Chapter 867: You... what?!

Meanwhile, in a private plane...

Dominic turned his head, and his eyes instantly fell on Heaven. Seeing the inscrutable look on her face, he reached for her hand and squeezed it. His touch brought her back to the current lapse, looking back at him with slightly elevated brows.

"Are you okay?" he asked with a tinge of worry. "You’ve been quiet this whole time. It makes me worried."

Heaven wore a short smile and nodded. "I’m just thinking about the kids."

"They will be fine," he reassured. "You left them with Mom and Dad; Miriam is with them. Miri likes her, so they’ll be fine. Not to mention, Princess and Gray are there to protect them. I also asked Axel to look after the children’s safety."

Dominic paused, smiling helplessly. "If there’s a safer place right now, that would be in their place."

"I know that. I’m not worried about Miracle." Heaven exhaled deeply, lowering her eyes slightly. "I’m more worried about Basti."

"What about him?"

"Basti had grown attached to some of the people around him." A bitter smile turned up on her face as her eyes softened. "If Dane... I mean, Dimitri thought of dragging them into this mess... I don’t think I can look our son in the eye if he asks me where the people have gone to."

The words she had spoken were not enough to express the worry she had in her heart. As a child, no one understood the sadness she felt whenever an auntie or uncle would never return home. Thinking that Sebastian would experience the same already broke her heart.

"Do you think... all of these people with us might not return home?" he asked, watching her look back at him. Heaven didn’t answer, but her silence was enough to know her answer.

"This is... my reality, darling." Her bitter smile stretched mildly. "Everything has its risk, and being optimistic will only hurt you. Might as well expect the worst."

"What’s your worst-case scenario?" he asked once again.

This time, Heaven took her time to answer. It wasn’t because she didn’t have an immediate answer to that, but because she didn’t want to say it. She didn’t want to worry about all of them.

"We’ll lose," she answered quietly. "If we do, our children will be in trouble for sure. Unless Dimitri finds it in his heart that those children had nothing to do with this."

Heaven narrowed her eyes as she lowered her gaze. "This is the reason I don’t want to make any movement in the beginning. If I was in my original body, I wouldn’t mind going all out. Cruel as it may, but I don’t mind losing one or a few people. After all, we had already accepted our fates long ago."

"But as Heaven Liu, there’s so many people I cannot afford to lose. Basti, Miracle, Axel..." she paused, lifting her eyes back to her husband. "And you."

"Is that why you suggested that I stay behind?" he inquired with a humorous smile. "Not because of the upcoming election, but because you’re worried I’d die?"

"I’m sorry if you feel like I’m looking down on you."

Dominic shook his head mildly. "Don’t be sorry. I understand." A reassuring smile dominated his face, squeezing her hand to emphasize his presence.

"You’re used to this kind of life and I am not in the place to criticize. You didn’t have a choice to be your parent’s daughter," he continued in the same tone. "I don’t think you have to be sorry for growing up in such an environment because, as a child, we only take what our parents give to us. You think you have a choice once you’ve reached a certain age, but in your case, it’s a little too late for that."

"The more reason I should stay with you... especially in this situation," he added, nodding. "It might be naive when I could’ve stayed with the children in safety. But I don’t think I won’t lose my mind even before you come home, knowing what kind of place you’re going to."

Dominic cupped her face, rubbing her cheek with his thumb. "Have you forgotten? I told you once; if you can’t see the light, I’ll sit with you in the dark."

"Don’t think I’m simply butting into your business. Dane... approached me for whatever reason. It’s amazing how this world was so vast, yet so little. Who would have thought my assistant for years was actually someone so powerful in the underground? And he’s Dragon’s partner at that."

"Dragon is your enemy, and Dane is mine. I don’t think I can just sit around, knowing someone like him had been in and out of my home, a godfather of my child, and knew almost everything about my life," he expressed. "His reason for approaching me might not be as serious as I expect it to be, but I just know that one of these days, he’ll see me as a good pawn."

"Our fates would be the same," he said logically. "That is why, even in this situation, I’m grateful that I met you. You changed my perspective in life, made me broaden my horizons, and sharpened the skills I thought were enough to protect me and my family."

"This situation is dangerous, Heaven, but I’d rather be in danger with you than sit in the house and wait for you in safety." His smile stretched as his eyes shone with determination. "I might lose an arm or a leg, or even my life. But know that even if I have another chance to choose, I’d make the same decision of coming in here."

"So please, don’t stop just because you’re thinking of me." Dominic retrieved his hand from her cheek while his other hand squeezed hers. "As a man, it hurts my pride that I have to always rely on my wife for protection."

Heaven chuckled, studying the resolve in his eyes. She knew her husband, and she also knew that he wouldn’t bend even if they argued all night. It wasn’t that she planned to stop him in the first place. She just knew there was no way Dominic would stay behind.

"I should’ve sparred with you before, so you understand what real pain feels like," she quipped, earning a chuckle from him. "That might build your pain threshold."

"Don’t worry. I don’t think I mentioned it before, but Bear spars with me," he confessed, making her brows elevated in surprise. "I didn’t want to tell you because I want to impress you. Sometimes, Tiger would also give me a hand in the Hunter’s Zone. Though he wants me to call him my master."

"That jerk..."

"Moose would sometimes join in. Although I can’t confidently say I am on par with them, I’m confident that my skills are much better than before." He smiled, nodding at her reassuringly. "I won’t drag everyone down. If that didn’t give you enough reassurance, how about this one?"

"Hmm?" Heaven furrowed her brows while Dominic leaned in, whispering something in her ear. When he pulled back, her eyes were wide open, looking at him in disbelief.

"You... what?!"

Dominic only grinned widely while her mouth fell open. Whatever he whispered in her ear surely took her by surprise.
