Chapter 859: Staring at a monster

"Mr. Zhang, where is this place? Are you okay?"

Dane blinked ever so slowly as he shifted his gaze to where the voice came from. Ivy was still in the last step of the stairs, looking at him with eyes full of uncertainty and determination.

"In my home," he answered, causing creases on her forehead.

"Your home?" Ivy repeated, looking around the surroundings. "This is yours? Not Dominic?"

"Dominic Zhu won’t buy something like this. I thought you’d know that by now."

"Uhm..." she cleared her throat and rocked her head. "It already crossed my mind, but I didn’t expect that you’d own this place."

She didn’t know exactly Dane’s payslip, but considering his position in the Lyon Group, she was certain he was paid justly. However, even if Ivy exaggerated Dane’s earnings, she didn’t think he would be able to afford a castle. Unless this castle was sold cheap or Dane hadn’t spent a dime since working for Dominic, that was the only way he could afford such.

"Miss Wei, you should rest more." Dane’s calm voice brought her back to the current lapse, looking back at his vantage point on instinct. He slowly rose from his seat, eyes still on her. "Or are you hungry?"

Ivy huffed as her expression turned solemn. "I don’t think I have the time or appetite to eat anything at the moment, Mr. Zhang. Have you contacted Dom?"

"No."

"Why?" Ivy took the last step, a little baffled. "Mr. Zhang, at this point, shouldn’t we contact Dom and tell him what happened? We were attacked! Thinking about it, he might have been attacked as well. We have to coordinate with him and the authorities to catch—"

As Ivy was speaking her mind about the matter, she trailed off and furrowed her brows. She assessed Dane once more, now noticing how oddly calm he was.

"Mr. Zhang," she called in a tone of disbelief. "Why are you... looking at me like that?"

Dane took a deep breath, propping his jaw against his knuckles. His eyes drooped a little, giving him an entirely different look than what he usually wears in the past.

"Dimitri," he said, making her furrow her brows. "That’s my name, not Dane Zhang."

"What?"

"You asked me before why I kept rejecting you," he continued in the same calm yet cold tone. "That’s the reason. I am not Dane Zhang and not the man you fell in love with."

The lines between her brows deepened even more, puzzled at everything he spewed just now. Was she dumb? How could she not understand this simple explanation?

"I don’t... understand." Her voice shook as her breaths grew heavy. "What are you saying now, Mr. Zhang? If you’re joking, then I’m telling you it’s not funny! We have a more pressing matter to —"

"I’ll handle it, so don’t worry," he answered even before he could hear her complete sentence. "For now, it’s best for you to rest and adjust to the time in this place."

"Huh?"

"Right. You didn’t know." Dane nodded in understanding. "You were unconscious for over ten hours. So, you didn’t know we’re in Sorrento."

"So — Sorrento?" Ivy looked down as she pondered where she heard that place. When she realized which part of the world she was, she snapped her eyes back to him. "What did you say?! Where are we? I mean, what are we here?!"

This time, Dane didn’t give her the answer she sought. He simply looked at her, letting her realize it on her own. Seeing the look in his eyes, Ivy instinctively took a step back. He mentioned that she was unconscious for almost half a day. No wonder it still looked close to evening in this place when it should’ve been late at night if she had been unconscious for that long.

"Who... who are you?" Her voice shook, now wary of him.

"I just told you, Ivy Wei," Dane replied coldly. "It’s Dimitri. I’d appreciate it if you start calling me by that name instead of Dane Zhang. I do not have a reason to play the role anymore. And even if I do, Dominic might’ve caught on already."

A bitter smile turned up on his face as he let out a ridiculing chuckle, eyes down. "That old man is there with him, after all. Even if Dominic didn’t catch on, Bernard Gambone would explain it to him. Surely, that guy has some luck in this life. I wonder if he saved the world in his previous life that he was blessed with such luck?"

"Don’t you think so, Ivy?" he added, lifting his eyes back to Ivy. "Dominic Zhu is such a lucky fellow, isn’t he?"

Ivy took another step back, holding her hand close to her chest. Her eyes shook, studying the sinister smirk plastered on Dane’s face. At this point, she was certain she wasn’t seeing things. There was something different with him. It was as though some old, evil spirit possessed him.

"You..." she stuttered, reaching for the railing with her hand, ready to run away as fast as she could at a moment’s notice. Myriads of thoughts swirled in her mind, but none of them successfully came out of her throat. All she could do was stare at him with shaky eyes.

"What do you want from Dom?" she blurted out, earning a knowing smirk from Dane.

"To be honest? Nothing." Dane shrugged. "There’s nothing that man could offer to sway my heart, Miss Wei. I simply acted as his loyal assistant because having a career is much better. Moreover, using his connection to find someone I was looking for. It wouldn’t raise suspicion if I acted that way."

He lifted his foot and rested it over the other, looking away lazily. "Moreover, it was fun to watch someone like him struggle because of a woman. If only that woman didn’t spoil my fun and those people didn’t appear one after another, this probably wouldn’t happen."

"Or maybe it would," he continued, considering the situation he was in. "After all, that damn pawn thinks he’s some big shot just because I gave him an important task. Surely, this world is full of greed."

Looking back at her slowly, Dane arched a brow. "What, Miss Wei? What’s with that look? Are you surprised I could speak the way I do? Why, though? Tiger’s way of speaking is way worse — it’s tackless in every form, yet you still fell for him."

"So..." he paused as a glint flickered across his sharp eyes. "... I don’t understand why you’re looking at me as if you’re staring at a monster."
