Chapter 837: Just a fluke
Meanwhile...
"Isn’t that nice?" Moose raised a hand over his brows, checking where the golf ball reached. He whistled as the corner of his mouth curled, sliding his eyes to the other person in their small group.
"I guess it’s a win," he said, making Axel narrow his eyes. "Lucky me!"
"I don’t think it’s mere luck. Mr. M is truly a talented man, don’t you think?" Axel remarked, snapping his eyes at other members of the board with them. "Isn’t that right?"
His remark elicited words of praise for the most popular man on the board. They clapped and laughed while Moose accepted all praises with a wide smile.
"Everyone is too generous with their words —" Moose halted as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. Checking the caller, his smile remained, casting everyone a look. "I’ll take this call. Please proceed without me."
Axel glanced at Moose’s hand and smiled. Turning to the members of the board, his smile stretched.
"Since Mr. M is skipping the next round, let’s see who’s the second best after him?" he joked, earning a chuckle from the older gentlemen. His remark also fueled their determination to determine the second-best in the group.
With that, Moose walked away from the group to answer the call. As he did so, Axel couldn’t help but glance at him, wondering about the nature of the call for the man to change expression briefly.
"Ah, yes?" After distancing himself, Moose leisurely answered the phone call. "What can this young, intelligent, and capable man do for the chief of Central Intelligence?"
Wolf, on the other end of the line, didn’t reciprocate the banter as usual. "Bear is under attack."
"Huh?"
"Dominic is with him."
Deep lines immediately appeared between Moose’s brows.
"You should go," Wolf added solemnly.
"Did she know about it?" Moose asked, glancing at the group from a distance.
"Yes. I just got off a call with her," Wolf explained concisely. "Get Alexander Cafre for me."
"Hmm..." Instead of showing urgency, Moose hesitated. "Before I go, where is she?"
"On her way to Alexander Cafre."
"If she’s going there, why am I needed there?"
"Moose." Wolf’s tone dropped at the lack of urgency in Moose’s voice. "Are you planning to hold me on the line and waste time?"
"Everyone’s probably on the move if she’s on the move. Therefore, no one’s wasting time."
"You are, right now."
"Wolf, I’m not wasting time. I simply do not want to rush headlong, only for my neck to end up on a chopping board."
A moment of silence ensued as neither of them spoke after Moose’s remarks. After a few seconds, Wolf exhaled deeply as he leaned back against his chair.
"Tiger cannot be reached," was Wolf’s first explanation for his urgency. "Joker is on the run, and Fig is out of the country, looking after a woman named Deborah. Bear and Dominic are under attack. Gray and Princess had to stay with her children."
Wolf summarized everyone’s situation while massaging his temples. "We lack manpower at the moment. Even if I believe Bear and Dominic will be fine, don’t forget Dragon is also on the move."
"I see." Moose nodded in understanding. "So, Dragon finally decides to wipe everyone out, huh?"
"It’s not him."
"Huh?"
"Dragon had no reason to attack Dominic yet."
Moose furrowed his brows, glancing at his phone before returning it to his ear. "What do you mean by that? If not him, then who else would do this?"
"It’s Ram."
"Ram?"
Wolf took a deep breath and exhaled quietly. He leaned closer to his desk, his gaze sharpening.
"The one attacking Bear and Dominic is Ram. I confirmed this just now," Wolf emphasized quietly. "We don’t know his reason for attacking Dominic, but what I do know is that he won’t let off Alexander Cafre. After all, she put that man in this spot. He was her scapegoat. Do you now understand that, Moose? Dragon still needs many years to alarm me, but Ram... is different."
Another moment of silence dominated the line as Moose absorbed the information thrown at him. He sighed, glancing back at the group.
"Send a chopper to the cabin," Moose said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "That old man will find him for sure."
"That’s why I called."
"Anything else I need to know?"
Another wave of silence reigned before Wolf spoke again. "Stop her at all costs."
"Why?" Moose raised an eyebrow. "Are you worried she’d kill the old man? Don’t worry. Ram is about to kick the bucket, so even if he dies, it’s not so bad. He’s lived a long life."
"That’s not it." Wolf shook his head. "It’s just my hunch."
"What does your hunch tell you?"
"She shouldn’t get too involved." Wolf slowly lifted his gaze to the monitor in front of him, showing a paused clip of Hera’s recent video that spread in the underground. "I don’t know for sure, but a part of me tells me things might get even more complicated with her in the picture."
"I see."
"So, stop her at all costs." Wolf looked away from the monitor. "I’m sending a chopper to the cabin. Make sure to be there in less than an hour. The pilot won’t wait for you."
"Got it."
With that said, Moose ended the call and walked away without looking back or bidding farewell to the group, aware that time was running out. Meanwhile, Axel and the group busied themselves with their activity.
"Oh, CEO Zhu!" an old man in the group clapped. "Are you giving us a chance? You don’t play like this whenever Mr. M is with us."
"It’s just a fluke," Axel chuckled, joining in their laughter.
"A fluke? You must be very lucky to win three consecutive rounds!"
"Haha!" Axel chuckled, already accustomed to exchanging pleasantries with these men. "Mr. M will be disheartened if he hears about this."
Turning his head to where Moose stood earlier, Axel furrowed his brows. "Huh?" he murmured, making the men look in the same direction. Scanning around, Axel blurted out, "Where did he go?"
