Chapter 912: A syndicate full of hostages

"Ah, shit..." someone in the back, breathed out as his heart raced. They felt like they were under a spell, paralyzing them on the spot, eyes wide on the woman. All they could do was watch her lift the sword, spinning it to change how she held it, and then throw it in their direction.

They saw it coming. They saw everything in slow motion, yet none of them did anything to stop her. The next thing they knew, another of their comrade was on the ground with the sword plunged right into his throat.

The body landed on his back with a violent thud, looking at it with deep horror in their eyes. They held their breaths on instinct, knees wobbling, their subconscious mind screaming at them to run.

This was insane.

"Hey," the woman’s soft voice snapped them back to the current lapse. "Eyes here."

The first man in the group instinctively looked back at her. Much to his dismay, the woman was almost standing in front of him. He barely reacted at their close distance when she suddenly grabbed the rifle in his hands, pointing it under his chin and pulling the trigger unhesitatingly while he still held on to it.

And that was the signal the men tried to fight back. However, if she was in a distance earlier and they failed to kill her, this close distance proved their chances were at an all-time low. In a matter of minutes, a round of gunfire continuously echoed across the hallway until there was silence with only one person standing.

Heaven gazed down at the bloody scene on the floor, shifting her eyes to the end of the hallway. Some of them tried to run away when they realized there was no chance for them. But alas, they already dropped to the floor before they could even go further.

"They used to be so fearless," she murmured with a sigh, shaking her head mildly. "But I guess Dragon was to blame for their change in demeanor."

Heaven sighed one more time before marching to the person who tried to run away. She had her sword plunged into the man’s back. When she was about to pull out the sword, she stopped and gazed at the person lying on his stomach.

"I see. So you’re still alive, huh?" she whispered, squatting down on the person’s side. "Should I kill you to end your suffering?"

The man breathed heavily, eyes shaking as he looked at the person squatting down beside him with her head tilted to the side. He reached out above him, grunting as he tried to crawl away. It was futile. Watching him was pathetic.

"This is not how I raised you guys," she commented, observing the man give his all into crawling away from her. "You all are once so brave and so fearless."

Back in the reapers, not only the underbosses were capable. Even those under them were feared, capable enough to handle missions all on their own without an underboss’s supervision. After all, every single member of the Reapers was trained extensively before becoming an official member of the organization. The process was even more strenuous than any military training.

It was the reason every single one of the Reapers was prideful. Though they never took pride in death, they would fight till their last breath. But now, this one former member of the Reapers was crawling away despite knowing it was futile. Twisted as it may sound, this wasn’t pride, but cowardly. If this was before, this man wouldn’t crawl away but rather try his best to hurt her — even if it was just a scratch.

"Now that I think about it, some of his people would willingly take a bullet for him," she muttered, rubbing her chin with her bloody hand. "That’s strange."

Snapping her eyes back to the person crawling on the floor, Heaven cocked her head to the side. Her mind was full of mystery. Just the brief fight between Dragon and that other man gave her an idea of the nature of Dragon and his people’s relationship.

"It was a selfish relationship," she thought, standing from her stance and walking toward the other man. "Though I can’t compare how I run things and how he runs his."

Heaven stopped, stepping on the man’s back to stop him. "If I were you, lay there and don’t move. The more you do, the faster you die."

The man tensed up as he froze. Much to his surprise, her foot wasn’t stepping on him that hard. If anything, she only placed her foot just to simply stop him.

"It’s pathetic, honestly," she continued nonchalantly, checking where the sword went. The blade was deep. After all, she threw it at him to kill him.

"If you’re lucky, you might survive if some of your comrades found you," she remarked as she removed her foot from him. "But if not, I hope you use this time to reflect on your actions and for taking the hand of that man who betrayed Hera Cruel."

With that being said, Heaven turned around to leave without taking the sword from his back. There was another one available and she could just use that. But just as she took two steps away, she slowly stopped upon hearing the man’s heavy yet short remarks.

"You... know... her...?"

Her brows rose. His voice was short and quiet, almost like he was using every once in his life just to utter those words. Heaven slowly looked back at the man, only to see him peeking down at her with determination in his eyes.

"Glad... That... way... not let... die..."

Heaven stared at the man’s paling complexion, and her jaw tightened. The man took a deep breath and forced the word, "please," before he took his last breath with this strange relief in his eyes.

She stood motionless on the spot, staring at the man blankly. Her fist slowly balled into a fist until they trembled.

"Dragon," she whispered as she marched back to the man, pulling out the sword from his back. A glint flickered across her eyes, having this realization in mind.

These men, who were once part of the Reapers, didn’t just mindlessly join Dragon. They just wouldn’t mindlessly jump in front of Dragon to shield him with their body. It wasn’t Dragon they were trying to protect, but Hera.

All of them — if not most of them — were nothing but victims. Hostages.

"That coward..." her voice rumbled down her chest as she trod through the hallway, eyes blazing on fire. "This syndicate isn’t just a group full of my former men, but a group full of hostages. Dragon, you just didn’t cross the line, but went further than that."
