Chapter 833: The anomaly of the situation
Ivy let out a piercing scream as a barrage of shots assaulted her windshield. Fractures spider-webbed across the glass, an attempt to blind her, but she had instinctively shut her eyes before the onslaught began. Meanwhile, Dane, his instincts kicking in, lunged for the steering wheel.
"Tch!" he clicked his tongue, turning his head to the window in the driver’s seat. "Miss Wei!"
"Ahh!!!" Ivy kept screaming, muffling Dane’s shouts and calls.
Dane clenched his teeth, turning the steering wheel to the left until Ivy’s body was leaning against the door. His pupils were dilated, seeing the motorcycle on the left lane decelerate to avoid crashing against them.
"Miss Wei!" he shouted once more, maneuvering the vehicle in such an awkward position. "Ivy Wei!"
Ivy flinched, snapping her eyes open. Only then did she realize Dane was holding the wheel, not panicking just like her.
"Let’s switch," he said, his eyes darting in all directions. "Come on."
Her lips quivered, unable to process his words for a moment.
"Miss Wei!" this time, Dane looked at her with eyes glinting sharply. "Can you understand me? If you don’t want to die, then crawl in the passenger seat and switch with me."
Ivy instinctively nodded as she gulped. She took a deep breath, unbuckling her seatbelt. Dane still held the steering wheel while seated in the front passenger seat. Hence, she moved the driver’s seat back, creating more space for the two of them.
Dane kept his hand on the steering wheel, letting her crawl across him. He, on the other hand, moved carefully to the front passenger seat. After what seemed to be forever, both of them successfully switched positions without any problem.
"Buckle up," he said the moment he settled in the driver’s seat, fastening his seatbelt with one hand. "And please, stop screaming."
Ivy pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded, listening to his instructions without making a fuss. When she buckled up, she turned her head to him again.
"What are you planning?" she asked, her voice laced with fear. "Mr. Zhang, who are these people?"
Dane’s face darkened, casting her a quick look. "Why are you asking me such an obvious question after playing with fire?"
Her breath hitched until her neck turned taut. She looked away, hugging herself nervously. Her eyes lingered on the cracks on the side of her window, but through them, she could see the motorcycle catching up to them again.
"If those who wanted him couldn’t get him, then they’d target those who could," he added under his breath, flexing his fingers on the steering wheel. "You’re the closest and most vulnerable person in his life. Therefore, these things would continue happening."
Ivy gulped, hearing it echo in her ear. She held the seatbelt tightly, taking deep breaths as her heart raced. She had always told herself she might be in danger; Tiger even mentioned that to her. Even so, because of her stubbornness, she didn’t want to care.
Strange, she thought. At this point, she should’ve regretted being so stubborn. However, right after realizing the situation, it calmed her down.
"So..." she spoke with a shaking voice. "... this is what he was going through, huh?"
Dane furrowed his brows and looked at her in disbelief. Much to his dismay, although Ivy’s fears were evident in her eyes, it was mixed with understanding instead of regret.
"Are you crazy?" he blurted out in dismay. "How can you say that in this situation?"
"Mr. Zhang, I already told you my take on this," she explained, looking back at him squarely. "At the back of my head, I’ve always known I might die if I stay with him. I’m just glad I’m not dying without a heads-up. Tiger told me some assassins kill their targets before their targets even realize it."
She forced a smile on her face, teary-eyed. "At least I’m not going down the same path. I still have time to think about my regrets in life."
For a moment, Dane forgot everything around them and the deadly situation they were in. All he could do was stare at her, speechless at the nonsense she had spewed. At this moment, people would normally question every decision they made in their lives. But Ivy was different.
"You... Ivy Wei..." Dane peeled his gaze from her, grinding his teeth in irritation. "... make me really angry."
Ivy’s face trembled as she smiled. "I know it’s stupid —"
"I stopped myself..." he continued through his gritted teeth, stopping her mid-sentence. "I held back — the only thing I did with good intentions all my life — just so you’ll be safe. Yet, you’re foolishly spewing a bunch of nonsense without regard for your life."
Her brows rose as lines appeared on her forehead. She stared at his side profile, baffled.
"Mr. Zhang..." she whispered. "What are you... I don’t follow."
Dane didn’t elaborate, keeping his attention on the windshield. His expression was sharp with a tinge of annoyance mixed along with it. He was more annoyed at her reaction instead of the situation they were in as if this situation was not a problem.
"Do you have a gun?" he asked after a moment, changing the subject completely.
"Mister Zhang."
"If you know you might be in danger one of these days, you should’ve kept a gun with you at all times," he remarked, giving her a side-eye. "He didn’t give you?"
Ivy opened and closed her mouth, then shook her head. She looked away from him, opening the compartment. Her face stiffened as her mouth parted.
"I..." her voice shook, closing her eyes momentarily. She took a deep breath and then breathed out, "It’s in the other car."
"You only keep one gun?" Dane scoffed, giving her a judgmental look. "Miss Wei, you’re really rendering me speechless."
"How would I know?" she argued. "I’m new to this, and also, even if we have a gun, what will you do?! We’re both..." Ivy trailed off as she furrowed her brows, assessing Dane once more.
"Dane Zhang," she called under her breath, only noticing the anomaly in this situation. "How are you so calm?"
