Chapter 929: Negotiation to escape
When Ivy reached the lobby of the second floor, she stopped and listened to the symphony of sound downstairs. She carefully approached the railing, almost tiptoeing. She peeked over the railing, only to catch one man rushing out of the front door.
Ivy waited, waiting for another person who might come out, but no one came. After the last man left running out of the mansion, silence followed. Ivy held her breath as she gulped a mouthful. Her heart raced, almost leaping out of her ribcage. However, she mustered enough courage to make her way to the first floor.
On the stairs, Ivy peeked down to see anyone around. She even ducked down the railings in an attempt to hide herself. When she peeked out a little, she caught only one person in the lobby.
Katherine.
’She’s alone,’Ivy thought, a little hesitant to go use this route. However, where else would she go? It wasn’t like she had a tour of the mansion and could get around without getting lost. Remembering her first day in this place, it took her minutes to even find the mezzanine on the second floor. What more, another exit?
"You don’t have to hide," Katherine remarked while busily filing her long nails to make them appear sharper. "I already saw you."
Ivy’s brows rose upon hearing Katherine’s calm voice. She slowly rose from her position, eyes immediately landing on the couch where Katherine was perching. Katherine was sitting in the spot Dane had originally sat earlier; her legs were resting on the other and her attention was still on her nails, blowing them to get rid of some nail residue.
"If you’re planning to leave because everyone went out to party, then you better stop dreaming," Katherine continued with disinterest. "Do you think Dimitri will leave you unguarded?"
"Are you saying he left you to watch over me?" Ivy returned sarcastically. "Aren’t you angry about that? Sounds like a nanny to me."
Katherine fluttered her long fake lashes in her direction. "It’s annoying, but it’s the boss’ order."
"What if I say no?"
"Then you’d see." Katherine shrugged. "Don’t think because only a woman was left behind to guard the house, you can just do whatever you like. If anything, you should worry about what I would do to you if you give me a reason to."
Ivy clasped the railing, shifting her eyes to the coffee table in front of Katherine. The weapons Dane was cleaning earlier were still there, although some were missing. He probably just grabbed anything within his reach before going out with Alfred.
"I’m hungry!" Ivy announced, lifting her chin. "I’m going to eat."
Katherine arched a brow. "The food is in the kitchen."
"Did you cook it?"
"I did, but it’s not for you." Katherine looked at her with disinterest. "What? Are you expecting me to serve it to you?"
"I’d rather not. Where’s the one that the chef prepared?"
"Do I look like I am a servant who knows everything about what the workers here do?"
Ivy chuckled as she casually took down the stairs. "Maids are not the only ones who manage the manor. At least, in our country, the family’s matriarch knows every little thing that happens in the household."
"Oh?" Katherine raised a brow as she rocked her head in understanding. "How interesting."
"Was it?" Ivy jumped to the couch across from Katherine, trying her best not to give her any hint of what she was planning. "I thought that is a general law of most households. The wife always takes care of the household. I think they left you because you’re a woman and should stay in the house."
Katherine chuckled, eyes on Ivy. "Are you trying to annoy me? If so, it’s not happening. I’m not falling for it."
’Really, huh?’ Ivy smirked for a split second, catching a slight sign of annoyance from the woman.
"I want to deny that accusation, but I’m aware you didn’t like me the moment you saw me." Ivy shrugged. "Though I will still try. Believe me when I say I am not. I’m simply stating facts or, to be precise, what I know. Dimitri lived a double life for years, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he had grown accustomed to our traditions to fit in."
Katherine went quiet for a moment, a little swayed by the nonsense Ivy was spewing.
"Say, just what did you like about the guy?" Ivy inquired, not giving Katherine the chance to see through this diversion. "He’s... a psycho."
"Talk bad about him one more time, and I’ll cut your tongue."
"I’m not talking bad about him. All I’m stating is the truth from my perspective." Ivy shrugged. "In my eyes, he’s everything but good. He deceived me for many years, acting like somebody else when, in fact, he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I believe you’d prefer me to perceive him this way, because if not, my chances of seducing him are higher."
"Seduce him? You?" Katherine laughed out loud. "Oh, Miss Ivy Wei, it seemed you’ve become arrogant just because he let you off easily."
Ivy scoffed. "You don’t seem to believe that, Miss Katherine. You hated me without even getting to know me because you know for a fact Dimitri wants something from me. At this point, I know it’s neither money nor power. He doesn’t even need my connections. What else could a man who already had it all want from a woman such as myself except my body?"
The smile on Katherine’s face faded, replaced by a thick layer of frost. Meanwhile, Ivy’s smirk stretched as her eyelids drooped.
"Did I hit a nerve, Miss Katherine?" Ivy asked, taunting. "You don’t look so good. I wonder, why?"
"You should shut up," Katherine warned. "Dimitri left me behind to guard you, but it was so easy to tell him someone intruded and killed you."
Ivy’s face cracked, believing Katherine’s claims as not empty claims. A woman like her could kill her and blame it on someone else. They were the worst of the worst; the scummiest kind. A group of monsters. It was foolish to believe anyone in this group had a little bit of a trace of humanity.
"I’m not trying to make an enemy of you." She smiled again, wiggling her brows knowingly. "You like Dimitri, but I don’t. He’s all yours for all I care. But with me in here, it’ll be hard to monopolize him."
"Are you saying you want me to let you go for my own gain?"
"It’s not a bad offer." Ivy shrugged. "So, what do you say?"
