Chapter 866: They just knew.

Chapter 866: They just knew.

Every passing second that Hera hadn’t arrived made Dragon a little more anxious. Considering Ram’s forces were present, things could go awry in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t as though Dragon hadn’t put up any safety precautions. Even so, not seeing her when she should’ve arrived in the greenhouse rang all the bells in his twisted mind. Therefore, he secretly sent out a search party to find Hera.

"Hera!" Dragon’s voice echoed through the pathway leading away from the greenhouse. "Hera!"

With no response, he clenched his teeth in irritation. However, he didn’t jump to conclusions just yet. Although there were already scenarios at the back of his head, he didn’t want to entertain them without confirmation.

"Hera!" Dragon halted when he heard a faint call.

"I’m here!"

"Hera!" Without wasting a moment, Dragon sprinted through the pathway, only to find Hera sitting on the ground. "What..."

His steps slowed as he assessed her situation. Hera was holding her ankle, her heels beside her, and a slightly helpless smile on her face.

"Hera, what’s wrong?" he asked, squatting down beside her.

"I’m sorry," she said, her voice coarse, tears in the corners of her eyes. "I tried calling for help, but no one answered."

She let out a deep exhale, looking down at her ankle. "I wasn’t careful and tripped. How embarrassing." She glanced up at him, worried.

"Was everyone waiting for me?" she asked, ashamed.

"It’s not your fault, and don’t worry about them," Dragon sighed, glancing at her heels. "It’s my fault for not considering your footwear. I just thought it would look pretty."

Hera pressed her lips together and reached for his hand. "I thought no one would find me. I was scared I would be stuck here all night."

"That’s impossible."

"Even so, it scared me," she argued, pouting. "Thank you for finding me, Frank. You don’t know how scared I was."

Dragon held her gaze and nodded, gently cupping her face. "Let’s go."

"Isn’t it embarrassing to go like this?"

"We’re not heading to the dinner party. I’m taking you to the infirmary for your ankle." Dragon quickly assessed her ankle. "Though the dinner is important, your health and safety are the priority."

"Frank..." Her eyes softened. "Won’t your guests get angry if I don’t come?"

"I’d like to see who dares say a word."

Hera studied Dragon’s sincerity and sensed no deception. "How sweet of him," she thought. If only she couldn’t remember everything, it wouldn’t be surprising if she fell for his charm. But alas, she could never forget how he watched her suffer with an evil smirk on his face.

"Maybe we can do this if you carry me?" she suggested, watching his eyebrows raise. "Though embarrassing, I don’t want my absence to cause problems. Besides, I’ll only sit during the dinner, so it won’t worsen my injury."

"Hera, you don’t have to —"

"But I want to." Hera stopped him, squeezing his hand. "My uncle is there, right? Then, the more reason for me to go. I don’t want him to find fault in you or question my husband’s ability to protect me."

Dragon tried to argue, but couldn’t. He just stared at her, realizing how stunning she looked tonight.

"What am I going to do with you?" he sighed helplessly, cupping her face again. "Thank you, darling."

Hera smiled in satisfaction. "You don’t have to thank me. As your wife, I don’t want you to suffer because of me," she said, knowing exactly what Dragon went through because of her.

Understanding the importance of the dinner, Hera decided to attend. It would surely gain his favor, and she wanted to divert Dragon’s attention away from any suspicions about her actions.

"Alright. Shall we go?" he asked, and she nodded. Dragon carefully carried her while Hera wrapped her arms around his neck.

Normally, Dragon wouldn’t hesitate to take her to the infirmary out of genuine care. However, her presence at the banquet would boost his people’s morale. Thus, regardless of his feelings, Dragon carried her to the greenhouse to continue the night’s agenda.

"She’s quite good. How surprising." Fig stood at a distance, observing Dragon carrying Hera. "I didn’t expect her to push through to the banquet, especially knowing he is exploiting her. But then again, Boss likes going to parties and dinners such as this one, even if she’s not invited."

He kept his gaze fixed on them, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

"She won’t be pleased with herself if she witnesses her actions. I almost got the chills when she was thanking Deborah and refusing to go because of someone." Fig shook his head, knowing Hera would be shocked if she saw what he had just witnessed. Not just her, but everyone would be flabbergasted if they were the ones who witnessed that.

"Very well. I guess that’s our opening."

Fig turned and headed toward where Deborah and Hunter were. He instructed Deborah to go ahead; he wanted to see how the new Hera would handle their situation. He didn’t trust her. Moreover, even if Dragon discovered an intruder, Fig was confident he could escape. His request was simply to see if Hera could handle such a situation, and she didn’t disappoint him. For now, at least.

Arriving at the car Hunter used to transport Hera, he peered inside. Shrugging, he settled into the driver’s seat.

"Are you both still alive?" he asked, glancing at the back seat where Deborah and Hunter were.

"Barely," Deborah panted. "I think my wound reopened."

"Let’s get out of here, please," Hunter added weakly.

Fig shook his head as he adjusted and looked away. "Don’t worry," he reassured them. "Though I was against the idea of coming here, considering your conditions, it’s been fruitful."

"Rest now. I promise we’ll leave without any trouble," he added. "I’ll handle things from here."

Hearing Fig’s assurance, Deborah and Hunter smiled with a sense of relief. They didn’t know him well, but his words comforted them, allowing them to sleep, assured they’d wake up safely. How? They just knew.
