Chapter 878: The story behind the man with thousands identities

"The only thing that you can control is yourself. If you do, they won’t have any power over you."

Primo held his breath, eyes wide on the old Mr. Garner.

"I came in here because I am now ready to face reality," Mr. Garner continued. "And I won’t advise my methods to others. After all, I realized that it’s only effective for a short while. However, when I saw you and that look in your eyes when you came, I couldn’t help but remember myself. A man who lost all will live, and after that visit, the look in your eyes was way worse than when you first came in."

Mr. Garner leaned back and breathed in the fresh air, eyes away from Primo. "I warn you that my offer is a double-edged sword. You might come back to reality in the process or sooner, unlike me, who reached this age until I become ready to be myself."

"Before I say it, let me ask you one thing." He slowly looked back at Primo and smiled. "Do you... want to forget everything? Are you willing to forget Alexander Cafre, those children, and everyone?"

"The only person I will never forget is that man."

Mr. Garner smiled and nodded. "Then are you willing to be me?"

"Huh?" Primo furrowed his brows.

"Did it sound a little weird?" Mr. Garner chuckled and then rubbed his chin. "How about becoming Greg?"

"Greg?"

"Greg Garner. That’s my son’s name, and he’s probably the same age as you if he were still alive."

The lines between Primo’s brows deepened, confused at the words of the old man. Meanwhile, Mr. Garner smiled despite the confusion plastered on Primo’s face.

"If you accept my offer, I’ll make sure you’ll forget everything. And whoever that man who caused you so much pain will never touch you again." Mr. Garner remarked, offering his hand to Primo. "Will you take this offer, Mr. Cafre?"

Primo gazed down at the hand between him and the old man before lifting his eyes to him. "The man who visited me a week ago told me that he would kill the people who were kind to me the same way he did to my siblings. I’m saying this before taking that hand, Mr. Garner."

"At this age, such puny threats won’t work." Mr. Garner quipped. "So, are you willing to be Greg, Mr. Cafre? Although I’m warning, you might be surprised how dangerous Greg’s life is."

Primo pressed his lips and then chuckled. At this point, there was nothing to lose. It wasn’t like he was hopeful, but for once, he wanted to rebel. If Dimitri didn’t want him to have hope, then he wanted to upset him even more. By that, Dimitri might come to him personally and release Primo from his misery.

"Son," he said, wearing a small smile, holding Mr. Garner’s hand. "Is your condition getting worse for calling me another name?"

Mr. Garner burst out of laughter after hearing Primo’s remarks. He then tapped his hand, nodding at him approvingly.

"Forgive me, son. Your father’s memory isn’t as good as it used to be." He smiled warmly, squeezing Primo’s hand mildly. "That’s right, Greg. That’s right."

******

After Primo accepted Mr. Garner’s offer, a surprise came to him the next morning. His doctor discharged him and Mr. Garner, telling him he was all better and all of that. At first, Primo found it strange. But then he realized Mr. Garner had quite a connection to be able to get them out of the facility.

Primo thought he would never get out of this place, considering the man named Dimitri was watching him. Either way, he already told Mr. Garner about everything he knew, and Mr. Garner reassured him not to worry. And that was what he did.

Foolish as it may sound, Primo knew deep in his heart that Mr. Garner was aware he was merely using the old man. He was simply using him to rebel against Dimitri. So, even when Mr. Garner’s offer was strange on so many levels, Primo gave it a try.

Much to his surprise, Mr. Garner was much more than he expected him to be. Mr. Garner was what people call a don in the underground. He was involved in many illegal activities, but his business was more focused on smuggling goods, such as firearms and luxury items.

"Who would have thought even a syndicate group has so much paperwork to do?" Primo murmured, sitting behind the desk that was filled with a stack of papers. He pushed the swivel chair away, stretching his legs and arms. As he did so, he caught the wall clock.

It was already midnight, yet he still had so much work to do.

"Is this what he said when he mentioned Greg’s life is full of dangers?" he whispered to himself, looking around the grand office where he had been working.

The corner of his lips curled up a bit. It had been six months since he came into this place. Aside from the paperwork, there was nothing significant, he recalled. Everyone called him Sir Greg and treated him with respect, as if he was truly the only son of Mr. Garner.

Primo studied Greg from Mr. Garner’s stories during all these times. He could confidently say he knew Greg Garner, the young man, who was killed even before he could reach adulthood. Thanks to Mr Garner’s low-key way of living, it was easy for him to twist his story.

"But even so..." he whispered, thinking how everyone called and treated him as Greg Garner. "... I am not Greg."

A deep exhale escaped Primo, thinking Mr. Garner truly had a loose screw in his head. He told Primo he would forget everything, but acting as Greg Garner wasn’t enough. The paperwork had been a good diversion, but deep down, Primo knew who he was and that he was simply acting.

It wasn’t as effective as he thought it was.

Primo pushed himself away from the chair and grabbed a glass of whiskey. Stepping out of the terrace, Primo gazed down at the whiskey in his hand.

"I didn’t notice," he murmured, realizing he poured himself a glass of whiskey that Greg Garner might like based on his study if he reached this age. Primo, or rather, Alexander, preferred beer. Yet, without realizing it, he was choosing Greg Garner’s preferences over his.

"Ah..." Primo chuckled as he shook his head, setting his eyes on the beautiful garden ahead. "So, this is what he meant? Maybe I’m too early to doubt him."

And Primo’s theory was correct. After another six months, he slowly believed he was Greg Garner. From the way he spoke, the way he walked, and even how he decided on most things based on Greg’s character. Before Primo knew it, he had slowly forgotten Alexander Cafre, thanks to all of Greg’s affairs.

But his life didn’t stop living as Greg Garner, because he continued to steal people’s identities to cope with Mr. Garner’s death. This time, to correct his mistake of taking Greg Garner’s identity. He targeted people like Primo Rossi, whom he knew he wouldn’t get attached to and people he wouldn’t feel sorry for hurting.
