Chapter 834: Under attack
"Dane Zhang. How are you so calm?"
Ivy furrowed her brows, studying Dane’s profile intently. Amidst the chaos earlier, she hadn’t noticed it, but now it was clear: Dane remained oddly composed. Recalling the anniversary event, she realized Dane had shown the same fear she had.
Both of them were like fools, screaming their lungs out, while Tiger was protecting them. But now, Dane exhibited no trace of fear, his demeanor changed. Though she couldn’t pinpoint it, she knew this wasn’t the Dane Zhang she knew.
"It doesn’t matter—" His words were interrupted by more gunfire. "We need to lose them. They’ll target the tires; they’re not bulletproof."
His statement highlighted their immediate danger. They were still under attack by an unknown force.
"Oh, god," she breathed out. "You’re right. Should we call for help?"
Glancing at her purse in the backseat, Ivy hesitated. In this risky situation, retrieving her phone by unbuckling was dangerous.
"Calling for help won’t do," he said calmly as if figuring out what she was about to do. "Just hold tight, Miss Wei. Remember this once this is over. Apply everything you learned when you were pursuing me. They’ll help you get out of this kind of situation."
Ivy furrowed her brows, eyes on him again. Dane, on the other hand, took a deep breath, putting his undivided attention on how to get out of this situation without risking the life of the only person he ever genuinely liked without reason.
While Dane assessed the situation outside through the unaffected area of the window, he noticed another car veering off the road. Deep lines appeared between his brows, recognizing it was an escort car from Dominic’s convoy.
’These people...’ he realized, gripping the steering wheel tighter. ’... didn’t specifically come for her, did they?’

Meanwhile...
"Do you need me to take the wheel?" Dominic inquired, snapping his eyes at the driver’s seat. "You can’t deal with them while driving."
Ivy and Dane weren’t the only ones being attacked. Dominic and Bear were being attacked as well. Some of their escorts were forced to go off the road, isolating Dominic’s car with multiple SUVs.
"It’s fine." From the driver’s seat, Bear remained calm as he kept his eyes ahead. Cracks marred the windshield from the earlier assault. "Are you alright?" he returned the question.
"As you can tell, I’m perfectly fine," Dominic replied, secured in the backseat. "I’m just worried about Dane and Ivy." He took a deep breath and sighed. "More like I’m worried about Ivy."
"She’ll be fine," Bear reassured. "I’ve spent many hours with Mr. Zhang, and from what I can tell, he knows how to handle such situations."
Dominic turned his gaze to the driver’s seat again. "You mean?"
"His stance, gait, and grip. There were signs contradicting the persona he presented. If only you paid closer attention," Bear explained, keeping it short and simple. "That is why your wife couldn’t trust him completely in the beginning. His gestures don’t match the personality he introduced to her. That is why no one blames her when she brought up the idea."
"It wouldn’t be as suspicious if Dane introduced himself as a capable assistant who could protect his master at times of crisis," he added in the same baritone. "But he chose a completely different approach. Hence, he’s suspicious in her eyes. We learn these things as assassins who regularly go undercover to approach a target. The only reason we said nothing is because he’s with you way before we did."
Dominic drew another deep breath and rocked his head. "I see," he replied shortly. "Then I won’t need to worry about Ivy for now."
"You shouldn’t be complacent, Mr. Zhu," Bear quickly responded. "If Dane showed his true colors to her, I’m sure he wouldn’t let go of the only witness. He wouldn’t just let go of someone who knew who he truly was."
This time, Dominic looked at Bear with furrowed brows. However, he didn’t say anything because he already knew that at the back of his head. Trusting that Bear would keep the situation in control, Dominic slipped his hand inside his pocket to make a phone call.
He listened to the ring a couple of times before it was picked up.
"We’re under attack," he confessed the moment the line connected. "We’re fine. Bear is with me. The rest of the team was either pushed out of the road or maybe dead."
Dominic glanced at the rear mirror, only to see Bear staring at him through it. "It’s alright. Bear is fine — Mr. Cruel, are we going to be alright?"
"Yes." Without a second hesitation, Bear reassured. "Tell her, I’ll bring you back in one piece."
"You heard him." Dominic looked away to focus on the call. "Don’t worry. You don’t have to come here. Though I’m worried about something. Ivy is with Dane. I’ll tell you the details later."
He listened to his wife from the other end of the line, brows furrowed. "Tiger? I see. Then, call me once you’re free. Yes. You too, take care."
With that being said, Dominic ended the call. He slipped his phone into his pocket again and then reached for a button under his seat. The moment he did, the seat next to him opened up, revealing a few weapons.
"I’ll distract them," he remarked nonchalantly, assembling a rifle and loading it. "Keep driving."
Dominic didn’t even cast Bear a look as he immediately wound the window an inch down. He slipped the muzzle in the inch gap, opening fire fearlessly. Meanwhile, Bear watched Dominic through the rearview mirror before he smirked.
"You’ve really grown, Dom," he commented with a light chuckle, focusing on his driving task.
Dominic smirked, keeping his attention outside. "A man should step up their game if their wife is someone like Hera."
"Haha. That’s right." Bear nodded in satisfaction. "I’ll move the car closer. Aim for their tires."
"Got it."
With that being said, Bear and Dominic worked together to save themselves in this situation. And they did, without a problem.
