Chapter 841: Man down!
"Ugh!!!" Primo grunted, sliding on the ground before quickly taking cover behind a nearby tree. Clenching his teeth, he gripped his injured shoulder, a curse escaping him as he saw blood seeping through his fingers.
Someone got him.
"Shit!" he cursed again, flinching at the sound of gunfire echoing through the dense forest.
Another bullet hit the tree, prompting him to glance at the smoke billowing from the impact. Primo had been desperately evading those chasing him, but no matter how successful he was, new threats would emerge incessantly.
There seemed to be no end to them, and now they managed to injure him.
’They’re going to kill me for sure,’ he thought, panting heavily. ’She said she’d pick me up — is she still alive?’
Heaven might be alive. Or she might have fled. Who knew?
"Whatever!" he breathed out, shaking his head to dispel unnecessary thoughts. Right now, Primo could only rely on himself. Relying on Heaven was a mistake. Or rather, he knew it was a mistake, but so was everything about him.
"I can’t keep going like this," he whispered, closing his eyes to steady himself. When he opened them, he took a deep breath.
Glancing down at his injury, he hurriedly removed his shirt. Not having plenty of time to tear it, he wrapped it around his bleeding biceps, biting the hem and pulling to tighten the makeshift bandage. Satisfied it would suffice for now, he adjusted his bag strap and leaped up.
"Running... seems to be my forte," he murmured, almost blending into the tree. He glanced over his shoulder, ears alert to the cautious rustling approaching.
’But just running without anything isn’t.’
Primo held his breath, awaiting someone’s appearance. After what felt like an eternity, he caught sight of a gun muzzle as a figure approached his hiding spot. In one swift motion, he lunged forward, seizing the rifle’s body.
Without hesitation, he disarmed the enemy with powerful strikes. When he finally wrested the rifle away, he aimed it at the person and fired.
BANG!
A loud thud instantly followed the echoing bang, only to hear another continuous shot from somewhere. Primo instinctively jumped to another tree, focusing on the direction where the shots were coming from. As another shot rang out, he retaliated, firing back.
"Tch!" He clicked his tongue in frustration, aware he had missed. However, he didn’t linger to confirm his opponent’s status. Instead, he turned and sprinted as fast as he could. Earlier, he had been merely running; now, armed, he might buy more time or save himself from this debacle.
With that in mind, Primo darted through the forest. Luckily, he had explored the area shortly after arriving at the cabin, giving him a rough sense of his current location.
*******
"Man down!" crackled a voice from the soldiers’ radio sets. "The target is now armed! I repeat, the target is now armed."
Voices filled the airwaves, some reporting his potential whereabouts, while others provided a layout of the forest to prevent losing him. Unbeknownst to them, one of the radios had fallen into different hands. Someone who could highly spoil their mission.
"These people..." Heaven muttered, perched on a fallen enemy’s back whom she had silently subdued moments ago. "He really ordered his execution. Oh, gracious Ram. Why are you giving me a headache now?"
She stretched her neck in a circular motion, eyes shut. When she ran her fingers through her hair, her brows slightly arched as she glanced at the ends of her hair.
"This is so bothersome," she murmured, tying her hair up so it wouldn’t get in the way. After tying her hair, she tucked the radio inside the pocket of her black leather jacket. She then picked up the corpse’s weapons, holding the rifle in her right hand while letting the weapon she brought with her cling around her body.
Ready, she retrieved the radio, bringing it closer to her ear to eavesdrop on the conversation. Bending beside the downed figure, she unfolded a map she had previously disregarded, tracing Primo’s potential location with her finger.
"Where is he headed?" she wondered softly, circling the area where Primo was last spotted. Her gaze scanned the surroundings. "He’s moving away from the exit."
The area where Primo was last seen was leading him to the end of the forest. What lay in that area was nothing but steep hillsides. If he climbed it, then he would reach a cliff. There were no exits in that area. In other words, Primo was rushing toward a dead end.
"That fool..." She sighed, folding the map and slipping it into her jacket. "But I suppose the time he’s spent here hasn’t been enough for him to explore this place thoroughly."
Heaven shook her head and was about to take a step, only to stop. She arched a brow, catching a figure from the corner of her eyes. Turning to see, she furrowed her brows the second she locked eyes with a soldier. The soldier stopped in one spot, rifle aimed at her, his eyes revealed curiosity.
"Who are you?!" the soldier asked in an authoritative tone.
Heaven raised a hand with the rifle still in one of them. Seeing that she was holding the same type of weapon as him, the soldier glanced down at her feet. His pupils instantly went wide at the body behind her.
"You —"
BANG!
Her gaze lowered as the other soldier collapsed with a hole in his throat. She exhaled deeply, dropping her hand and turning away from the fallen soldier, heading toward the motorcycle she had ridden to this location.
"I’m sorry," she whispered as she mounted the motorcycle a few meters from the bodies. She had only arrived around five minutes ago, but the number of casualties had already grown. For sure, if this kept up, the numbers would only grow.
"Believe me or not, I didn’t want to get back into this kind of life. But people just wouldn’t leave me alone."
Heaven revved up her motorcycle, tearing her gaze away from the fallen soldiers. She swallowed hard, as if suppressing any unnecessary emotions rising in her throat. Then, in an instant, her eyes sharpened, glinting with determination as she sped along the rocky path, aiming to reach Primo before anyone else could.
