Chapter 903: My heart will never be yours
"Thank you for everything. I really appreciate your help. Now I can leave with a smile on my face."
Hera stood motionless in her spot, watching Leo fearlessly taunt Dragon. Leo’s action not only rendered her speechless but everyone present. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say they even felt terrified for him. Dragon might be as calm as a still, but every single one of them knew exactly what he was capable of.
Some felt Leo was foolishly brave, but at the same time, they found him... outrageously amazing for being able to maintain his cool after that.
’Leo...’Hera called in her mind, staring at Leo’s back as the man walked away. ’You really are foolish... but I think I am more foolish than you.’
Her tensed shoulders relaxed as her face softened. Her tight fist loosened up slowly and the corner of her mouth curled up into a subtle smile.
’Miracle happens when you believe in it,’ she whispered to herself, turning to Dragon ever so slowly. ’He’s still alive. I can still see him. I’ve been praying all night for someone to save him, but I didn’t do anything aside from that.’
Looking at Dragon’s dark expression, Hera swallowed the tension in her throat. ’This might waste all his efforts to keep me away from the terrible repercussion, but... if I can save him, I would. Even if I get hurt in the process and even if I have to fall deeper into this inferno, I don’t mind.’
Dragon’s dark expression slowly changed as he heard a faint thud from his side. Shifting his gaze to where the sound came from, deep lines appeared between his brows when his eyes fell on the floor. There, Hera was kneeling.
"Hera," he called, confused with a tinge of annoyance. "What are you doing?"
Hera had her eyes down, holding her hands in her lap. ’I’m foolish; I’m weak and I regret being me. But if I can buy him more time, even if it’s just a minute or just a few seconds, I wanted to try.’
Meanwhile, Leo’s steps slowed down upon hearing Dragon’s voice behind him. When he looked back, his brows furrowed the moment he caught Hera kneeling. After a few seconds, Hera slowly raised her head, and they instantly locked gazes.
She smiled.
’Hera, you...’his thoughts trailed off as his heart thudded, sensing she would do something dangerous.
"I was lying," Hera confessed, keeping her eyes on Leo for a moment before shifting them to Dragon. "I know everything, Frank. Who I am, who you are, and our fake marriage. I know everything."
Dragon’s irises immediately went wide as his pupils constricted. "What did you say?"
"Don’t ask me when or how," she continued in the same quiet and clear voice. "I just know and sometimes, I wished I didn’t. Because if I don’t, maybe I wouldn’t be this miserable."
Her subtle smile cracked and her breathing turned a little ragged, but she maintained eye contact with Dragon.
"Well, I guess that doesn’t matter," she added lightly. Her expression slowly turned solemn as she clasped her lap, but then loosened her grip. "Dragon, let’s get married for real."
"Hera!" Leo yelled, about to walk back to her, when the person standing near him stepped in with a pistol in his hand. He gazed at the man, gulping at the muzzle aimed at his head.
"What... did you say?" Dragon’s expression turned blank, not blinking as he stared into her eyes. "Hera, did you just say you remembered everything?"
"I will give you what you want, Frank," she continued, ignoring the question he threw at her. "I will keep Ram in the palm of your hands and every single Reaper who joined the organization because of me. I will also give you all the remaining resources I had and help you take down the remaining core members of the Reapers. Even the list of the secret members of the Reapers I deployed all across the globe, I’ll give it to you."
The more Hera talked, the more relaxed she became. Her fear of getting caught by Dragon slowly disappeared, replaced with resolve and courage. She might be digging a deeper grave for herself and she might hurt some other innocent people in the process. However, right now, she doesn’t care about all of that.
She already knew what would happen even before she decided to snitch on herself. But just like what she said, she wouldn’t mind. Dragon already hurt her to an unimaginable degree; Hera’s memories haunted her and were eating her sanity away with every passing second.
"I had suffered enough, Frank," she confessed, and her voice cracked a bit. "I’m fed up and drained mentally, emotionally, and physically. You win. I concede."
Hera paused as she drew a deep breath. "Let’s not pretend anymore, let’s not hide anything, and let’s drop the pretense. I’ll give you everything you want from me, even myself. In exchange, let that innocent man go."
At this point, Dragon could only stare at her blankly. After hearing everything she had said, there was no mistaking it. He didn’t hear her wrong. Hera... knew everything. When or how did not matter.
"Hah..." After a few seconds of silence, a shallow laugh escaped Dragon. He held his temple, slipping his fingers through his hair. "Haha... hahaha!"
His shallow laughter slowly grew louder until he was almost hunching in. When he recovered, he set his eyes back to Hera.
"Hera, you... successfully deceived me all this time, only to expose yourself..." he sneered, confused about what he should feel at the moment. "Why? Because of that man?"
Dragon glanced at Leo, letting out another ridiculing scoff. "Impossible." He shook his head, seeing that more people held their guns at Leo to stop him from approaching them.
"Don’t tell me..." he ran his tongue across his inner cheek, setting his attention back to Hera. "... you actually fell for him?"
"Let’s get married, Frank. If you do, being with you will be my life’s mission." Ignoring all his blabbering, Hera maintained her composure. "That’s my offer. If you refuse, then kill me right here and now because no matter how many times you erase my memories or how bad you hurt me, my heart will never be yours."
