Chapter 877: Stop being you

Chapter 877: Stop being you

After Primo’s conversation with that man with a mole near his eye, everything after that was a blur. He didn’t even know how he got back in the ward, nor could he remember anything that came after that. Even the days after that were a blur to him.

All he could think of were the words the man spewed.

[It was all your fault, was what he wanted to tell you. You wouldn’t have lost them if you didn’t upset Dimitri.]

[Do not forget that name, Mr. Cafre.]

[Don’t even dare get better or start a new life. Hell is where you are supposed to be.]

[Unless you beg him.]

Those words would replay in his mind like a broken record. But instead of throwing him into a series of aggressive feats, it only left Primo staring at the nothingness. After thinking about those warnings against his will, he realized that the man came to see him to make sure Primo wouldn’t have any silly idea of getting better.

They wanted him to stay in this wicked loop all his life. Not that Primo had ever hoped he would get better. But alas, unlike the days before that man visited him, Primo realized he was much doing much better than before he was admitted into the facility.

"You’ve been like this since that time you got a visitor." Suddenly, an elderly voice penetrated the silence around Primo. Mr. Garner sat on the bench Primo had been sitting since coming in here, turning his head to look at the young man.

"I assume the visit is not a good one," he continued, shifting his eyes to some patients who received their visitors in the facility’s park. "After that visit, your eyes returned to the same lifelessness they had when you came in here. Perhaps it’s worse now."

"Why..." Primo’s voice shook as a tear rolled down his cheek, keeping his gaze ahead. "... were wicked people exist, Garner?"

"Hmm?" Mr. Garner looked back at the young man after his query.

"People who had it all, specifically? Somehow, I understand those who came from rock bottom resorting to bad deeds. Most of them were just simply trying to survive. But, those people who didn’t have any problems with money, those who would have enough food on the table whether they pray or not, I just don’t understand," Primo continued quietly. "That man who murdered those poor children didn’t struggle just as much as we did. Even before he was born, his future was already set. He didn’t have to work hard."

"His every meal is a feast, and every ingredient in the dishes he eats were all fresh. Compared to us, who would have to hesitate to spend every dime, he could throw a few bills without any worry," he added under his breath. "Yet, despite all the blessings many people wished to have, he kills people for fun. He butchers them for the most menial reasons."

His face crumpled as he clutched his lap, almost at the brink of breaking down. "Those people... they step and trample on others like insects. They would use people in their wicked games while fully understanding they’re hurting them."

"Am I born... to meet these people?" A weak laugh escaped his pale lips, tasting the saltiness of his tears. "First my mother, and then all the men she met took home until that good-for-nothing brought those kids home. There’s also that one filthy rich classmate in high school who bullies others. He made me do his homework — though he pays me a bit for my services. And there’s also one in college who passed everything because of his family. I could remember a few students who got into law school because of their money."

"Even after that, I kept meeting people like them. Some clients who want to get away from trampling and exploiting the others, people who would help them get away from it, and many few who will turn a blind eye to it." Another weak laugh escaped him as he thought about his pathetic life. "Although there were good people in the mix, the ratio was devastating."

He lowered his eyes and forced a smile, huffing the heaviness in his heart. "Which makes me wonder. Was the reason I was born so I prove how wicked this world is? Was my existence only meant to be another person’s entertainment? Because so far, that’s how I see it."

"One good thing will come, and then ten bad things will happen. Even after losing them and I’m still processing to get better, someone will come and make sure I will fail. So, what’s the point, Garner?" Slowly, Primo looked at Mr. Garner, who had been listening to his sentiments in silence. "Why struggle when you know someone will come unannounced and ruin everything to the ground? Why do I have to get better when getting better only gives others a chance to hurt me?"

His breath hitched as his neck turned taut. "Why... do I have to live when every breath I take kills a part of me? Why? Just... why do I have to be me?"

"Then, don’t be you." This time, Mr. Garner answered him, putting a halt to Primo’s sentiments. "Stop being you."

Primo’s brows rose as another tear rolled down his cheeks. Mr. Garner sighed heavily as he studied Primo for a second before he looked away.

"I’m not the person to talk, young one. With everything that I have done after losing my family, I am not qualified to speak in a way that will bring you comfort," Mr. Garner expressed, letting out another deep sigh. "Back then, I have the same questions. Why did I meet certain people? Although my greed is the answer to that, the truth is still hard to swallow. I believed I was untouchable, and it was true. I was untouchable, but that didn’t mean my wife and son were."

Mr. Garner chuckled bitterly, setting his eyes back to Primo. "From years of experience, there’s one thing I learned, Cafre. That is, don’t ever try to understand other people. You just have to take it as they were the way they were and there was nothing you can do about it."

"The only thing that you can control is yourself," he added. "If you do, they won’t have any power over you."
