Chapter 873: A march to madness

GASP!

Primo gasped for air as he instinctively sat up from the floor. His entire body was drenched with sweat, damping his clothes. Looking around, all he could see were empty cans of beer, packaging of spoiled foods, and trash he couldn’t throw away at the proper disposal.

The television was still on, but it was on a mute. Even so, it supplied enough light for him to see everything in this dark small apartment.

Ever since Mr. John was prosecuted, Primo left everything behind. He didn’t return to the firm, even though his colleagues told him he was always welcome to return. He couldn’t come back to the apartment he bought for himself and his siblings, as it would only remind him of the incident.

With nowhere else to go or anything he wanted to do, Primo simply rented a small apartment in an unfamiliar town. He just chose a place that was far from everything, not knowing what he would do with his life after that. So far, he had succumbed to drinking until he passed out while mustering the courage to take his own life.

He probably got the justice his siblings deserved, but his life right now was far from living. He spent most of his life trying to protect those children. Now that they were gone, he realized he had never had a plan for his future without them. Thus, not having them in his life anymore tossed him into a wicked cycle of misery.

Primo dragged his feet to the small refrigerator to check if he still had beers. Unfortunately, he drank all of them early this morning. He picked up his hoodie to buy some. When Primo stepped out of the apartment, he glanced up.

It was evening again.

"I wonder what she’ll say if she finds out my schedule," he wondered lifelessly, thinking about Marra at the moment. "She won’t find out now, will she?"

A bitter smile turned up on his bearded face, covering his head with a hood. He slipped his hands inside the pockets of his jacket, dragging his feet to the only place he would visit in this place: the convenience store. Ever since moving into this place, the only place he would go to was the convenience store to buy beers and maybe something to eat.

This was the only thing he could do for himself. Other than buying beers and a little bit of food, he didn’t have the energy to keep his hygiene or anything like that. Which explained the odd looks from the very few people who would see him on the way. Not that he cared whatever about other people’s thoughts.

"Did you eat, Mister?"

At the cashier, a young man flashed Primo a big smile as he put down a carton of beer on the counter. Lifting his pair of dead eyes, Primo couldn’t help but remember Marra. This young cashier was probably the same age as Marra.

"Sir, you still reeked of alcohol, and you always just buy beers from here." The young man scanned the barcode as he talked. "I’m getting a bit worried since you’re much skinnier than when you first came in here."

Primo let out a sigh and took out a bill, snatching the plastic as soon as the cashier finished, before walking away.

"Mister, your change!" the cashier yelled, but Primo didn’t stop. The young man frowned and sighed, staring at the door as it swung to and fro. "What a weird man."

Meanwhile, Primo shook his head as he shoved his hand inside the plastic. But instead of taking out a can of beer to drink on his way home, he felt a small packet inside. When he fished it out to check, all he saw was a small bun in his hand.

"Why worry about a stranger?" he whispered, tossing the bun the young cashier slipped in the plastic with the beers. Primo then took out a can of beer, drinking a mouthful. At this rate, he might die from this lifestyle. However, who cared?

As Primo walked through a dark street on the way to his apartment, he caught a couple from the other end of the street. He pulled the hood of his jacket to hide his face, not wanting to meet people’s eyes. As he walked past the lone working street lamp, he heard a snippet of the couple’s conversation.

"Gosh..." a woman whispered. "It’s really scary."

"I know, right?" the man with him agreed playfully. "But don’t worry, I won’t do that to you in the bathroom. I’ll do it somewhere else."

"Gosh!" the woman punched her lover’s chest. "I’m not staying with you alone if you say that!"

"Haha! You can’t get away from me. Even if you don’t stay with me, I’ll find a way to get in."

Primo suddenly stopped from his steps upon hearing the voice of the man. Was it the conversation? Or the voice? He slowly turned around, setting them on the lovers who were walking away from him.

"Mr. John," he whispered. "Why is he... why is he outside?"

His irises dilated while his pupils constricted. Without thinking, Primo dropped the plastic from his arm and marched to the couple with large steps. He reached his hand out, grabbed the man’s shoulder, and spun his back. Before his eyes could even meet the man, a punch already landed on the man’s face.

"Kyah!!!" the woman who was with the man screamed in horror, jumping to the side while her lover was being beaten up by a crazy stranger. "Help!"

"Ugh! Argh!" the man, who couldn’t fight back, could only grunt at every punch assaulting his face and body.

"You!" Primo’s voice shook, jumping on the man when the latter tried to crawl away. "What are you doing here? Will you kill her too?! I should’ve killed you back then — I should’ve known your family would do something underhanded to get you out of prison!"

Blood spluttered to his cheek, punching the man repeatedly while speaking through his gritted teeth. "Die, die, die! I’ll kill you, Mr. John!"

"Stop it!" the woman screamed, mustering her courage to stop Primo, but to no avail. The moment she grabbed Primo’s arm, he simply swung his arm away to push her back. And then, he continued to beat the man until help arrived to stop his madness.
