Chapter 854: Good work, Axel.
"All we found were the enemies. All of them are dead."
"Ah, shit." Moose buried his face in his palms, feeling a little overwhelmed by this additional information. "Of all the people that could be dragged into this fiasco, why did it have to be her?"
"One good thing about this is that we’ve now figured out that Dane had fooled all of us." Although Bear shared Moose’s feelings, he remained composed. "If he could deal with all those people alone, then that means he had been acting cowardly and foolish by choice."
"Are you okay?" Unlike their concerns, Heaven turned to Dominic. "That Dane turned out to be the guy I thought he was."
"I can’t articulate my feelings about it, but it’s surely unpleasant," Dominic sighed. "I should’ve seen through him from the beginning."
"Don’t blame yourself," Bear consoled. "If he was able to fool all of us, who’ve been in this line of work for years, then it’s only natural that you wouldn’t see through him. So, don’t blame yourself. It’s not like it will resolve the matter as well."
"I know that..." Dominic trailed off, feeling a vibration in his chest. "Wait a second. I’ll just turn this off."
Dominic slipped his hand into his suit pocket and checked the caller. When he saw Axel’s name, he was about to end the call, assuming Axel would just whine again. However, just as his thumb hovered over the red button, he changed his mind.
"What?" the moment he answered the call, Dominic didn’t beat around the bush. "Get to the point in ten seconds. If I find it nonsense, I’ll hang up."
Dominic arched a brow as he listened to Axel on the line. As Axel spoke, he cast a glance at everyone and then ended the call.
"We have to go," he announced, standing up immediately. "Tiger is in the hospital."
"Shit! My billion!" Moose hopped from his seat and gasped. "What happened?!"
*********
"That man, Axel, the man we know as Dane Zhang isn’t Dane. His real name is Dimitri. He’s a mob psycho, and right now, Ivy is with him. Do you understand now?!"
All the information Tiger revealed was difficult for Axel to process. Dane had been his brother’s trusted assistant and a part of their family. Axel had known Dane longer than Tiger, Heaven, or many others who entered his life. Tiger’s words just didn’t add up.
But still...
"Fine," Axel exhaled, tapping Tiger’s grip on his collar. "Let me go. We’ll find her for you and make sure she’s okay."
Tiger scrutinized Axel’s eyes before releasing his hold. As soon as Tiger let go, Axel’s feet met the concrete ground once more.
"Put that down," Axel instructed the driver, adjusting his suit. "He won’t hurt me."
The driver assessed Axel and then glared at Tiger. Despite this, he complied with Axel’s command and slowly lowered his gun.
"Let’s go." After his driver acquiesced, Axel turned to face Tiger again. "I won’t ask about your injuries anymore since you have the strength to throw Lester like he’s a doll. Follow me."
Before departing, Axel turned to his driver once more. "Take Lester to the infirmary."
"Sir..." Lester grunted, clutching his rib and feeling as if the crash had left him with a broken bone.
"I’ll be fine," Axel reassured, redirecting his attention to the driver and nodding.
With those instructions given, Axel glanced at Tiger once more before heading toward the elevator. Fortunately, Axel had learned to confront his fears and began using the underground parking space. Otherwise, he could imagine the chaos if this had occurred in the lobby.
"Just so you know, Tiger, I know we were supposedly besties. But I didn’t appreciate how you acted just now. I’m sure my back was bruised by your assault—"
THUD!
Axel stopped speaking abruptly at the sound of a loud thud behind him. Turning around, he furrowed his brows as Tiger suddenly vanished.
"Huh? Where did he..." Slowly, Axel’s gaze lowered. His eyes widened the moment he spotted Tiger on the ground, face-first. "Tiger!"
********
"So, that’s what happened," Axel sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he recounted the events to his brother and sister-in-law. "I knew he was in a terrible state, but he didn’t seem to care about that. So, I thought it wasn’t as bad as it appeared. But it seems I was wrong. Sorry."
"You don’t have to apologize for that," Dominic reassured, reaching out and placing his hand on his brother’s shoulder. "I’m glad you called us the moment you rushed him to the hospital."
Heaven and Bear stood behind Dominic, exchanging glances. "Bear, visit the secret floor and find Ivy. Or at least, locate the last place she was seen. I don’t think Joker would respond at this time."
"Understood," Bear began a neck bow to carry out the order but paused when Axel spoke up.
"I’ve already instructed my people to find her," Axel informed, capturing everyone’s attention. "Tiger went to the company despite his injuries for her. So, before I contacted you, I had already given orders to locate her."
Bear was taken aback by Axel’s clear-headedness in this crisis. Axel had not only rushed Tiger to the hospital and informed his brother but had also acted swiftly on Tiger’s request.
"I want to applaud," Bear murmured under his breath.
"Save that for a time when I’m feeling glorified," Axel retorted, turning his gaze first to Heaven and then to Dominic. "I don’t think she’s still in the country. The last sighting of her was in a building in Musk Town."
"Musk Town?" Heaven furrowed her brows. "That’s only thirty minutes away."
"That building has a helipad," Axel revealed, his heart sinking.
"Bear, call the watchtower—"
"I’ve already done that," Axel interjected his brother, almost startling the three this time. "From their route, it seems they were headed to Sorrento. That’s almost five thousand miles away. We won’t reach them in thirty minutes. But I’ve dispatched a team to scout the area and track them down."
This time, Bear clapped slowly, impressed by Axel’s swift actions and preparedness. Heaven, with teary eyes, covered her lips with her fingers. Meanwhile, Dominic couldn’t help but smile in pride. Axel had certainly made everyone proud today.
Dominic patted his brother’s shoulder, nodding approvingly. "Great work, Axel."
