Chapter 874: A danger to society

"Yes, he assaulted five men in total."

"Many residents in the area were also growing concerned about the man who suddenly appeared in their town. At first, people tried to understand. However, he almost killed that man. If the police didn’t come, he would’ve been dead."

"What happened to him is unfortunate, and everyone feels sorry for him. But he’s not supposed to be outside. He’s not only dangerous for others but also for himself." The officers explained to the woman who came after the report. "The victim wants to press charges."

"I understand." Prosecutor Mitchel nodded. "Thank you for calling me. I’ll handle it from here."

"Thank you for understanding, Prosecutor Mitchel." The officer expressed his gratitude for her understanding while Prosector Mitchel offered a short smile. When he bid her farewell, a huff escaped her.

Prosecutor Mitchel walked toward the station’s cell, catching a figure sitting in the corner. Another sigh escaped her lips, not saying a word as another officer came to release Primo.

"You..." Prosecutor Mitchel trailed off before she could even say anything. She glanced at the front passenger seat where Primo sat. "I won’t take you to your apartment."

Primo didn’t respond, keeping his eyes ahead, but it seemed his mind was drifting elsewhere.

"Goodness, Cafre." She shook her head, rolling down the window. "You stink."

Even that attempt to tease him didn’t work. And so she started driving away from the station to another destination.

"How can you beat someone up to the brink of death?" she spoke once more, just so their journey wouldn’t become a silent and awkward one. "They wanted to press charges. You’re a lawyer, an exceptional one at that. So, I’m certain you know how long you’d be locked up if you don’t do something about it."

Still, he didn’t answer.

"Alexander Cafre," she called, eyes on the road. "I know what happened is... tragic. But you can’t just live like this. Marra, Alexa, and Martin wouldn’t be happy if they knew about this."

"How would they know?" this time, Primo answered with an almost dead voice.

Prosecutor Mitchel glanced at the front passenger seat, only to see Primo staring at the windshield blankly.

"How would they know I am living the way I live when they’re dead?" he continued under his breath. "No matter how bad I do, and no matter how crazy I get, they wouldn’t know. That man massacred them. Perhaps it’s better to be locked up. At least I get to see him inside. I’ll kill him."

He gulped and nodded. "I’ll kill him, Mitchel. The J Electronics will surely find a way to get him out of there, so I’ll kill him before he ever gets out."

"He’s dead." Prosecutor Mitchel clicked her tongue as she tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

"Huh?"

"That sick psycho died after a month in his cell. They said he bit his tongue and cut it up," she explained quietly. "When the officers found him the next morning, he was already dead."

Primo slowly turned his head to the driver’s seat, wide-eyed.

"You probably didn’t hear about it since you disappeared after the trial ended, but Mr. John is dead. The J Electronics also declared bankruptcy because of it," she continued. "I heard the chairman of J Electronics had another heart attack the day of the trial, and their stock market plummeted. Meanwhile, Mr. John’s father committed suicide while his wife went into hiding. Because of the trial, their illegal conducts were also uncovered. Now, everyone in J Electronics was a fugitive."

Prosecutor Mitchel paused. "They... cannot touch you anymore, Alex. They’re paying heavily for everything they had done."

Primo’s chapped lips quivered, studying her side profile. From the looks of it, she wasn’t lying. Not that she had any reason to.

"I heard what happened and why you took his case that time," she added quietly. "You should’ve asked for help, Alex. That senior who pressured you to take the case was part of a money laundering scheme with J Electronics. He was also arrested."

Primo slowly looked away, trying to process what had happened when he disappeared after the trial concluded. He touched his chest, wondering what sort of emotion he should feel right now. But alas, he neither felt relieved hearing all of that nor did he feel any sort of joy that good people like Prosecutor Mitchel fight for justice. If anything, Primo felt empty.

"Is that so?" he murmured. "I guess that’s a good thing."

Prosecutor Mitchel glanced at him and sighed. When she set her eyes back on the road, she spoke once again.

"I’m taking you to a psychiatric facility," she said. "Since you don’t have any family or guardians, I stand as your guardian. So, I think it’s best to stay in the facility until you’re okay."

"Mhm."

"You do understand why I’m doing this, right, Alex?"

"Mhm."

"Alex."

"It doesn’t matter," Primo replied quietly, looking at the window beside him. "I can be in prison or a mental facility or six feet deep — it doesn’t matter. It’s not like there’s a place in this world where they were, so it doesn’t really matter."

"I’m doing this so you’d be better and might see life from a different perspective," she explained with a heavy sigh. "Once you recover, I’m sure you’ll get back on your feet and start a new. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to return to the courthouse. You can be a professor at a university or maybe start painting again. With your skills and knowledge, I’m sure you’ll figure it out on your own."

Primo slowly looked back at Prosecutor Mitchel, only to see her smiling subtly. Perhaps this was one of the things he disliked about her. Her optimism. She was a naturally kind person. Despite what had happened, she was still concerned about his affairs, even though she didn’t have to.

His lips parted to express the word, ’thank you,’ but his voice didn’t come out for some reason. Thinking about that time now, Primo realized why he didn’t thank her. At that moment, he had a faint hunch that the mental facility wouldn’t fix him, just as she hoped.

And he was right. It didn’t fix him. That place only birthed a person who would devastate many people.
