Chapter 871: Justice served
Chapter 871: Justice served
Primo wanted to kill him — the man who took the lives of the innocent Marra, Alexa, and Martin. He planned to. Consumed with anger, his every punch and kick meant to kill Mr. John. However, just as they said, bad people don’t die easily.
Help arrived soon after Primo discovered Mr. John doing the unspeakable to Marra. He could barely remember the events after that, but he did remember being seized to the ground while he struggled to reach for the already dying Mr. John. Before he fell unconscious, Primo’s eyes veered to Marra in the shower.
’Marra...’ he whispered, his body growing heavy as a thick layer of tears coated his eyes. "Ma... rra..."
That was the last memory etched in Primo as he succumbed to the darkness right after that. Until now, Primo was uncertain if he wished not to wake up after that or if he still hoped to have woken up from this nightmare. But what he was certain was that the events after that gruesome crime followed a more devastating twist of fate.
Sitting in the court as a witness, Primo stared blankly into nothingness. When he woke up in the hospital, the police were the ones who were waiting for him and not his siblings. Perhaps, the sight of them was the last straw. He couldn’t remember everything that they were telling him or asking him. But he did acknowledge the fact that the prosecutor’s office helped arrange the funeral for him after conducting an autopsy.
The prosecutor in charge of the case? Prosecutor Mitchel.
What a twist.
Primo blinked weakly, turning his head to the side. There, standing beside the aisle, was Prosecutor Mitchel, looking down at him with mixed emotions in her eyes.
[You know your client is crazy, and that poor young lady won’t be his last victim.]
[Mara is now a young lady. She’s only a few years younger than that woman he mercilessly butchered. I can’t believe you’re allowing a psycho like him to walk in this world where your sisters walk.]
[May you not regret this decision, Alex.]
’Ah...’ Primo’s lips parted, recalling that argument he had with Prosecutor Mitchel two years ago. She was right. Primo defended a legit nutcase and that he would regret taking the case in the future.
The future... and now his present.
A tear rolled down his cheek as he recalled the warnings this woman gave him in that parking space. He should’ve just listened to her. If only he did, would those poor children still be alive? If he refused the case at that time, Primo might lose his job and no firm might take him, considering the threat he received during those times. However, with this nightmare he faced, he thought juggling multiple odd jobs was much better.
It wasn’t like his siblings asked for a grand life. All they asked of him was to take care of himself and that they were already happy as long as they were together. It was Primo who wanted to give them a better life, which he thought they deserved. If only he knew he wasn’t leading them to a good life but to this nightmare, he wouldn’t have tried so much and so hard.
"We’ll get him." Prosecutor Mitchel placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it and nodding at him reassuringly. "I won’t let him get away this time."
After saying her piece, she retrieved her hand and walked to her seat. Meanwhile, Primo stayed seated with his eyes fixed on her. His tears kept rolling down his cheek, his lips quivering. Knowing her, he was expecting for her to say, ’I told you so,’or anything of the sort. But alas, she didn’t.
’Anyone who would hear this will find it laughable,’ he thought, smiling bitterly at the situation.
Not long ago, Prosecutor Mitchel and Primo were going head to head in court. She was trying to put Mr. John behind bars while Primo was defending the man. Primo won the case. But now, Primo stood as a witness to the crime of his former client and as the victim’s family. He remembered Mr. John’s victim’s family back then as well.
This was probably what they felt, or maybe worse.
Soon, the culprit, Mr. John, joined the court with a few officers escorting him. Lifting his eyes, Primo felt this sudden clench in his heart. Back then, when Mr. John appeared in court, the victim’s family raged at the sight of him. Some even tried to assault him, leading them to be escorted out of the court.
Primo wanted to do the same.
However, at this moment, while staring at Mr. John, he couldn’t help but see the situation two years ago overlap with the present. He couldn’t help but see himself standing beside this cruel murderer as his defense lawyer.
This must be his karma.
His karma for his big ambition, a price he paid for turning on his morals, and the consequences of fighting for the wrong.
Primo had been in the courtroom many times. Therefore, he already memorized the proceeding. Despite the urge to jump from his seat and kill Mr. John in so many ways, just like how he murdered him in his mind, he stayed where he was. For once, Primo wanted to believe the system wouldn’t fail him. After all, no lawyer took the case this time. Perhaps they were all worried what happened to Primo would happen to them as well. Or maybe the J Electronics gave him up and didn’t bother protecting Mr. John anymore.
Either way, since no one was there to protect Mr. John anymore, the case was an easy one. Mr. John seemed to be so excited about his killing spree that he left quite a ton of evidence from the moment he started stalking Marra to the time of the incident. Thus, the trial went smooth sailing and Mr. John was found guilty.
Yet, despite convicting him to life in prison, Primo didn’t feel the need to celebrate. Even when justice was served and Mr. John wouldn’t victimize more innocent people, the emptiness in his heart remained. At the end of the day, it wouldn’t bring back the lives he had taken.
And that was the harsh reality.
