Chapter 893: It’s not pity
Fig didn’t idle around in the line and ended the call minutes later. Heaven, on the other hand, stayed in the room for a while, with her mind drifting elsewhere. When she came back to her senses, she pushed herself away from the couch and went out.Heaven first went to the backyard. This place was surrounded by acres of land, so even though rounds of bullets were fired, no one would come to check what was going on. Standing by the window where she could see the backyard, Heaven leaned her side against the jamb. She crossed her arms, eyes on her husband and Bear, who were practicing their marksmanship in preparation for their plans.
"He said he had been sparring with Bear in his free time, but it seems he was being humble," she murmured, observing Dominic’s stance and form while holding that type of weapon.
A subtle smile appeared on her face, which disappeared almost immediately.
"You really are shameless, Hera," she whispered to herself. "For being okay with this, but I guess there are some old habits I have to retain. After all, if I don’t let him spread his wings, people will just continue to deceive him and target him for no damn reason."
A faint look of sorrow and pity unraveled in her eyes while staring at her husband. Dominic acted as if it barely bothered him, but she knew him from inside and out. Dominic had been betrayed, lied to, and used by other people just because of who he was. And those people were also the same people he held close to his heart.
It started with Leon Zhu when Dominic was young and now in the present, Dane Zhang.
No one seemed to have noticed or had taken time to notice what her husband truly felt. Heaven was probably one of those, using this situation as an excuse to not fully delve into her husband’s feelings. An old habit of negligence, thinking it was not worth the trouble to dwell on something that had already happened if they could simply resolve it by preventing similar problems from arising in the future.
"This is no time for this," she whispered. "Once this is over, we can focus on our hearts."
Heaven closed her eyes and drew a deep breath. When she reopened them, she caught Wolf joining Bear and Dominic. Wolf seemed excited for some reason. Thinking those three would finish late, she turned on her heel to do something else than watch the three have a competition. But just as she turned, her brows rose at the person standing several feet from her.
"No One," she called, tilting her head a little to the side. "What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be in your room? And you’re alone at that. It seemed your doctor is quite neglectful of his patients."
"I begged him to let me watch those guys." Primo jerked his chin to the window behind her. "My injuries aren’t that bad. Mr. M is simply overreacting for wheeling me in a wheelchair when I am already fine."
"Moose isn’t overreacting. It’s simply much more convenient if you take as much rest as possible. I supposed you know the intention behind his actions."
"I know, but people recover differently. For you, it’s best to rest. But for me, I’ve rested enough and what I needed was to move around. That way, I can get used to the discomfort of these injuries."
"Fair point." Heaven nodded in understanding. "Very well, if that’s what will make you happy. Suit yourself. As for me, I have more pressing matters to do. Have fun watching them, but keep your distance. Wolf might accidentally shoot you."
With that being said, Heaven turned on her heel to the left. She marched toward the other exit, heading to a different part of the house. But before she could reach the exit, Primo spoke.
"Why did you give me this chance?" Primo slowly lifted his eyes from the floor, turning his head in her direction. The moment his eyes landed on her back, he balled his hands into a tight fist. "I know you already made it clear that you needed a decoy. And that you don’t care whether I die or not. But, after everything, I can’t help but wonder... why does this plan also favor me?"
Primo walked in the same spot, facing her squarely. "I don’t want to overanalyze it or get bothered by it, but there were other ways for you to use me without giving me some sort of... security. I don’t think you’re the type to forgive someone, especially if they attacked the people who are important to you."
"So..." he paused to catch his breath for a moment. "... why? I’ll be very insulted if the answer is pity."
Heaven didn’t look back at him as she answered coldly. "I’m glad you acknowledge that pity is the last thing you deserve." She glanced over her shoulder, her expression still the same.
"You are right. I am petty and I don’t forgive so easily. I hold grudges even over the smallest things. Revenge is something that is already rooted deep into my bones. So, considering you just didn’t attack my family once, but twice, forgiveness is off the table," she continued apathetically, sensing his intense gaze on her back. "You can think of my decision however you like, but I’m not doing this for you."
"If it’s not for me, then who was it for?" Primo took a step forward, unable to control himself by raising his voice. His next words, however, toned down. "Please. Tell me. Don’t punish me like this."
"Punishment, huh?" The side of her lips curled up. "What a tempting thing to do to someone like you."
Heaven slowly looked back at him, only to see the desperation in his eyes. "For those three."
"Huh?"
"I’ve decided with those three poor and innocent souls in mind," she clarified, looking away from him and resuming her steps slowly. "I don’t have any reason to forgive you, but I think you’re already being punished for what you had done. But those kids didn’t deserve the horror of that incident. So, I feel sorry for them. They never truly got the justice they deserve."
Hera suddenly stopped in her steps as she added, "Though I must add that none of that was your fault, either. Neither that incident nor holding that old Garner’s hand. If I were in your shoes, I would surely lose my mind as well as myself."
"It’s not pity." Heaven resumed her steps after giving him the answer he sought. "It’s more like I can relate. The crippling agony of losing someone important, the suffocating helplessness of not being able to do anything about it, and the tormenting cluelessness of our existence and purpose. So, in a futile attempt to not go through that again, we become someone we are not sure whether to loathe for its lack of meaning or be proud of it."
