Chapter 879: I bet he did

Primo eventually loses his sense of identity after stealing people’s identities and becoming a wicked villain. The more people he victimized, the more he went further from Alexander Cafre’s miserable and pathetic life. Ultimately, he thought he had forgotten everything Alexander Cafre carried.

Stealing people’s identities and not caring about the world around him "healed" him. Or rather, it made him survive the dangers lurking in his mind. Crazy as it sounded, but losing his own identity saved him.

Despite that, even though he forced his mind to forget everything about Alexander Cafre or Greg Garner, there was a name he would never forget even if he became No One.

Dimitri.

[PRESENT TIME]

"Hah..." Primo let out a shallow laugh, earning Tiger’s arch brow. "I don’t know what to feel about this."

Tiger stared at the man quietly. Just now, Primo started mumbling to himself while he was ranting about Dane. It annoyed him in the beginning, but then Primo started talking about how and why he knew Dimitri. As he did so, Primo had to tell him the entire story about how he ended up becoming a part of the underground and why he stole people’s identities.

It was quite dramatic for Tiger’s taste, but somehow, he understood Primo more deeply.

Primo had no other choice. He was a naturally kind person and a caring brother to his little siblings. Unfortunately, he met disgusting people who ruined him. No wonder Heaven had her hesitations when she found out about Alexander Cafre’s past.

One way or another, Heaven and Alexander Cafre were alike.

Heaven, or rather, Hera, also treated them like her own family. They weren’t blood-related, but she would unhesitatingly offer an arm if that was the only way to save them. Even when she was dying, she only thought of them and how to make sure they would survive once she took her last breath. She dedicated every bit of her breath to them.

The only difference between Alexander Cafre and Hera was experience.

She was born in hell; the only flower who bloomed in such a place. Thus, she knew she only had two options: become ten times stronger than everyone else or become a victim. Alexander Cafre, on the other hand, had no experience at all. He didn’t know how sickening other people were capable of until he became a victim.

"Don’t misunderstand. I didn’t mention this, so you pity me or the sort," Primo broke the prolonged silence, mustering his courage to look back at Tiger. "So, don’t look at me with pity..." he trailed off as soon as he locked eyes with Tiger.

One reason Primo wasn’t telling his story to anyone was because he didn’t need their pity. The only reason he told Tiger about it was to make a point. However, when he looked at Tiger, there wasn’t any trace of pity in his eyes.

"Who’s pitying who?" Tiger replied, looking away from him and resting his back against the headboard. "It’s not like you’re the only person who met disgusting people. In a way, it sounds like I’m listening to Moose’s story one more time. It’s another the rich trampling the poor all over again. Although yours is probably on a different level, everyone I know had their fair share of terrible memories."

"I always believed everyone would reach a point in their lives that they’d take any hand — even the devil — for help..." he continued quietly, lowering his gaze to his hands. "Many weren’t lucky to find a truly good person who helped us out of the goodness of their heart. But there were a few, like you and me, who were lucky to meet people who helped with genuine intention. Because of that, we’d become reliant on them. And then, at one point, we’d wished it was better if they weren’t as kind as they were."

"It was better if they were just wicked and used us to their benefit. If only they did, it wouldn’t be that hard to let them go," he continued quietly and solemnly. "If only they weren’t so selfless, it wouldn’t hurt that much, don’t you think?"

Primo pressed his lips into a thin line and then gazed down with a soft expression. "Hmm," he hummed, finally being understood by someone.

Losing Marra, Alexa, and Martin was painful. However, losing Mr. Garner left a different kind of scar in his heart. When Primo met Mr. Garner, he already lost all the reasons to live. But Mr. Garner showed him there was more to life than death. However, not long after, Mr. Garner’s health declined. When the old man succumbed to his illness, it was like the last straw.

Just like what Tiger said, Primo also wished Mr. Garner turned out to be a wicked person. It would be much better if he treated Primo like an object. If only he did, his death wouldn’t hurt just as much. In that case, they wouldn’t say those people who helped them were the only ones they had.

"The hell with this mood?" Tiger clicked his tongue and sighed, gazing up at the ceiling as he took another deep breath. After a moment, he cocked his head to the side where Primo’s bed was at. "I said I didn’t like you and even now, I don’t. I will never forget what you have done in the past."

Primo slowly set his gaze back to Tiger and smiled bitterly. "I’m aware. It’s not like I’m here to make friends or the sort. I only mentioned my story to make a point that if there’s someone that should settle a score with Dimitri, that should be me—"

"But even so, I’m glad I beat up that annoying old folk." Slowly, the side of Tiger’s lips curled up into a smirk and the side of his eyes squinted even more. "It’s quite a fitting death, isn’t it?"

Primo’s brows rose in surprise before his stiff shoulders relaxed. A smile slowly turned up on his face and nodded.

"I bet his every breath made him wish to be the last."

"Heh. I bet he did." Tiger snickered with a proud smirk while Primo kept his gaze on him. For some reason, they both laughed. Wicked as it sounded that they were laughing at someone’s death, they didn’t feel anything wrong with it.

Was it strange? For Primo, to feel this sort of way for these people who were once his enemy?

He wondered... would his life be different if he met these guys instead of Mr. Garner? Although he was deeply indebted to Mr. Garner, he couldn’t help but wonder if life would be much more bearable or maybe a little fun if he was surrounded by selfish people like Moose and Tiger.

Who knows?
