Chapter 931: The chase

A scream came out of Ivy as soon as she slammed the door closed, jumping to the side to hide behind the concrete wall. The second she jumped, bullets riddled the door. Gazing at it with wide eyes, her heart raced in her chest.

If she was a second slower or if she didn’t make a quick and critical decision, she could imagine her body lying in a pool of blood.

"She’s really going to kill me," she breathed out a jagged breath, turning her head ahead.

There, right outside the front door, were bodies lying lifeless in their pool of blood. It was almost horrifying to think these people had died minutes ago and people didn’t even do something about it. They didn’t even try saving them.

’Not important!’Ivy shook her head as she glanced at the door, nodding to herself when there was no more gunfire coming from inside. Taking advantage of whatever kept Katherine occupied, Ivy clenched her teeth and ran out of the porch.

No matter how disgusted or sick she felt, she went to the nearest corpse in the driveway. When she squatted down, she gagged and almost jumped away. The man still had his eyes opened while blood was trickling down from the hole between his brows.

"Oh, god..." she coughed, hands trembling as she pinched the rifle strap on his shoulder. "I’m sorry, I’m sorry, but I need it."

Ivy tried pulling the rifle strap with just her fingers, but since the weapon itself was underneath the corpse, it was impossible. She had to touch the corpse, pushing his side until he rolled and lay on his back. Another deep huff escaped her lips, almost closing her eyes as her trembling hands tried to untie the rifle from the man. As she did so, she would glance at the front door from time to time.

"Come on..." she panicked, barely controlling her trembling hands to finish the job immediately. "Why is it so tightly wrapped?"

Putting all her focus on undoing the straps to get the rifle, Ivy flinched when she heard the door being kicked open. She glanced at the door once and then hurriedly undid the strap.

"Ivy Wei!" Standing by the door was Katherine, holding a rifle down, eyes burning like crazy. The corner of her lips curled up, laughing as soon as she saw Ivy trying to loot a dead comrade. "Oh... this is going to be fun."

Katherine cocked her rifle up, aiming it at Ivy. Without further ado, she opened fire in her direction.

"Kyah!" Ivy squealed but was able to roll to the side with a rifle in her hand. She didn’t even think when she fired back, making Katherine run to the side. Even Ivy was surprised by her quick reaction, breath hitching, but no regrets.

"I’m not dying here!" Ivy yelled and as she jumped from her position, she opened fire once more. Katherine ran to the side while Ivy remained standing in the same place. When Katherine fired back in an attempt to get her, Ivy jumped several steps away.

’This is better,’thought Ivy, taking more steps back — jogging in reverse — while opening fire. ’I need to create more distance from her.’

Although in normal circumstances, Ivy was certain shooting Katherine should be a piece of cake. However, her target was a human being and her body was barely listening to her. Her hands were shaky and her breath was skipping. Even so, creating distance and pushing her enemy back was enough to buy her some more time.

When Katherine had no choice but to hide under the deck of the porch, Ivy was immediately prompted to run. But she ran with the thought that Katherine peeked her rifle over the railing, ready to fire back randomly.

BANG BANG BANG!

Ivy had her teeth clenched, as she could feel the bullets hit the ground near her. Thus, instead of going in a straight line, she ran in a zig-zag to have a better chance of getting out of this duel alive. Even when she wasn’t looking back, she slipped her rifle between her torso and arm, firing back randomly.

’Even if I shoot somebody, I don’t care,’ she yelled at herself. She’ll kill me, anyway. Whether I do anything or not.’

Earlier, her mind kept scolding her for putting herself in harm. But the more she interacted with Katherine and now with this situation, she realized Katherine would kill her, anyway. It was simply a matter of time. One would say Ivy simply justified her decision today, but deep in her heart, she knew she was correct. Katherine might not kill her today, but someday, she would.

There was no way Ivy would just sit idly by and wait for that day to come.

As Ivy ran through the driveway, she noticed that Katherine had stopped firing back. Curious, Ivy looked back and furrowed her brows.

Where did she go?’ she wondered to herself, slowing down in her tracks, which was probably a bad decision. Ivy kept her shaky eyes on the portico, still jogging, searching for Katherine’s traces. ’Did she give up?’

Ivy immediately shook her head, knowing Katherine seemed to be not the type. She looked ahead and picked up her pace.

’Whether she gave up or had another idea is not my problem,’ she told herself, gazing at the thick smoke and flames ahead. ’Why is this driveway so long?!’

This was the reason she chose to live in a luxury condominium building. After all, the Zhu Family’s residence also had a wide driveway. Though this one was longer, Ivy often thought it was a hassle to have such a grand driveway. Despite that, she kept her mind focused on her goal.

Once she stepped out of that burning gate, her chances of survival would jump high. Even though she didn’t know the area they were in and what to expect beyond the gates, she told herself she would figure it out. After all, she trusted that she was good in direction.

As Ivy focused on running, forgetting the large distance the mansion and the driveway had, she suddenly heard a motor noise from somewhere else. Turning her head, she caught a red motorbike revving up, driving through the green landscape from the side.

And the rider?

Katherine.

"Oh, uh." Ivy’s eyes went wide the moment she saw Katherine riding a motorcycle and speeding in the driveway’s direction.

Now, this was another big problem.
