Chapter 889: Not destined in this lifetime

"I can’t lose another one in this lifetime. If you die, I’m good as dead. So, please... don’t take that away from me. Let’s escape here and forget each other. Forget everything and move forward. Not only for you, but also for my sake."

Not only for him but for her sake as well?

What a suffocating statement.

Leo held her gaze while watching his breaths just because breathing didn’t feel as natural as it was supposed to be. He reluctantly released her hand, gazing down at the floor with mixed and overwhelming emotions swelling in his chest. Hera, on the other hand, wiped the single tear off her cheek and turned around.

Her lips quivered, and more tears were tempting to stream down her cheeks. However, she took a deep breath and huffed it, walking away from him. But before she could move farther, she heard him speak.

"Earlier, you asked me if I fell in love with you." His voice was quiet, almost just above a whisper, but it was clear. "I was uncertain until now."

Leo smiled bitterly, clasping his chest tightly. "If I didn’t, it wouldn’t hurt, correct? But right now, I feel like my heart was set on fire and is falling apart. It hurts, but if stepping out of your way is the only way for you to live, then I will."

"Pathetic, aren’t I?" he added in faint mockery. "Falling in love amid all this chaos."

Hera bit her bottom lips and balled her hands even tighter. A big part of her heart wanted to turn around and jump into his embrace, throw away everything, and find refuge in his arms. But the other part of her forced her to take another step while listening to her heart-shattering.

Perhaps they really weren’t meant to be in this lifetime. Be it Heaven Liu or Hera Cruel, how could she not be with the man she loved in both lives? She must have done something so unforgivable in her past life that she had to pay until now.

’I did the right thing,’ she told herself as she made her way to the living area where the entrance was. Some tears rolled down her cheeks, wiping it with the back of her hand. ’It hurts... but this is better than dying in the hands of that monster.’

No one would ever know just how heavy each of her steps was as she walked away from Leo. But that was fine. Sacrificing her happiness and selfishness for that one person was worth it. If Leo was able to get over her the first time, he would surely succeed the second time.

Hera repeated those facts in her head, stopping in front of the main door. A bitter smile turned up on her face, allowing her tears to fall before leaving the guest house.

"I did the right thing," she whispered, nodding at herself convincingly. "I made a mistake in letting him in my heart again, and I’m now correcting that. Let him go, Heaven. Just like how you shamelessly and thoughtlessly did back then, let him go."

Hera buried her face in her palms, muffling her cries no matter how devastated her heart was at the moment. Once she got out of there, crying was not an option anymore. This sacrifice was a small price to save him and her.

’It’s okay,’she cajoled mentally, taking another deep breath as she lifted her chin. She reached for the knob and forced a smile. ’It’s okay. We’ll be okay. Soon, he’ll forget about me and he won’t hurt anymore.’

Hera nodded once more, repeating those thoughts until she convinced herself. After another minute, she breathed out and smiled before opening the door, stepping out of the guest house without any thoughts of visiting him again.

Strange as it sounded, she never thought she would ever want to remember anything in this place. But somehow, this little guest house left a meaningful place in her heart. Though this place was smaller than the main residence, it held a warmth that comforted her from the coldness of the mansion.

The happy and calm moments with him only the walls of this place witnessed, those seemingly light conversations they had, the shared laughter, and everything. Hera had left all of those memories behind the second her foot crossed the threshold.

’Holding on to you will only hurt you... us even more,’she whispered in her heart, not looking back even if she wanted to. ’So, let’s not hold on to each other, Leo. I love you, but this is goodbye.’

Hera stopped several steps away from the entrance of the guesthouse. Lifting her eyes, she set them on the mansion not far away. Her lips were drawn into a thin line, smacking them as she resumed her steps. Since she didn’t know when would the original Hera save them, she had to focus on Dragon and get every bit of information she could get from him.

This time, she had to make sure to be useful and keep their chances of escaping at an all-time high.

"Hera?"

As Hera was about to enter the manor from the garden, she heard a voice from the side. Turning her head, her lips curled up, and skipped her steps toward Dragon.

"Frank!" she called excitedly, jumping into his embrace.

Dragon leaned back a little, and his hand instinctively rested on her back. His brows rose as he gazed down at her, watching her pull her head back with her lips stretched from ear to ear.

"I thought you left?" she asked. "Did you just come back?"

Dragon fluttered his eyelashes slightly, lifting his hand to cup her cheek. He slowly stretched his finger and stopped when his fingertip touched the corner of her eyes.

"Did you cry?" he asked, watching her eyebrows rise.

"No."

"Your eyelashes are still wet."

"Ahh..." Hera chuckled playfully as she took a step back. "It’s a little windy today, and something got stuck in my eyes while I was in the garden."

"Is that so?" he hummed in understanding. "So, you’re from the garden?"

She nodded and smiled. "Mhm!"

"I see." Dragon smiled subtly and nodded once again.

"So, did you just arrive? Did you eat lunch?" she asked, diverting the topic. "Or are you busy at the moment?"

Hera slowly glanced at the person standing two steps behind Dragon. Her eyes shone with curiosity, only to look back at Dragon when he spoke.

"I’m not busy, let’s eat lunch together." He held her hand and smiled.

Seeing his reaction, Hera smiled back and happily dragged him back to the residence. Meanwhile, Dragon stared at her back before looking away, setting his attention to the guest house where he saw her exit.
