Chapter 891: A mistake, you say?
"But now, I can read you like an open book and its content is quite... disappointing. You got too close, Mr. Wu."
Leo’s breath hitched at Dragon’s remarks. His entire body froze, eyes unblinking with his gaze on that demon. Because of his mixed emotions, he forgot to keep his act together. Dragon had keen eyes, and it was the very reason Leo had been given his best act so as not to get caught.
But in the end, he slipped up.
Dragon had no reason to lie to him. Leo probably made it so obvious. Having this realization in mind, Leo surprisingly felt calm. His tensed shoulders relaxed as a small yet genuine smile turned up on his face.
"You got me," Leo humored, chuckling. "You’re right, Dragon. I got too close."
Leo leaned back comfortably as he gazed at the plate across from him. "You seemed pretty calm, knowing someone else is harboring feelings for her."
"Hera is amazing in anything she does and in every way." Dragon shrugged. "Back then, countless men competed for her attention."
"And you’re one of them?" Leo cast him a quick look, and much to his surprise, Dragon nodded.
"I was one of them," Dragon admitted. "I can’t blame you for catching those feelings, regardless of the consequences. She’s like that, after all. Even if I was in your shoes, I would probably feel the same. She’s like a poison; a bad, rotten apple inside. Even if you know you shouldn’t desire it and even if there were countless warnings given, you just can’t help but take a bite. Hence, I can’t blame you."
"How understanding," Leo humored with a tinge of amusement. "So, are you going to kill me tonight?"
"No."
"No?" Leo repeated, almost laughing out loud. "Then when will you kill me?"
"It will come. Don’t rush it." Dragon reassured. "So? Why did she lie to me?"
"Why don’t you ask her?"
"Getting cheeky now because I’m not doing anything yet?" Dragon cocked his head to the side. "Or was it perhaps because you already gave up on life?"
Leo maintained his short smile, and he didn’t know why. For some odd reason, having this exchange with this devil didn’t scare him. It didn’t even intimidate him. If anything, he felt... fearless.
"You might not recall what I said, considering I am simply one of your pawns. But Dragon, I’ve always known you’re capable of killing me the first time we met," he expressed solemnly. "Everything I’ve done and doing is simply a futile attempt. Whatever I say or do, you’d kill me if it’s for your convenience."
"What’s the point of struggling?" he continued, shifting his attention to the chair where Hera sat earlier. "What’s the point of cowering and begging you on my knees? It only makes me less of a man."
"Do you feel like a man now that you’re talking back so fearlessly?"
"Definitely." Leo let out a short laugh, looking back at him with joy. "It somehow took the weight from my shoulders. It’s liberating."
"What an interesting thing to say." Dragon rocked his head, chuckling at the change of attitude this man had. "What a shame that I can’t keep you."
"You will never keep anyone, Dragon. Everyone will stay for a while, but they will eventually leave you. Even if you beg them on your knees."
"It’s best if you don’t push your luck so much."
Leo pressed his lips while smiling. "You know, when I proposed the idea, I knew that I’d get the upper hand if you accepted it."
"Oh?" Interested, Dragon arched a brow and smirked. "Since you accepted that you lost your mind, why not share that with me?"
"You might not know, since it didn’t seem you’ve ever been a hostage. Hostages tend to notice every detail — no matter how big or small," Leo explained, acknowledging Dragon’s remarks that he had lost his mind. "So, I immediately took notice of how you look at Hera. That look in your eyes... is so distinct, as it deviates from the usual look you carry around."
"That’s how I came up with the idea almost on the spot," he continued with a bit of pride in his voice. "I told myself, ’Ah, so even a man like him has a weakness,’and I was correct. Hera was your weakness. For you, accepting my proposal at that time was for your amusement. But for me, it was your mistake."
"A mistake, you say?"
Leo smirked. "You can’t get rid of me so easily now. Especially when she knows about me. A simple excuse like I left for something would raise questions in her mind. Knowing her, she would find it weird for me to go without saying a word. Considering her nature, she might snoop around. Who knows what she will find if she did so?"
"Haha." Dragon chuckled in response to this adorable threat coming from the man. "Mr. Wu, do you know how Hera lost her memories?"
"Huh?"
"I fried her brain," he answered without a second hesitation, making Leo’s face freeze. "That’s right. I fried her brain the first time she tried to escape. That was the night you received her phone call; while you were going through your night, she was screaming in pain all night. Obviously, the procedure didn’t kill her. But still, I could remember the scent of burnt flesh."
Dragon’s eyes drooped as a glint flickered in his eyes. "What makes you think the thought of her finding out the truth will scare me? I can always fry her brain and start again."
"You’re... sick," Leo blurted out in a whisper. "How can you say all of that without even blinking? Are you even human?"
"It’s a small price to pay to keep her by my side." Dragon shrugged. "Though it’s my last resort since the procedure is dangerous. She might die and I don’t want that."
Dragon continued to spill the sickening thoughts in his mind as if he didn’t see any problem with that. Meanwhile, Leo stared at the man blankly, his fist trembling in anger.
"Do you..." Leo’s face darkened as he sprung up from his seat, marched to Dragon, and without a second hesitation, grabbed his collar up. "... call this love?!"
"Huh?" Dragon glanced at the hand clasping his collar and then slowly gazed up. "Of course. It might not follow the norms, but I’m doing this for her."
"For her?" Leo laughed in ridicule. "No, Dragon. This is not for her. Everything you’ve done is all for you. None of this was for her!"
Dragon tilted his head to the side.
"How can you... hurt her and speak words of love so lightly at the same time?" Leo clenched his teeth, speaking through it. His grip trembled just like his lips, and his eyes burned with both fury and compassion.
This was what she had been going through.
This was what she had been enduring.
Leo never thought in his life he would have such an intense urge to punch someone. Or rather, beat someone to death. But alas, he knew even if he assaulted Dragon right now, it wouldn’t change her situation.
How pathetic.
