Chapter 928: A golden opportunity

Meanwhile, Ivy kept herself hidden under the window when the rounds of gunfire started echoing in the air. When she saw the motorcycle rider speed through the driveway, she watched curiously. But when he took out a rifle and began firing in every direction, she ducked and hid for safety.

The rounds of gunfire lasted for about a minute or so. There was nothing she heard aside from that and she was too afraid to even peek, scared she might get shot. When the round of gunfire ended, she heard tires screeching and some yelling.

Ivy clasped her trembling hand, putting all her attention to the sound in case she had to make a run for it. It was her first time to be in this very dangerous situation, and from what she knew, it was only natural for this confrontation to be pushed inside the mansion. But when she heard the cars moving away, he looked up and gulped.

"They’re leaving?" she asked herself, gulping a mouthful as she nervously mustered the courage to peek.

Just a peek.

It wouldn’t hurt, right?

Her determination to know what was happening slowly overwhelmed her. Ivy slowly reached for the windowsill, pulling herself up carefully until she could see the driveway. Her eyes went a little wider, seeing that the motorcycle was driving away. Following him were multiple cars outside and some more people coming out of the driveway.

"Hah..." Ivy let a heavy breath, wobbling back to the floor as she patted her chest. She didn’t know if that sigh was out of relief or if it was something else. After all, she didn’t know the person behind the helmet.

"Is that person Dimitri’s enemy as well?" she wondered, shaking her head as to clear her thoughts. Ivy once again mustered the courage to look outside, catching more and more people running and cars coming from another direction of the mansion.

"Everyone is leaving?" she wondered, pressing her lips into a thin line. "I saw Alfred and Dimitri leave. So, of course, everyone would follow their boss."

Her eyes shone as an idea suddenly crossed her mind. If most of the people in here left, then that meant this place was unguarded.

’What made him think I’ll stay here when I know he’s not here?’

Ivy gulped the lump in her throat, staring at the shut door of the room. Tiger told her not to do something stupid. She could stay here and wait, but right now, anything could happen. Considering Dane had a ton of enemies, he might take her somewhere else if things didn’t go as planned. If that was the case, then she might not have to wait for another day for Tiger to rescue her. But rather, it might take him days or many months. Worse. Years.

Ivy couldn’t stand the idea.

She had never been a damsel in distress who was saved by a knight in shining armor. Even if she wanted to be in such a spot in the past, she learned the only person who would save her was herself. With that thought in mind, Ivy reached for the windowsill and pulled herself up. She glanced at the window once more, nodding at herself the soonest she caught more cars driving away from the mansion.

"I have to go," she whispered, twisting her neck to look at the door. "I have to try, at least."

When Ivy took a step, her entire body trembled. She felt chained, and her thoughts suddenly turned negative. Her heart felt heavy, dreading the consequences of her actions. Being caught escaping might be the end for her.

"I have to try." She took another step, and this time, it felt heavier. "I can’t cower now!"

Ivy punched her leg as she tried to take another step, but her feet wouldn’t listen to her. The overwhelming fear and uncertainty if she was doing the right thing was almost paralyzing her. Even so, she forced herself, dragging her body until she reached the door.

Holding on to the knob, Ivy closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her entire body and mind were screaming at her, telling her to stay in the same place. They were telling her not to put herself into more harm, and staying with her captor was the safest bet at the moment.

But her heart was screaming the complete opposite.

She got to go.

She couldn’t miss this chance.

This was probably her only opportunity to leave this place and to save herself.

"Even if he catches me, there’s no telling he won’t do anything despicable if I stay," she whispered to herself, reopening her eyes as she mustered enough justification and courage at her decision. "Just like the old times, I only got myself."

’He... it’s not that I don’t trust Tiger, but considering his sister was held captive, I can imagine the pain he had to endure,’she told herself, her mind becoming even clearer at the thought. ’I don’t want to burden him, nor do I want him to feel guilty for saving his sister before me.’

Tiger’s sister was his world. This might have left a bitter aftertaste in her mouth, but she could just imagine how hard it was for Tiger to choose. After all, if Ivy also had a family member whom she treasured deeply, she wouldn’t hesitate to save them before anyone else.

"Stop thinking for now." Ivy shook her head. "You might encounter problems on the way, and the most important right now is whether I can shoot a human being."

Ivy gulped for the umpteenth time, not having an answer at the moment. "I guess I will have to find out." She drew a deep breath and twisted the knob, opening the door, only to be welcomed by silence. She peeked her head out, looking from left to right.

She idled for a second, making sure no one was coming from all directions before she stepped out. As soon as she did, Ivy felt her worries blazed, but so was her determination.

"I can do it," she told herself and without wasting another second, she marched into the mezzanine of the second floor to find her chance to escape.
