Chapter 910: Good luck on that
Chapter 910: Good luck on that
"Mission one complete."
Tiger didn’t wait for any confirmation if he got the target because he knew he already did the job. He methodically tidied up, disassembling his sniper, and placed them inside a duffel bag. All he could hear from the earpiece was pure silence, but he didn’t feel the need to break the silence.
Once he finished, he carried the bag and jogged his way down the stairs. Once he reached the ground floor, he exited the building, going straight to the car parked outside. He first went to the trunk, throwing the bag in it before jogging his way into the front passenger seat.
The moment he got in, the person in the driver’s seat looked at him.
"Done?" Dominic asked, earning a look from Tiger.
When their eyes met with each other, a strange look turned up on Tiger’s face the longer he stared. Meanwhile, Dominic raised his brows.
"What?" Dominic asked once again. "Did I do something?"
"No." Tiger shook his head, his face contorting slightly. "This just feels strange."
"In what sense this is strange?"
"Brother-in-law, come on. Don’t act dumb. When we first met, our relationship was simply a boss and subordinate. Someone you pay for protection. And then, somehow, you became my brother-in-law," Tiger explained with slight difficulty, as if it was hard to put his feelings into words. "But now, look at us! We’re... partners."
"Oh." Dominic rocked his head in understanding before adjusting to his seat and shifting the gear so they could go to their next destination.
Originally, they were on their way to their original destination, but Heaven called. Thus, they made a stop so Tiger could help out the other team. Their team was separated into two teams. Those who went to Dragon to save Hera and Leo, and then their team to save Ivy.
Since Dominic took Dane’s scheme personally, he volunteered to be on this team. Not to mention, Ivy was his friend from childhood until the present. It was only natural for Dominic to be on this team. Heaven agreed and respected her husband’s decision, considering all the people who would be on his team as well. Having Tiger, Moose, and Bear with him gave her a sense of reassurance.
"I don’t see any problem with that, though." After another minute of silence, Dominic spoke his mind regarding Tiger’s concern.
Tiger scrunched up his nose and looked at him in dismay. "Is there a problem with your connection? Your response rate is slow."
"I’m just thinking about something else, so I momentarily forgot our initial conversation."
"Huh?" Tiger’s face contorted. "You momentarily forgot our conversation and then just remembered it?"
"Exactly."
"Dude, sometimes, you’re weird." Tiger shook his head, understanding that Dominic probably didn’t grasp what he meant previously. It wasn’t just the fact that Dominic was once his boss and that, technically, Tiger was still under Dominic’s paycheck.
What Tiger meant was entirely different. It was the fact they were on a dangerous mission together. Normally, it was Tiger’s job to secure Dominic’s safety. But right now, the lines were blurred.
Tiger snapped his eyes at the window, checking the side mirror out of habit.
"I wonder..." Tiger spoke again after a full minute of silence. "Why is she letting you on this mission?"
"Because Dane is my problem as well."
Tiger looked back at Dominic, only to see the man focused on the road. "Do you really know your wife?"
"I can confidently say I do, but at the same time, she’s still a mystery to me," Dominic answered honestly, eyes still on the road. "Regardless, I want to believe she trusts me enough to let me in this mission. It would hurt me if she didn’t let me join in."
"This is no game, brother-in-law."
"I never said it was."
"You might get hurt. Worse, die."
"I know."
"Even innocent people can be scary with a weapon in their hands."
"Mhm."
Tiger opened his mouth but then shut them again. For sure, Heaven already told Dominic the consequences. Knowing her, she probably tried her best to talk her husband out of this. But considering Dominic was here with him, she probably bent for him.
It was strange. At least, for Tiger, it was strange.
There was no way Heaven would just bend like that. If she was truly against the idea of her husband putting himself in danger, she would’ve locked him up or maybe knocked him out. Though the latter was impossible since she wouldn’t hurt even a strand of his hair, it was still strange.
"You can call it to preserve my pride as a man and to make peace with the fact that I was fooled time and time again." After another long silence, Dominic sensed the strange look coming from the front passenger seat. "I trusted Dane with my life... just like how I trusted my late uncle with all my heart. Just think that the person you trust the most turns out to be someone entirely different from the one you know."
"Dane knew many things and by that, it means things that even you didn’t know," Dominic continued in the same solemn and calm tone. "I know joining this party is dangerous, but I don’t think I can keep my sanity, nor could I ever trust anyone, including myself, to make a proper decision in the future if I don’t do something."
"That’s just one thing, but I also want to be someone who could protect my family," he added. "It hurts me as a man that my wife worries about me or puts herself on the frontline to protect me. I know Hera doesn’t think that way. She’s amazing in every sense of the word. But if I am more capable, if I am more reliable, as much as possible, I don’t want her to sully her hands anymore."
Dominic paused as he took a deep breath, thinking about his wife and all the stories she told him about her life as Hera Cruel. "If I make it out alive, then maybe I can get her to rely on me more."
Tiger could only stare at Dominic’s side profile, pressing his lips into a thin line. Silence hung in the air as he looked away, setting his eyes on the window.
"Good luck on that," he murmured with a little bit of worry shining behind his eyes. "I sincerely hope you can succeed in that."
Sensing the strange tone laced in Tiger’s voice, Dominic peeked at the front passenger seat. However, he didn’t press on the matter. And just like that, their journey went by quietly.
