Chapter 897: What’s best for everyone

The next day...

"What?" Hera felt her entire body turn cold as if someone just splashed her with a bucket of ice-cold water. At the back of her mind, she was hoping she heard Dragon wrong.

Dragon, who was in the head seat, picked up the napkin as he explained.

"I’ve discussed it with Leo, and we both agreed it’s best for his recovery," His tone laced with nonchalance as he wiped his mouth. "Although he looks fine, Leo’s condition is far more complicated than it appears. So, he needs a more sophisticated treatment which unfortunately is unavailable in this country. That is why he needs to go abroad and receive treatment there."

Dragon placed the cloth on the table, fluttering his eyelashes back to her slowly. "He’s leaving tomorrow."

"Why..." Hera trailed off as she lowered her eyes, trying to process his announcement so early in the morning. "... so sudden?"

"It’s not sudden, Hera." Dragon leaned back, seeing her reaction as natural as she had been close to Leo. Therefore, he expected such a reaction from her. "We’ve already discussed this even before you met him. It was just that the specialist who could look after him was very busy at that time. So, he had to stay here and follow the instructions the specialist told us."

"I didn’t mention it to you because I think it wasn’t my place to do so," he continued without blinking. "I was simply hoping he would tell you about it, but seeing your reaction, I was wrong. In the end, he still made me break the news to you."

Hera slowly lifted her eyes to Dragon, opening and closing her mouth, but no words came out. All she could do was stare at those pair of apathetic eyes looking straight at her.

’No,’ she mentally whispered, hearing her heart sink the longer she stared at Dragon. ’How can you send someone to get treatment when they weren’t ill in the first place?’

She knew from the bottom of her heart, mind, and soul that Dragon was lying. Leo was not sick. He was paralyzed because of the poison they kept injecting into him. She knew their scheme and the script he made, which Leo followed.

’If he’s sending him away, that means...’

Her heart sank deeper and soon her already broken heart multiplied into countless pieces. He might’ve worded his news that way, but the literal translation of it was clear.

Dragon decided to end Leo.

There was only one ending when Dragon let go of people. Just like what he had done to Deborah and his trusted subordinate, Hunter, he would dispose of Leo.

’He would kill him.’

For a moment, Hera’s mind went blank. She subconsciously held her breath, barely blinking, her complexion turning pale. Yet, even when tears coated her eyes, no tears were able to succeed in escaping them.

’Since when... were you planning to kill him?’ she wondered, only to realize Dragon had no reason to keep Leo this long. ’No. What went wrong? Didn’t he need Leo to fool me more? To brainwash me? And to make me believe he’s this caring husband, who took care of my savior? Why is he going to kill him now? What happened? What did I do wrong? Did I make another mistake that I hadn’t realized? Where? When? How?’

Myriads of questions flooded her mind, wondering what led Dragon to make such an abrupt decision. She couldn’t understand — she wanted to understand. Perhaps she could buy some time for Leo. Fig told her they would come and get them. So, she believed just a few more days would be enough.

Seeing that blank look plastered on her face, Dragon sighed once again. ’She’s probably shocked. Considering Leo played with her for quite some time, his departure would surely devastate her. Now that reminds me of her gloomy mood when Deborah left.’

"Hera," Dragon called, leaning forward with a solemn look on his face. "I know Leo is a good friend, but because he is a good friend, he got all these injuries and complications."

He stretched out his hand to hold hers. "So, even if I know you’d be sad about his departure, I think it’s best if he receives this treatment. The doctor who will look after him is the best of the best, and he has been handling these types of cases all his life."

"What he had done for you is something I can never repay even with my life, but at least, I want to do something that he deserved." Dragon squeezed her hand to comfort her, not knowing she could see through all his lies. "This departure is for his own good. It’s the best for everyone."

Hera looked at Dragon blankly. But even with all the questions in her mind, her brain registered every bit of lie that was coming out of his mouth.

’Even until now... he’s using that stupid script of his to get out of this?’ she asked herself, almost laughing out loud. ’Hah... what did I expect? He’s crazy to the bone.’

"I think... I need to rest." Hera slowly retrieved her trembling hand from his grip, doing her best not to give away too much. She forced a smile but failed miserably. "I’ll go and rest first. My headache from last night is still bothering me."

"Is that so?" Dragon smiled subtly and then nodded. "Then, rest. I will go out today, but I’ll try to come home. I’ll tell the in–house doctor to check your health."

"It’s okay." Hera carefully stood up, almost staggering as her knees wobbled. "It’s just a mild headache, so it’ll be fine after some time of rest. You don’t have to bother."

She huffed heavily as she dragged her feet away from the table. Meanwhile, Dragon remained in his seat, following her figure with his eyes as she exited the dining area. The gentleness in his eyes the longer he stared at her trembling back vanished.

"Huh..." he murmured, crossing his arms under his chest. "She’s probably going to see him. How annoying."

The thought of stopping her from going to the guest house crossed his mind. However, he squashed down the idea, thinking Hera simply liked Leo on a familial level. Moreover, Leo wouldn’t tell her anything stupid for sure, knowing revealing Dragon’s secret would simply hurt her.

"He’s going to die, anyway." He shrugged nonchalantly. "Might as well let him comfort her so she wouldn’t make a fuss about it."
