Chapter 864: I can’t

"It’ll be a bloody war soon, and knowing Dimitri, you’re the first person he’ll kill. If we’re going to escape, tonight is the only time."

Hera held her breath, unable to discern the strange feeling in her heart. Every day, every passing second that she was in this mansion, her hope of escaping dimmed. Sometimes, she even considered herself growing more foolish than smarter for holding on to the thread of hope she would get out of this predicament.

Although it came at the time she didn’t expect, someone was extending their hands. Deborah might look like someone who just came back from the dead, but this was the only time she had seen this fire in her eyes. It was as if Deborah was certain they would escape.

But why... why was Hera hesitating?

"I... can’t," she whispered, pulling her hands from Deborah’s hold. "I can’t, Deb."

"Hera, if you’re scared that he will catch us, he won’t. I met someone who helped me get out of that torture house. They’re skilled and well-connected. They can help us."

"Deborah, do you even know the people helping you?"

This time, Deborah froze. Seeing her reaction, Hera let out a shallow breath.

"I’m not refusing because I’m scared we’d get caught, Deborah. But I can’t leave... on my own." Hera shook her head mildly. "I can’t leave Leo in here."

"What?"

"I promised him that I’d get him out of here. I am the person responsible for why he’s in this place, so it’s only right for me to take him out of here." Hera forced a smile as she reached for Deborah’s hand once more. "Thank you for risking your life and coming back for me. But I can’t go without him."

Deborah’s lips parted, her heart sinking. She couldn’t believe Hera was refusing just because of another guy.

"Hera..." Deborah whispered, studying the look in Hera’s eyes. "Don’t tell me you... fell for him?"

Hera’s face stiffened but then forced a smile. "It’s nothing like that, Deb. It’s... it’s nothing like that. I just want to help him. After all, if there’s someone who doesn’t deserve to be in this place, that would be him."

"Hera..."

"I will be okay." Hera patted Deborah’s hand, gazing down, only to notice the bandages around it. "Thank you for coming back. But once you get out of here safely, don’t ever come back again. Especially if it’s for me. Just live your life and hide in a place he’ll never find you. I think that’s the best thing you can do for your sister."

Regret filled Deborah’s eyes as her expression softened with helplessness. She wanted to help Hera just because she owed her. It might be foolish to return to this place, especially in her current state, but she still wanted to correct what she had done to her in the past.

"I see. So that’s how it’ll be."

Suddenly, the voice of a man joined their conversation, making Hera turn her head toward the owner of the voice. Deep lines appeared between her brows as she watched a huge figure emerge from the dark.

"You..." Hera whispered as her pupils dilated, rummaging through her memories and found this person in many of them.

Fig studied the look in her eyes and nodded. "By the looks of it, you remember me."

"Ralph."

"I would prefer it if you address me differently," Fig remarked coldly, looking at that face he never thought he would ever see again. "This is strange. Very odd. Looking at that face, and listening to the nonsense you spewed, which I never thought I’d hear from those lips. Well, considering you had stayed here for a long time against your will is already not so her."

Hera gulped a mouthful, understanding Fig’s sentiments deeply. "You knew?"

"For a while now, yes."

"She... told you?"

Fig blinked and took his time to respond. "Deborah mentioned that you retained your memories, correct? So, I assume you should’ve expected she would eventually say everything to us."

"You two... what are you talking about?" Deborah chimed in, darting her eyes between Hera and Fig. "You knew each other?"

"Deborah, how can you trust a man you don’t even know just because he helped you?" Hera replied without taking her eyes off Fig. "Do you even know this man can kill you before you even know it?"

"What?" Deborah breathed out, almost speechless. She then shook her head and huffed. "I know it’s foolish, but what difference would it make if I shook hands with the devil in that torture house?"

"I see." Hera nodded in understanding. "I hope this is the last time you’d be this reckless. Good thing he’s not someone else."

Deborah gulped as she mustered the courage to ask. "How did you guys know each other?"

"I used to work for her." This time, Fig answered, eyes fixated on Hera. "But it’s not that important."

"I see... you’re a foot soldier?"

"Not a mere foot soldier, but one of the core members of the Reapers." Hera drew a deep breath as it seemed Deborah knew nothing about this man. This time, she looked away from Fig to look at Deborah. "Though he is a dangerous enemy, he’s a useful ally."

Deborah’s already pale expression looked paler. Holding her breath, she turned her head to Fig, wide-eyed.

’He’s an underboss?’ she wondered to herself, almost in disbelief. ’This guy?’

Even though Fig helped Deborah and Hunter out of the torture house, he only took down one guy. The rest were taken care of by his partner, who was already gone when she woke up.

Fig arched a brow as he heard approaching noises from where the greenhouse was. "Dragon is probably worried that you still haven’t come."

His remark made Hera and Deborah look at him.

"Considering the time wasted here, our chance of sneaking out with you had expired," Fig continued. "You have to buy us some time so we can leave unscathed. After all, Deborah and Hunter were heavily injured. She simply wanted to help you out of here, regardless of the risk."

"I understand." Hera nodded.

"We’ll be back."

Hera’s brows rose, looking at Fig in surprise.

"I can kill Dragon, but with Ram around, I don’t think it’ll be easy." Fig kept his gaze on Hera as he stressed his next words. "You and that guy Leo should be prepared to escape at all times. Right now, we’ll have to retreat. Can you find a way to divert their attention without raising suspicions?"

The corner of Hera’s lips stretched in confidence as she nodded. "Leave it to me. I’m quite talented in that area."
