Chapter 863: Tonight is the only time.

"Should I take these heels off and wear them when I’m close to the greenhouse?" Hera wondered in the middle of her walk. She stopped and gazed down, only to shake her head. "I can’t do that and risk sullying Hera’s reputation."

Just as Hera decided and took a step forward, she heard some rustling around her. She froze, her guard at an all-time high. Looking around, all she could see were some bushes on either side of the pathway.

"Who’s there?" she raised her voice, wary of her surroundings. But alas, the silence was all she heard.

’Is it just the wind?’she wondered as a cold breeze brushed past her shoulders. ’I guess I’m just imagining it.’

Hera shook her head once more and continued her walk. Even so, she still instinctively kept her guard up, in case she wasn’t imagining it. One thing she learned from the original Hera was to always listen to her instincts.

’If someone is here... then, I’d be in trouble,’ she thought, lacking in confidence to fend for herself despite the skills she was borrowing from Hera. After all, her confidence was already squashed down after her first escape attempt. Dragon surely knew how to make one submit.

Her every step was light and cautious, even her breath was controlled. Hera kept her eyes on the path ahead, but all her senses were focused on any lurking dangers in the dark. After another thirty seconds, Hera let out a deep exhale.

I guess it’s really just the wind,’ she thought, patting her chest as she didn’t feel like there was truly someone around. Looking ahead, she huffed and marched with confidence.

What she didn’t know was that someone was hiding behind the tall shrub she was approaching. She only realized that when a hand suddenly grabbed her arm as she passed by it.

Thanks to Hera’s fast reflexes, upon feeling the force of the hand pulling her, she instinctively flung her arms. Circling her hand around the person, she twisted the person’s hand on his back with her other arm wrapped around the person’s neck.

"Who are you?!" Hera breathed out, her heart racing, still baffled how could this body move on its own before she could even think of a way to do that for herself?

"Hera — ugh! It’s me!"

"Huh?" Hera furrowed her brows and looked at the person’s side. "Deb?"

"Yes! It’s me!" Deborah breathed out, teeth clenched. "Please... ugh... it hurts."

"Ah." Hera instinctively released Deborah from her grip, taking a step back. As Deborah turned around with great difficulty, she assessed her from dead to toe. "Deborah, what are you doing here? I mean, why do you look like that?"

Despite Deborah’s oversized, black hooded jacket, Hera could still see how drained and exhausted Deborah appeared. The latter’s complexion was pale and the bags under her eyes were darker than ever. There were even bruises and scratches on her face, and her lips were still swollen.

It was as though Deborah was hovering over life and death.

"I got caught," Deborah breathed out, grabbing Hera’s arm to keep her balance. "That day you told me to escape, I was caught that night."

"What?" Hera gasped as her eyes shook. "Don’t tell me you ratted me out?"

A look of dismay shone in Deborah’s eyes at Hera’s question. "Surely, you’re selfish."

"I have to know these things, so I know which card still has its uses."

"Don’t worry." Deborah breathed out and closed her eyes momentarily. "Even if you’re like that, I didn’t say anything. Or rather, he didn’t even ask anything."

Deborah gazed down as she added bitterly. "He simply sent us to the torture house without questioning."

"The torture house..." Hera murmured and breathed out, imagining what Deborah went through. She then furrowed her brows as she looked back at Deborah. "If you were caught, what are you doing here?"

"It’s a long story, but we managed to escape."

"We?"

"Hunter." Deborah nodded slightly. "The one who drove you in here."

Hera’s eyes dilated slightly, now realizing why the driver’s voice sounded familiar. However, she didn’t dwell on it as she refocused her attention on Deborah. Her face crumpled and this time, she held Deborah’s shoulders.

"If you escaped already, why did you come back?!" she asked through her gritted teeth. "Do you really not value your life anymore, Deborah? If you came back for revenge, haven’t you realized that you’re no match and just wasting your life away? I think your sister would prefer it if you just run away!"

Deborah’s face slightly relaxed, studying the angry look on Hera’s face. She didn’t realize it before, but this same expression was the same one she was wearing when Deborah snuck into this place for the first time.

"I just thought I should come back and let you know about it," Deborah said as she let out a deep exhale.

"I already know about it, Deborah," Hera replied. "I don’t think it’s good you’re caught early on, but Ram is in Dragon’s hands."

"I know that."

"Huh?"

"Ram is the person why we’re caught in the first place."

Hera held her breath upon hearing this information. At the back of her head, she was relieved she didn’t risk asking for Ram’s help. If she did, she could already imagine the worst.

"There’s also another reason, Hera." Suddenly, Deborah grabbed Hera’s hand, looking at her straight in the eye. "Hera, you have to come with me."

"What? Where?"

"It’s no longer safe in here."

This place was never safe in the first place.

Hera pressed her lips into a thin line, acknowledging the sincerity in Deborah’s eyes. "Deborah..."

"Things will be very bad soon, Hera. Dragon attacked Dimitri, and for sure, Dimitri will retaliate," Deborah summarized the situation outside. "This banquet? It’s only for show, but the real meaning behind it is for Dragon to show his forces."

"What..."

"Going there will only solidify his power because most of his strongest men were once yours." Deborah squeezed Hera’s arm. "You didn’t lose your memory, so I’m sure you already know that."

She paused to take a breath, looking at Hera while nodding. "It’ll be a bloody war soon and knowing Dimitri, you’re the first person he’ll kill. If we’re going to escape, tonight is the only time."
