables in it," ordered the old man as he cut the end of the cigar before clipping it between his teeth. "We’re sending it to the Interpol."

"Yes, President."

With that being said, the man jogged back inside the house they raided. Meanwhile, another man on standby approached the old man, lighting up his cigar systematically.

"They would be here any moment," said the old man after taking a long drag of the cigar. "I’m taking Dimitri with me."

"It’s a matter you should talk about with Wolf."

The old man addressed as president, turned to the other man, who replied to him. There, leaning against the rear of the Jeep, was his former colleague.

"You seemed relaxed as always, Bernard," said the old man, but Bear kept his eyes on the track where they came from. "Are you not afraid of Dimitri?"

"That young man still needs to drink a lot of milk to scare me. Your jokes were still as lame as ever, Ram."

Ram chuckled at his former colleague’s response. Meanwhile, Bear cast the other man around the same age as him a side-eye. Ram was idling beside the vehicle while lighting up a cigar.

Being with Ram wasn’t that of a long story, despite how elusive the man was in the last few years. Well, it was all thanks to Heaven that they successfully made contact with the elusive man.

"I’m just saying." Ram shrugged. "After taking down three of his bases, I’m surprised at how much wealth that boy accumulated. Considering he hadn’t been active for years, I was expecting his resources to dwindle. But from the looks of it, they even manage to manufacture meth all this time."

"This drug had been distributed and is quite in demand in Scam City," he continued. "No matter how many times I raided their warehouse, this drug kept popping out of nowhere in the city."

"Like I said, discuss this with Wolf," Bear replied sternly. "I am not interested in taking home that boy’s head as a trophy."

"I was hoping you’d help me deal with Wolf."

"That old fart is more hard to talk to now that he is older."

"That is why I am asking for your help."

"Don’t expect anything from me." Bear slowly looked away from the man as he drew a deep breath. "Before you think of what to do with the boy, you take him down first. As much as I hate to say this, Dimitri is smart. He’s also young and still has a lot of energy. Unlike us, who already reached this age without actually achieving anything other than the filthy blood in our hands."

Ram smiled subtly, sighing as he assessed Bear’s side profile. "Bernard, are you worried that Dimitri will kill us?"

"Death was never my worry."

"That’s right." Ram rocked his head, chuckling almost bitterly. "Only one thing worries you, and that is Hera."

He paused, leaning his back against the backseat’s door, taking another long drag before puffing the smoke in the air. "Which is why I was puzzled about why you hadn’t done anything to save Hera." Ram watched the thick smoke ascend in the air and disappear along with the wind.

"I kept telling myself you probably just didn’t know, but considering you had been in contact with Wolf, I’m pretty sure you’re aware she’s alive," he added quietly yet clearly. "Yet, you and Wolf didn’t do anything to either negotiate with Dragon or help her out of her situation."

Bear remained quiet, making Ram arch a brow as he glanced in his direction.

"Something is not right," said Ram. "You both know something that I don’t, huh?"

That was right, was what Bear wanted to respond. However, he believed he wasn’t in the place to tell Ram everything. Considering Ram knew an entirely different story and believed it, it was hard to make him believe the story Bear knew.

"I will not forgive you for attacking us not long ago," Bear remarked coldly. "Not only did you attack me with my innocent employer, but also attacked Alexander Cafre."

"Alexander Cafre deserved to die." Ram shrugged. "Or perhaps, he should be put behind bars. I knew he was behind bars, but much to my dismay, he was released a day before I sent someone to assassinate him."

Bear looked back at Ram. "Is that Dragon’s order?"

"No. It was a decision I made."

"And why is that?"

"Do I owe you an explanation?"

A moment of silence fell on their shoulders, keeping each other’s gazes on each other. After a few seconds, Bear looked away.

"Alexander is temporarily under our protection," Bear remarked monotonously. "Send more people in his way and take it as sending all those men to their demise."

"By temporary... I wonder how long will that protection last?" Ram asked out of plain curiosity, only to receive Bear’s quick glance.

’Until she said so,’ was what Bear wanted to say, but remained quiet. "Until he’s useful."

Ram blinked ever so slowly, his short smile still intact. "Bernard, who are you taking orders from?" he asked.

"No one."

"We’ve been friends for many years," Ram calmly argued. "If there is someone I know better in the Reapers, that would be you and Wolf. So, I know when you’re acting on your own or taking orders from another. Right now, I am certain it’s the latter."

Slowly, Ram raised a brow as the corner of his eyes creased. "I have a few guesses. It is either that bold Dominic Zhu or... his wife. Which one does hold the power in this operation, Bernard?"
