Chapter 898: Don’t cry because of me

"Leo! Open the door!" Hera banged the door while yelling for the person inside to open it. "I said open the door! Leo! Come out!"

When she excused herself from Dragon, she dragged her feet straight to the guest house. As expected, no one was there. So, she went straight to his room to talk to him. But alas, the door was locked and Leo wouldn’t talk to her.

"Leo, let’s talk!" she yelled as she continuously banged the door. "I heard that he’s sending you away! Leo! Do you know what that means?! You can’t go!"

Hera clenched her teeth as she desperately rattled the doorknob while pounding on the door. Much to her dismay, it wouldn’t open. Just a day ago, she told him she wouldn’t come in here anymore, nor would she see him again.

Just yesterday, she bid him farewell and said all those harsh words to him. But here she was, banging the door with all her might to see him.

"Come on!" she called through her gritted teeth, this time, kicking the door open. "Please! Open the door!"

Hera stopped when she figured she wouldn’t break this door down. She slowly placed her hands on the surface of the door, her knuckles bruised from all the knocking and banging. Tears streamed down her cheeks, biting her quivering lips, feeling her knees turn as soft as tofu.

"Please." Compared to the volume of her yells, her voice this time was barely above a whisper. "Don’t go. He will... he will... I won’t be able to take it if you die. I put you in this situation. If not for me, he wouldn’t even know your existence."

Hera closed her eyes, but her tears simply pooled underneath her eyelids. "I know it’s stupid and I know I said all those hurtful things yesterday, but... please... let’s talk."

She pleaded through her tears, knowing this might be the last chance she would ever get to see him. Or maybe, they could find a way to delay this. Help was already on its way. If only they could delay it for a day, he might have a different ending.

Little did she know, Leo could hear her muffled begging from the other side. Standing just a step from the door, Leo lowered his eyes to the gap under the door.

"I’m sorry..." from the other side, Hera continued to quietly speak through tears. "Give me a chance... I’ll fix this."

[If you die, I’m good as dead. So, please... don’t take that away from me.]

Suddenly, the words she spewed yesterday rang in his mind. He slowly balled his bandaged hand into a tight fist, teeth clenched, heartbroken.

’I understand why you said all those things yesterday,’he whispered in his heart, smiling bitterly. ’I understand why you want me to forget you and why you have to do it.’

"Leo... open the door... I’m sorry about yesterday. I’m sorry about everything. It was my fault, but please... talk to me."

"Hah..." A brief bitter laugh escaped him as he sighed. "I didn’t want to see her because it’ll only be hard. Why is she so cruel to me?"

Leo slowly reached for the doorknob, taking a deep breath as he mustered the courage to open the door. Slowly, the door creaked as he pulled it open, eyes falling on the woman slumped on the floor. At the same time, Hera gazed up to see him looking down at her.

"Leo," she called under her breath, watching him stand motionless for a moment.

"What are you doing there on the floor?" he asked, smiling subtly as he squatted down beside her. "Also, why do you keep apologizing? Didn’t we clear up everything about that part? And I even told you I don’t blame you anymore for it, didn’t I?"

His smile broadened, hiding his other emotions as if it would be the best for them. "Goodness," he sighed, cupping her cheek and wiping her tears with his thumb.

"I can’t protect you," he said lightly. "And now, I even make you cry. Just how much more pathetic can I be?"

"Leo," she called once more as if that were the only words she could force out at the moment. Her bottom lip trembling, biting it while tears formed at the corner of her eyes.

"You look like a child when you cry like that," he pointed out, still smiling. "And it breaks my heart to see you like this."

"Don’t go." Hera shook her head. "I’ll find a way to delay your departure."

Leo shook his head, making her panic.

"You can’t!" she clasped his clothes, eyes locked with his. "He will kill you, you know that. The place you’re going will be your grave. So, you have to —"

"Hera." Leo halted her sentence even before she could say more, smiling brightly, which wouldn’t appear in a person who was about to die. Or rather, to be killed. "I know what he plans to do. Unlike the lies we told you, Dragon and I maintained a level of transparency."

"He doesn’t need to lie about where he’s sending me and his reason behind it," he added and then exhaled sharply. "In other words, he won’t delay this departure, no matter what."

From what he knew, Dragon had to move and take down this hidden enemy. A moment’s delay was not ideal. Therefore, there was nothing they could do to stop this. His knowledge of Leo’s feelings for her was also a huge factor. So, begging Dragon or concocting a plan to delay it was futile.

"I accept it," Leo remarked, maintaining his gentle smile while Hera’s already pale complexion turned whiter. "I already accepted everything, Hera."

"What...?"

He drew another deep breath as he cupped both her cheeks, staring into her lovely face that was smeared with tears. "I told you back then that all my attempts were simply my ways to tell myself I did my best to survive. But I’ve already accepted that I might die at any moment." His smile faded a bit, yet it maintained its gentleness and warmth.

"So, don’t cry because of me. I’m okay. I’m at peace, and I’m grateful to meet you in this life, Hera."
