Chapter 852: All of them are dead
"It appears that Ram took Dragon’s side and is now an enemy of ours. We need to find a way to approach Dragon now that that old fella is on his side. We all know how tricky it is to deal with him."
The room fell silent at Moose’s words, each person wearing a solemn expression. Ram’s attack was a clear declaration of enmity, complicating matters further. Knowing Ram and then Dragon, things just became more complicated than they already were.
"But why would he target Dom?" the first person to break the silence was Bear, scanning everyone’s faces. "Attacking Dom seems unjustified. No One might make sense; that guy’s existence is revolting. But Dom? His candidacy or connection isn’t enough reason for Ram or Dragon to attack him."
"That’s right." Moose nodded in agreement, sinking comfortably in his chair. Crossing his arms under his chest and resting his leg over the other, he hummed a long tune. "It’s puzzling that they attacked Dominic out of nowhere. I can’t say he’s a magnet for trouble since the enemy we’re talking about isn’t as nonsense as No One."
The room quietened, a collective question mark hanging in the air.
"Unless their target is someone else." After a moment, Dominic spoke his thoughts aloud. "Someone... around me."
"Do you think they’re originally targeting Bear?" Moose arched a brow, but this time, Heaven spoke her mind.
"If Ram sent people to kill Bernard, he won’t simply send a few people," she remarked, eyes scanning everyone around. "We all know Ram. If he wants to kill Bear, he will come himself to do the job. After all, sending anyone else guarantees a failure."
"I agree with her. Unless he truly doesn’t want to kill me." Bear nodded.
But then Moose argued, "Or he’s diverting Bear’s attention."
"That makes no sense," Dominic commented. "If he wants to divert Bear’s attention, everyone should be part of his ploy."
"Damn!" Moose hissed, massaging his temple as his frustration mounting. "Just what the hell do they want?"
Dominic drew a deep breath and turned to the woman beside him. He pressed his lips together and then set his eyes on Bear.
"Mr. Cruel, I am not sure about this. So, I would like to hear your thoughts about it. Have you noticed the people who were after us earlier?" Dominic inquired solemnly.
"What about them?" Moose arched a brow, intrigued.
"I found it strange as well." Bear leaned forward, hands linked together, his arms resting on his legs. "It’s like the enemies earlier were simply forced to face us."
"In the middle of the chase and the shootout, many of those after us retreated," Dominic explained to Moose and Heaven. "However, since we’re already in the middle of the fight, not many of them could get away. Even so, if they were truly after us, they wouldn’t simply retreat without gaining anything."
He lowered his eyes, swallowing the tension in his throat. "I don’t think they were after me or Mister Cruel."
"Then who are they..." Moose trailed off as he suddenly furrowed his brows, as if realization struck him.
"Dane Zhang," Heaven whispered, snapping her eyes up to them. "Aside from Dominic and Bear, there’s also another person with them."
"I thought so too." Dominic nodded. "If we think of it like this, it makes sense that when they found out Dane isn’t with us, they retreated to go where he is"
"Holy — why would Ram target him!?" Moose gasped, only to see Heaven and Dominic looking at each other.
Bear, on the other hand, let out a deep exhale. "Tiger had been investigating Dane Zhang behind the scenes," he explained, keeping it short and simple.
"Huh?" Moose scrunched up his nose. "Why? I mean, am I the only person who doesn’t know about this?"
"You were busy playing golf with the board of directors and putting all your resources into protecting Miss Wei for the prize money." Bear’s tone had a tinge of sarcasm, causing Moose’s expression to turn ugly.
"My wife had been questioning Dane’s loyalty since the beginning." This time, Dominic explained, since Bear was choosing sarcasm toward Moose. "It all started at that time No One, whom we all knew at that time as Primo Rossi, came into the picture."
Dominic summarized on what ground Dane was being investigated by Tiger. Meanwhile, Moose listened. The more he did, the deeper the lines on his forehead.
"That does sound suspicious," Moose muttered, wiping the corner of his lips with his thumb and middle finger. "I knew it. That guy is suspicious from the get-go."
"We all found him suspicious. If not, incompetent." Bear nodded, recalling his initial impression of Dane Zhang after "saving" Heaven from Andrea Ng.
"Even when Silas got in the way, it could’ve been prevented if Dane told him about his cousin," Bear added, setting his eyes on Dominic. "But all of that was mere speculation... until recently, Mr. Zhang had been acting strangely. Especially when Dom started showing him distrust."
"Maybe he was hurt?" Moose guessed just in case they had to consider that possibility. "I hate to say this, but jumping to conclusions and turning to each other might be what our enemy wants. Mr. Zhang could be innocent. I mean, he worked for Boss Zhu longer than us. So, seeing that Boss Zhu is doubting him can be disheartening. Moreover, he doesn’t look much of a threat to me."
Bear shook his head.
"I don’t claim that I am right, but with my years of experience, I trust my gut and what I see." He held Moose’s gaze, and then slowly moved them to the couple across from him. "Mr. Zhu."
Dominic sighed faintly after Bear’s call. "From what I can tell, Dane wasn’t acting disheartened because I doubted him. It’s more like... he was curious about where I got the idea."
"Huh?" Moose frowned, brows furrowed.
"Exactly." Bear nodded. "Mr. Zhang was acting as if he was more curious to know how he was being doubted. Normally, innocent people would wonder about the ’whys.’ Unless you’re not. You should know that Moose, considering you once took on a mission and changed identity. What would you do if someone found out about your disguise?"
Moose lowered his eyes. If they put it that way, Dane’s innocence was completely ruled out. "I’d ask the same question to know how or where I slipped up. So, I can avoid it next time." His answer escaped his lips before he could even think about it. Moose then looked up at Heaven and asked,
"Where’s Tiger?"
"I lost contact with him hours ago. His status is still unknown." Heaven, who had been quiet the whole time, glanced at them. "But we have a bigger problem."
"What the hell is it this time?" Moose hissed, annoyed at the problems that had come to them in one go. Couldn’t they come one after another?
"Miss Wei," Dominic remarked under his breath. "She was with Dane earlier. Bear and I checked the area where they could be, but alas..."
"What?" Moose breathed out, his heart almost thudding.
Bear lowered his head. "All we found were the enemies. All of them are dead."
Moose threw his hands, lips parted as he breathed out heavily. Meanwhile, Heaven’s expression turned dark as she lowered her head slightly. The room fell into silence as the tension hung in the air.
