Chapter 876: Don’t even dare get better
"Once you made up your mind, I’ll tell you the secrets of how to break free from the chains of your mind."
What a tempting offer.
After Mr. Garner left Primo on the bench, he pondered about it. He was surprised that Mr. Garner knew about him. It only showed the old man in the same ward as he wasn’t just a normal patient, just like everyone else. Even so, Primo didn’t have to feel the need to feel hostile. Perhaps because, at one point, death didn’t terrify him anymore.
Primo thought of death countless times before coming to this place. Therefore, even if Mr. Garner was bad news, he didn’t feel the need to struggle. That was right. Primo might not be able to take his own life; if someone came to do that for him, he wouldn’t mind.
With that thought in mind, he went through his day like usual. He shrugged off the offer Mr. Garner gave him, not interested in holding onto false hope. Even professionals in the facility couldn’t treat him. It was only foolish to believe another patient would.
Until one day, Primo had an unexpected visitor.
"Who... are you?" Primo furrowed his brows, squinting his eyes as he studied the person sitting across from him in the facility’s park.
The old man in a suit across from him appeared to be in his late forties or maybe earlier fifties. There wasn’t anything significant about him except that big mole near his right eye. It didn’t matter. This man was someone Primo had never met in his life. Therefore, a myriad of questions hovered in his mind at the sight of him.
"Who I am isn’t important, Mr. Cafre," said the stranger monotonously. "But the person who sent me wants me to check on your well-being.."
"The person who sent you?" Primo furrowed his brows even more. "Who?"
"It doesn’t matter."
Primo scoffed at the man’s response. "So you don’t want to introduce yourself and the person who sent you? What an arrogant bunch." He shook his head, chuckling. "If so, I don’t think I should be here then. After all, you’ve seen that I’m doing perfectly fine."
Primo placed his hands on the table between them and pushed himself up. He walked away, not interested in entertaining someone who wouldn’t even introduce himself. Meanwhile, the old man remained seated with a plain expression.
"My boss wasn’t particularly in the mood. So to make himself feel better, he wants to know how are you doing and what your feelings are about losing your entire family from the same man you kept from getting imprisoned."
When the man spoke once more, Primo halted from his steps. He slowly turned around, looking at the aloof old man, only to see the latter with a poker face.
"What did you say?" Primo breathed out as if felt he misheard the man. But the man’s next words proved he heard him right.
The old man slowly locked eyes with him. "J Electronics had always known John was different from the rest. He was a sadist but was clever enough to conceal his true nature from people’s eyes. He’s annoying, was what my boss described him. So, he wanted to dispose of him."
"For him to do that without sullying his hands is to expose his evil nature. Do you think John was simply being careless when he was caught the first time?" the old man continued insensitively. "My employer made an effort to put him in prison where he’d meet his demise. However, you took his case and sabotaged his plans. If only didn’t butt in, your siblings would still be alive and you weren’t in this mental facility."
"Seeing you still hadn’t gotten better would please him. It also saved me the trouble of meddling. After all, he doesn’t want you to forget everything as a punishment for spoiling his game." The old man slowly rose from his seat and marched toward Primo. Before he walked past him, he stopped and placed a hand on his shoulder. He lowered his head and whispered in his ear;
"It was all your fault, was what he wanted to tell you. You wouldn’t have lost them if you didn’t upset Dimitri." A glint flickered across the man’s eyes as he pulled his head back, only to see Primo looking back at him blankly. "Do not forget that name, Mr. Cafre. The name of the man who punished you."
With that being said, the man retrieved his hand from Primo’s shoulder and took three steps away. But after that, he stopped and added another message from his boss which he almost forgot.
"Right." He rocked his head, glancing over his shoulder. "He also told me to tell you don’t even dare get better or start a new life. Hell is where you are supposed to be. If you even try, he’ll take away everyone in your life: your friends, colleagues, those who were kind to you, and even the people you like."
"Unless you beg him... were the words he wanted me to tell you," he added. "Very well. My job is done here. I’ll tell him his message was received."
And just like that, the man walked away without another word. Meanwhile, Primo stood motionless in the same spot. His eyes were blank, barely blinking. That man’s words and warnings repeated in his mind like a broken record.
"Dimitri," Primo whispered, finally remembering that phone in the bathroom. When Primo caught Mr. John in the toilet and started beating him, he remembered catching a phone in the corner of his eye. Because of the countless overwhelming emotions, Primo almost forgot about that small detail. On the screen, he caught a person’s name on it.
Dimitri.
"Hah..." Primo’s knees trembled as he wobbled down until he was sitting on the ground. "Hah..."
[You’re here, attorney? Call my father... or rather, my cousin, to clean this mess for me. Wait for me outside. I’ll give you my testimony after this.]
Cousin.
Mr. John did say that.
Primo clasped his chest, almost hyperventilating at the revelation his mind was uncovering based on the man’s words and the minor information that slipped from his mind. He didn’t know which emotion was dominating his heart at the moment. Was he devastated at the fact that another smart and more evil psycho simply manipulated Mr. John? And thus, the real culprit behind the Cafre massacre? Or was he scared that there was no way for him to get better and out of this wicked cycle with that person watching him?
Either way, there was only one question Primo had in mind:
Just what did his siblings do wrong to deserve to be those sick bastards’ pawns?
