Chapter 894: You’ll come to regret it.
After Heaven said her piece, she neither looked back nor did she stop from walking away. Meanwhile, Primo stood still with his slightly dilated eyes in the same direction she disappeared to.
[I’ve decided with those three poor and innocent souls in mind.]
[If there’s someone I feel sorry for, it’s them. They didn’t deserve what happened to them.]
[Though I must add that none of that was your fault, either. Neither that incident nor holding that old Garner’s hand.]
[It’s not pity. It’s more like I can relate.]
[We become someone we are not sure whether to loathe for its lack of meaning or be proud of it.]
Primo breathed out heavily without realizing he had been holding his breath. Heaven’s words replayed in his mind like a broken record, and as silly as it sounded, they touched a part of him that no one else succeeded. Before he knew it, a tear already rolled down his cheek.
"Those three poor children..." he whispered, ignoring the figure now standing several steps from his side. "No one else had ever felt sorry for them for not getting real justice."
In the past, when the news of his sibling’s massacre shook the nation, Primo heard all sorts of things from people he knew and didn’t. They expressed their condolences and some words of encouragement. Some would even whisper to one another and criticize him. Others pitied him. But none of them ever told him they felt sorry for what happened to the victim.
If anything, on top of the torment of losing them in such a manner, that incident and everyone focused on the fact that a lawyer lost his family from the monster he fought for years. Everything centered around Primo and Mr. John, overshadowing those three children who died that day.
No one truly understood the devastating pain he was in.
"Over time, I came to terms that no one will apologize. And I believed that even if someone will, it would mean nothing," Primo spoke again under his breath. "But I guess I was wrong. Even if an apology wouldn’t bring them back, nor will it erase that memory, it is still... not bad to hear it."
Wolf, who came when he caught Hera and Primo through the window, sighed. He leaned his back against the wall, arms crossed, eyes on the man he had been trying to put behind bars for years.
"It seems you’ve grown on her," said Wolf, snapping his eyes in the direction Heaven went to. "If not, she wouldn’t even bother telling you her mind just to quench your curiosity."
Primo slowly raised his brows, turning to Wolf. The latter still had his attention where Hera left, despite noticing Primo’s gaze.
"I don’t feel any sense of compassion toward you, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this." Slowly, Wolf set his eyes back to Primo. "Although late, I’m glad you two met."
Primo’s eyes slowly dilated, staring at Wolf in a slight daze as a subtle smile appeared on the latter’s face. What did that old sly fox say? A sense of confusion suddenly struck him at the unfamiliar relief that surged into his decaying heart.
"Well, I guess I worried for nothing!" Wolf smacked his lips as he peeled his back from the wall. "You should go back to your room. Although it’s hard to listen to your doctor, at least listen to the boss."
With that being said, Wolf turned around and reached for the knob. Just as he opened the door ajar, he halted at Primo’s remarks.
"Do you think... she’ll be able to save me?" Primo asked quietly but clearly, eyes on Wolf’s back. "I know it’s shameless to even think of desiring to be saved, but... do I have to hold on to it even for a short while?"
The corner of Wolf’s mouth curled up. "If I were you? Don’t even dare touch the idea." He cocked his head back and smiled at him.
"You’ll come to regret it, just like every single one of us," he said vaguely. "Save yourself the trouble, Alexander. I know you’re grateful for the chance she gave you — perhaps relieved. But leave it at that. Don’t go less or further and beyond."
Wolf offered a slight nod. "Though I know there’s a high chance, you might not heed my warning, do consider it. Trust me. If I were to turn back time, that’s what I would do."
After saying his piece, Wolf left Primo with a gigantic question in the latter’s head. Primo stared at the door going to the backyard, hearing a few fires from the people practicing target shooting.
"What does that even mean?" Primo wondered, furrowing his brows. "If he were to get back in time, he won’t even consider meeting or staying with her? Is that what he means?"
Even though it hadn’t been long since Primo joined this group for a mission, he already got a grasp of their relationships. It was strange no matter which angle he looked at it, but all of them seemed as though they knew Heaven Liu longer than they should.
Although it had been around six years since Hera’s fake death, it was still not enough time for them to be this loyal to Heaven. Considering their strong personalities, Primo expected they would take a lot of time to follow another person right after their boss’s ’death.’
"But then again, a part of me sort of understands," he whispered, shifting his eyes to where Heaven went earlier. "She’s... different."
Heaven might be more ruthless and cold-blooded if she wanted to be, but she had this knack for leadership. It was as if she was born for it. The faint warmth in her words uttered in such a strikingly cold tone, the contrasting look in her eyes as if they could strip any soul naked, and that back of hers that was so petite yet appeared to be the most sturdy and reliable than any he had seen.
"I now understand why... everyone is drawn to her."
