Chapter 899: Meaningful, albeit short.
"So, don’t cry because of me. I’m okay. I’m at peace, and I’m grateful to meet you in this life, Hera."
Dragon was right.
For someone who loved Hera and someone who had her best interest in mind, Leo would rather help her accept his departure. Just like Ram, who would follow his orders for Hera’s sake, Leo would do the same. This explains his confidence even when he knew Hera would go to Leo.
"No." Hera choked on her breathing, shaking her head in denial. "Leo, if it’s just for another day... I mean, I told you about that person who will rescue us, right? To tell you the truth, they’re a really capable and reliable bunch. We don’t have to wait that long — they could be on their way here! We just have to —"
"Hera." Leo leaned his face closer, stilling her head mildly. "I’m okay."
"No. This is not okay. You shouldn’t be okay with this. Don’t lie!"
A shallow breath slipped past Leo as he slowly released her cheeks, and then slowly pulled her into his embrace.
"I’m not lying," he said, patting her back mildly. "Of course, if there’s another way to avoid this, I’ll gladly take it. But I don’t want to hold on to that thread of hope."
His smile cracked as his fingers trembled. "If someone comes, then good. But praying for a miracle to happen until the last minute... will only break me if no miracle happens. So, I’m trying to be okay with it, even though I know I might not be able to see your face anymore, spend some time with you, or embrace you like this. I have to be okay with it."
"Accepting it just gives me more peace." His tone grew softer along with his eyes. "I just have to be thankful that despite what happened, I got to meet someone like you."
Tears lingered in the corner of his eyes, pulling his head back to look at her. He cupped her cheek once more, brushing her cheek with his thumb lovingly.
"It was cruelly brief, but I can say in confidence I’m glad to have met you," he whispered. "Don’t be too sad, hmm? And don’t be sorry for calling me that night." — if anything, he wanted to say sorry that she had to go through that torturous night.
"I lived a good life, Hera. It was... meaningful, albeit short." He pressed his lips while trying to maintain a reassuring smile. He nodded at her despite the heaviness that was weighing on his heart.
For her, for once.
He wanted to be a man with all the remaining pride he had left by accepting this cruel reality.
His eyes softened as another tear touched his thumb. Strangely enough, his smile this time was subtle but genuine.
"It’s really strange," he murmured, lifting his gaze to meet hers. "I feel like I’ve loved you for so long, even though it has only been months since the first time I met you."
A short whimper escaped her tightly shut lips, unable to stop her tears from streaming down her face. Looking at the resolve in his eyes and listening to his sentiments, how could she stop a man who had already accepted his fate? Doing so would only insult his sacrifice. After all, she believed Leo had thought long and hard about this.
"Why... are you so foolish?" she held his hand that was on her cheek, pressing her cheek in it. "How can you accept it just like that? How can you like someone like me in such a short time? Why... did you even like such a useless trash like me?"
Was it her karma?
In the past, she left him without a word. She didn’t give him the closure he deserved. Instead, she disappeared, knowing exactly that he would probably wait for her to explain where she went and why she disappeared.
Was this her karma for that?
Or was it because even after dying and waking up in this new body, she still held onto him like a leech? And he ended up in this situation.
"You could’ve been living your life differently." Hera bawled her eyes out as she wept quietly. She gripped his hand and pressed it on her cheek, closing her eyes as tears flooded her face. "You could’ve been smiling or maybe begging your management for a break. You could’ve been doing anything else or be anywhere else than being here."
Hera couldn’t stop herself from mumbling about all the things he could be doing if not for that stupid phone call. If she hadn’t fallen for Dragon’s trap, if only she was a lot wiser, and if only she utilized the original Hera’s skills, Leo wouldn’t be here.
He wouldn’t be here waiting for his death sentence.
At this point, she simply couldn’t help but reflect on her actions. Ever since the start, she kept blaming other people for what happened to her life. She blamed Dominic, Paula, even the innocent Sebastian, and the world. But none of them were at fault.
Unexpected twists in life happened, and it was something no one could control. It was just the way it had always been. However, they could always control themselves and how they reacted to things. It took her a while to realize that, and now, she regretted not being able to learn that early on.
If only she learned her lesson, Leo wouldn’t be in this mess.
"Stop crying," Leo whispered as he carefully pulled her into his embrace once more. He stroked her hair, tightening his embrace as if he simply wanted to keep her confined in his arms.
Meanwhile, Hera clasped his back and buried her face in his shoulder. "I’m sorry."
He glanced at her, but then smiled. He took a deep breath and stroked her back, lending her his shoulder to cry on.
’Maybe I’m sick or the level of craziness in this place rubbed off on me,’he thought, almost chuckling to himself. ’I am dying tomorrow, but I am not scared at all. If anything, I like the idea that right now, it feels like it’s just you and me.’
Leo pulled her closer and rested the side of his head against her. It was really strange; it was as if nothing was around them. It was just plain white or black with only the two of them in this tiny little world.
How peaceful.
