Chapter 835: Leaving the children

"Don’t worry. You don’t have to come here, though I’m concerned about something. Ivy is with Dane. I’ll fill you in on the details later."

"Is that so?" Heaven bit her bottom lip as she lowered her head. "Alright. If you say you’re okay, I trust you. I’d like to hear more details in person later."

She emphasized the last part, earning a hum from Dominic before ending the call. Knowing her husband had other matters to attend to, Heaven lingered briefly before forcing a smile and heading back to the garden table.

"Was that Dom?" Ria, seated nearby, asked.

"Yes," Heaven replied, taking her place at the table with her in-laws.

"Is he alright?" Lionel inquired curiously.

"He’s fine." Heaven turned to her father-in-law. "He was on his last campaign on the border of Cake County. He mentioned everything went smoothly."

"That’s a relief." Lionel smiled, relieved, while Ria held his hand. "It’s been a while since I last saw him. Dominic and Axel. Even when their grandma wasn’t well, they wouldn’t come. I understand, but it’s difficult."

Bitterness flashed in Lionel’s eyes, thinking of how distant his sons had been since the anniversary night. Though he understood, he couldn’t help longing for them.

"Time will heal our hearts," Ria said, nodding at her husband. "Let’s give them some space."

"I don’t think Mom has much time, darling."

Ria’s smile faded as she lowered her eyes, unable to respond. Meanwhile, Heaven observed her in-laws. Ever since Silas was arrested, and they moved, Dominic and Axel hadn’t stayed in touch with their parents. Though sometimes they were concerned, they didn’t rush to Grandma Zhu, even if she fell ill. Yet, they still asked about her condition whenever it occurred.

Things had been different since that night. At least, it had been different with her in-laws.

"I’m sorry I can’t do anything," Heaven said sincerely. "I’ve tried talking to Dom and Axel, but I can’t force them to pretend everything is okay. What happened wasn’t fine."

Her in-laws smiled bitterly. "Don’t worry, Heaven. We know that and we also know it affects you too."

Not really.

"I’m sure they’ll come around," she reassured, despite her doubts. "I’ll try talking to them again."

"It’s okay, Heaven." This time, Lionel shook his head. "Forcing them will only push them away. We miss them — I miss the children. But we can’t force things to happen, especially when it was our fault in the beginning. We’ve failed them; we’ve failed Silas as well. I’m just grateful you brought the kids here."

Heaven smiled, relieved. "The kids aren’t involved in the adults’ issues. They shouldn’t be. Moreover, Dom didn’t say he forbids you to visit the kids. We’ve just been busy, so we couldn’t initiate."

"That’s alright, Heaven. Bringing them here today is already a good thing for us," Ria expressed. "Are you going somewhere?"

"Yes," Heaven nodded. "The election is approaching, and we might get busier. Could you look after them for a while?"

"Of course!" Ria reassured. "If you’re busy, we can take care of them. After all, we have nothing else to do."

"That’s right," Lionel added. "We used to take Basti on our trips and he often spends weekends with us. It’s more than okay to have them here."

Heaven smiled gratefully. "Thank you."

"Why thank us?" Ria chuckled. "Sebastian and Miracle are our grandchildren. We love them as much as our own children... and you."

"Take your time," Lionel insisted. "Go on a honeymoon with Dom if you want. You both have been working hard, so take a break if you need to."

Heaven chuckled, touched by their kindness. "I still want to thank you. Having you around whom I know loves my children just as much I love them is reassuring."

"We’re family." Ria held her husband’s hand again, looking at him knowingly. "And we learned our lesson. Although it was a little late, we want to correct our mistakes through them."

Heaven maintained a smile as she held her in-law’s gaze. "Then I’ll say goodbye to them."

"Sure."

With that, Heaven rose from her seat. Ria and Lionel walked her in. The couple stood by the family room entrance to give Heaven and her children some privacy and space.

"Basti." Heaven sat beside Sebastian on the long and wide couch.

As usual, Sebastian was engrossed in a book his father had bought. Miriam held the baby Miracle nearby. He turned his head, brows raised, blinking.

"Sweetheart, I’ll leave you with Grandma and Grandpa for now, alright?" she smiled, looking at Sebastian. "Will you be okay?"

Sebastian smiled understandingly. "Yes! I miss Grandma and Grandpa, so I want to stay here!"

"That’s good, then."

"Are you going somewhere far, Mommy?" he asked.

"Just a little," she replied, pinching the air between them. "But I’ll be back soon. Be good, okay?" Heaven stroked his hair affectionately. "Listen to Grandma and Grandpa while I’m away."

Sebastian’s smile dimmed slightly.

"Mommy?" he called. "Will you pick us up when you return?"

"Of course."

"Promise?" Sebastian extended his pinky.

Heaven chuckled, linking her pinky with his. She leaned in and touched her forehead with his. "Don’t worry, Basti. I’ll be back soon. Just wait for me, okay?"

Pulling back, she saw a bright smile on his face.

"I promise!" he exclaimed. "I’ll take care of Miri until you’re back."

"That’s my boy." Her heart warmed as she ruffled his hair. After speaking to Sebastian, Heaven turned to Miriam. She smiled at her and Miriam smiled back. Without a word, Miriam carefully transferred the adorable and chubby Miracle to her mother’s embrace.

"Miracle," Heaven whispered, hugging her cute baby girl, who was like a giant bun. "I’ll miss you and your brother."

Although she was certain she would return, the thought of being separated left a hole in her heart. Still, it was necessary.

There was no other way.

"Love you both." Heaven placed a peck on her daughter’s head, keeping her in her embrace. She idled in the family for a while and then gave Miracle back to Miriam. She then bid her in-law farewell before walking out of the mansion, ready to end everything once and for all.
