Chapter 890: Pathetic

[Guest House]

[I already lost a lot from the very start. I can’t lose another one in this lifetime.]

[If you die, I’m good as dead. So, please... don’t take that away from me.]

[Let’s escape here and forget each other. Forget everything and move forward. Not only for you but also for my sake.]

Leo slowly lifted his head, sitting in the dining. When Hera left, all he could remember was dragging his feet to the table and sitting there. He hadn’t realized he had been in this seat for hours if not for the growing darkness in the guest house.

"Hera Cruel..." he whispered, eyes on the plate she left on the table. "... had anyone told you that name doesn’t suit you at all?"

Leo arrived in this place against his will. He was held captive, paralyzed in the bed for a stupid reason. Ever since stepping foot in this place and having met the people in it, many questions lingered in his mind. It confused him, and there were countless times he felt scared, humiliated, and lost.

He never understood why this had happened to him. Matter of fact, he once told himself he didn’t deserve to be here. Yet, he couldn’t do anything. Thus, he decided to do everything to survive. If no one would come for him, then he had to save himself by learning a thing or two. Even if it meant playing with fire and deceiving the entire universe, Leo was prepared to go all the way for his own survival.

Never in his wildest imagination had he thought amidst all of this, he would fall for a woman. The same woman he planned to use for his survival. But he did... without realizing it.

"I’m so pathetic," he whispered, holding his head as he laughed within. "In the end, I am still relying on her."

He slowly released his head, eyes softening as his gaze fell on her untouched food again.

"It feels like deja vu," he mocked quietly, recalling his first love and first heartbreak.

When Heaven Liu suddenly disappeared on him, Leo couldn’t remember making an effort to find her. He just waited and waited, and when she appeared in front of him again, he still didn’t do anything. He told himself he had to take it slow, to let things flow naturally, only to be slapped by the truth.

She married and had changed into an entirely different person. But that wasn’t even the worst because the man she married was someone Leo wouldn’t even compare to. When he learned Heaven and Dominic were married and had a son together, he couldn’t even pluck out the courage to face Dominic head-on, knowing her husband would just crush him without lifting a finger. That was why, when Paula told him this ridiculous narrative, he believed it.

No matter how he denied it, he believed it because he was a coward. He believed it because it justified his lack of effort at not looking for her, for letting her go so easily, and boosted his morale. He believed something so silly because it made him feel better. In the back of his head, he thought at least, he had a clear conscience.

’It’s like that all over again,’ he whispered in his mind.

Just like Dominic, Hera had Dragon. But compared to Dominic, Dragon was pure evil. His mere existence terrified him.

The sense of powerlessness and helplessness seeped deep into his bone, crippling him in this chair. Compared to the heartache Heaven brought him, this felt way worse. Twice or maybe three times more painful. Weird that he felt less hurt by the woman he loved for years than the one he just met not long ago.

"I thought you escaped."

Amid the silence, an unexpected voice pierced the thick quietness in the air. Dragon marched inside the dining area, dragging the head seat, and sat down on it leisurely.

"How strange," Dragon mused calmly. "I’ve always known the guest house was quite eerie, but today, the atmosphere feels different. How do I put it? The air feels... heavy."

Leo slowly turned to look at the uninvited visitor. "Why are you here?"

"Do I have any reason to be on my own property?" Dragon arched a brow, arms crossed, and his leg resting over the other.

Leo pressed his lips, assessing the man not far away from him. The air Dragon exuded was like that air of confidence Dominic had. But instead of the noble in the mix just like Dominic’s, Dragon’s aura gave off this sense of dread to his spine.

"I don’t have anything to report," Leo spoke under his breath after a moment. "Hera is still the same, though she mentioned her anxiety about her uncle to me."

"I didn’t come because I want to learn anything about her."

"Is that so?" Leo nodded in understanding.

"Wouldn’t you ask me my reason for this visit?"

"You’d tell me if you want to tell me," he replied with a tinge of nonchalance. "If I remember correctly, you once told me to only speak when asked."

"And now I’m asking." Dragon raised his brows as he lowered his head a little. "Why did you cross the line?"

Deep lines appeared between Leo’s brows at Dragon’s question. "I didn’t cross any line," he blurted out.

"You know exactly what line I’m referring to, Mr. Wu. Earlier today, Hera’s eyes were a little swollen. I wouldn’t dwell on it that much, if not for the fact she lied to me," Dragon explained calmly. "She said she came from the inner garden, but I already went there and she wasn’t there."

He leaned back as he paused. "If she only said she was in the guesthouse, I wouldn’t mind. But she lied, and it bothered me."

"Hah..." Leo let out a short, airy, and quiet laugh. "You think something is going on between us?"

"Was there not?"

"No." Leo bore a cold look, clasping his hand tighter. "Nothing’s happening between us."

Dragon tilted his head to the side, assessing the look on Leo’s face. "Strange," he muttered. "When you made that proposal to me, no matter how I looked, I couldn’t read you. It’s the main reason I agreed to it. I thought, what an amusing man. Perhaps he can be an asset in the future."

"But now..." Dragon trailed off as he narrowed his eyes. "I can read you like an open book and its content is quite... disappointing. You got too close, Mr. Wu."
